San Diego Police Stop Air Force Veteran From Hanging American Flag

Think Progress

Video has emerged of an Air Force veteran associated with Occupy San Diego, Joseph Aldous, trying to plant an American flag in a public plaza in San Diego.

Police repeatedly harangued him about his action, as at least half a dozen police officers tried to prevent Aldous from simply putting his flag down.

The description of the YouTube video says that Aldous then went on to place the flag on private property and told the police he’d take it down if the owner demanded it.

Right-Wing Lip Readers Take Michelle Obama Derangement Syndrome To A Whole New Level

I take a short break from blogging and I come back to see the crazies are at it again.  Sheesh!

Media Matters

UPDATE: Kristina Schake, communications director for First Lady Michelle Obama, made the following statement about these attacks:

The words, meaning and context in these claims are all wildly off the mark.  The First Lady was commenting to the President on how moving and powerful it always is to watch all that America’s firefighters and police officers do to honor the flag.  It was an emotional moment on a powerful day and she was awed by the ceremony and all that the flag symbolizes.

Before today, when the right-wing media made up quotations to attack progressives, they at least had some audio to misinterpret.   But now, they are reduced to lip-reading.

The Washington Times‘ senior editorial writer for foreign affairs James Robbins and right-wingbloggers are claiming that Michelle Obama likely disparaged the American flag during a ceremony commemorating the 9/11 attacks.

They have posted video of Michelle Obama whispering something inaudible to her husband during the ceremony and are speculating that she said “all this just for a flag,” “all that for a flag,” or “all of this for a damn flag.” (They disagree on exactly what she said.)

Blogger Jim Hoft, still in the running for the Dumbest Man on the Internetdidn’t even have the confidence to type the fake Michelle Obama quotation himself. He instead provided a link to an American Thinker post making the accusation for him.

The video the bloggers have posted has no audio of Michelle Obama at the relevant point, and their lip-reading is hindered by the fact that Michelle Obama’s lips disappear behind a partition at one point.

But they still believe Michelle Obama must have said something extremely controversial. We leave you with the ramblings of Debbie Schlussel, who seems to believe it doesn’t matter what Michelle Obama said, because we all know what “she’s thinkin’ “:

I can’t really tell for sure, but a number of people are abuzz about this video of Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Hussein Obama Idi Amin Dada. The consensus seems to be that the First Ms. Thang is saying to hubby Barack, “All of this for a damn flag.” (She said this about the American flag — you know the one brave men died for.) Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what she said because we know she hates America and previously said she wasn’t proud of our country until Obama had a chance to become Prez. Looks like that’s what she said, but I can’t tell for sure. I would need a deaf person or other expert lip reader to confirm. Watch and see if you agree (like I said, even if she didn’t say exactly that, we know she’s thinkin’ it).

MSNBC anchor: Palin’s bus tour ‘a breach of a federal law’

In my opinion, Sarah Palin is a breach of federal law!

Raw Story

MSNBC anchor Martin Bashir says Sarah Palin’s creative display of the American flag on the bus for her national tour could amount to a “breach of a federal law.”

“In fact, the whole thing could be in breach of a federal law because the United States Flag Code establishes important rules for the use and display of the stars and stripes, the flag of the United States,” Bashir said Tuesday on his program. “Under standards of respect and etiquette, it’s made clear that the flag of the United States should never be used for any advertising purpose whatsoever. Yet that’s precisely what Sarah Palin is doing.”

The U.S. flag code emphasizes that it “does not impose penalties” for misuse of the flag, but simply serves as a “guide for all handling and display of the Stars and Stripes.”

Bashir scolded Palin for co-opting the American flag in a manner that, he said, has “nothing to do with the presidency and everything to do with filling her pockets.”

Gov. Brewer Signs Law Giving Tea Party Flag Same Status As American Flag

Just when I thought AZ Gov. Jan Brewer had harnassed some common sense into her cerebrel cortex, she does this…

Think Progress

While Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) is rightly being praised for vetoing a so-called “birther bill” yesterday, she also quietly signed into law legislation that gives the Tea Party-associated Gadsen Flag the same protection as the American flag when it comes to home owners associations (HOA), the Arizona Daily Star reports:

Brewer also signed separate legislation Monday to expand the list of flags that HOA residents could fly despite regulations to the contrary.

Current law overrides any rules when it comes to the U.S. flag, the flags of any branch of the military, the state flag, the POW-MIA flag and the flag of any Indian nation. The new law will add the Gadsden flag to that protected list, that yellow flag with the drawing of a coiled rattlesnake and the phrase “Don’t Tread on Me.”

While the yellow banner dates back to the American Revolution, the flag and its “don’t tread on me” slogan have been appropriated by the modern day tea party movement and are now closely associated with the right-wing activists (it’s even on the tea party race car). The legislation came into being in the wake of a national controversy last summer sparked by an Arizona man who refused to comply with his homeowners association’s request that he remove a Gadsen flag from his house.

Unsettled nation marks 9/11 with rituals of sorrow

NEW YORK (AP) – Rites of remembrance and loss marked the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, familiar in their sorrow but observed for the first time Saturday in a nation torn over the prospect of a mosque near ground zero and the role of Islam in society.

Under a flawless blue sky that called to mind the day itself, there were tears and song, chants, and the waving of hundreds of American flags. Loved ones recited the names of the victims, as they have each year since the attacks. They looked up to add personal messages to the lost and down to place flowers in a reflecting pool in their honor.

For a few hours Saturday morning, the political and cultural furor over whether a proposed Islamic center and mosque belongs two blocks from the World Trade Center site mostly gave way to the somber anniversary ceremony and pleas from elected officials for religious tolerance.

But this Sept. 11 was unmistakably different from the eight that came before it, and not only because a new World Trade Center is finally ready to rise. As they finished reading names, two relatives of 9/11 victims issued pleas – one to God and one to New York – that the site remain “sacred.”  Continue reading…
