Megyn Kelly Destroys Erickson And Dobbs: ‘Who Died And Made You Scientist-In-Chief?!’

Megyn Kelly took two of her Fox colleagues to the woodshed this afternoon.

In response to Erick Erickson and Lou Dobbs making controversial comments this week about a Pew study finding that 40% of American households have a mother as breadwinner, Kelly brought the two of them onto her show and proceeded to tear into them.

To recap: during a Wednesday evening segment of FBN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight, Erickson, Dobbs, and other Fox male contributors lamented the Pew study’s “troubling” findings, claiming it signaled a disintegration of the American family. Erickson went the farthest with his analysis, claiming it is “anti-science” to not believe that men are supposed to play the dominant role in the household. The group collectively bemoaned the increase of female breadwinners.

In response, this afternoon, Kelly asked: “What makes you dominant and me submissive and who died and made you scientist-in-chief?”

Rachel Maddow – ‘Something weird is going on’ in FBI shooting of Ibragim Todashev

Maddow 053113

(Revised from earlier post)

The Raw Story

On Thursday night’s edition of “The Rachel Maddow Show,” host Rachel Maddow discussed the swirl of questions around the shooting of Ibragim Todashev, an associate of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the two men charged with the bombing of the Boston Marathon.

FBI officials have given conflicting accounts of the questioning and killing of Todashev, who knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev through Mixed Martial Arts fighting. Todashev, who, like the Tsarnaevs, was Chechen, lived in Boston for a time before moving to Florida. Agents from the FBI traveled to Florida to question Todashev repeatedly about the bombing.

“Last week while being questioned again in Florida,” said Maddow, “something went very, very wrong and he ended up dead.”

Law enforcement officials were interviewing Todashev in his apartment in Orlando on Wednesday, May 22, when something occurred that resulted in the young man being shot multiple times.

On Thursday, Todashev’s family held a press conference in Moscow, where they showed autopsie photos of their slain son. Ibragim Todashev was shot six times in the torso and once in the back of the head.

“We have not been able to authenticate these photos,” said Maddow. “No one has.”

But, she said, if they are genuine, “something weird is going on.”

“How does that comport with the FBI’s story that he was killed during questioning by armed agents who were only acting in self defense?” she asked. “Shot seven times, including in the back of the head?”

Todashev was questioned because of a possible connection to a bizarre 2011 murder in Waltham, Massachusetts in which three men were found with their throats cut, covered in marijuana, with $5,000 in cash untouched nearby. Law enforcement officials theorize now that Tamerlan Tsarnaev may have murdered the men with the help of some other person or persons.

“That cold case got hot again” after the marathon bombing, Maddow said. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was close friends with one of the victims, but, after his murder, Tsarnaev declined to attend his friend’s funeral.

After Todashev was shot during questioning, Maddow said, law enforcement officials “leaked an elaborate story” that purported to justify the killing. The officials also claimed that Todashev had implicated himself in the Waltham murders prior to being shot. They said that just before the man was about to sign a confession, he snapped, and “lunged at the interrogator with a blade.”

“That initial story has fallen apart,” Maddow said. Within 12 hours of the shooting, two of the three law enforcement officials who were talking to the media about the case changed their story, saying they were no longer sure whether Todashev had a knife.

Now, multiple sources have come forward to papers like the Washington Post to say that, in fact, Todashev was unarmed. NBC News reported on Thursday that Todashev may have been brandishing some kind of “metal rod.”

“So they shot him seven times?” Maddow asked, “Including in the back of the head?” She added that no one actually knows right now if that was the actual number of gunshot wounds on Todashev’s body since officials will neither confirm nor deny that the post-autopsy photos are accurate.

“What we’re left with here is a baffling mess and a story that does not make sense,” she said.

Tea Party Fail

Tea party speaker presents proof Grover Norquist is a secret Muslim: ‘He has a beard’

Texas Eagle Forum President Cathie Adams

What is this perpetual right-wing nonsense of denigrating Muslims at  every turn?  More specifically, what the heck does Grover Norquist having a beard” have to do with being a Muslim?

If that’s the only criteria in which Ms. Adams bases her assertion, then Abraham Lincoln was a Muslim!

Hey, it’s wacky Friday TFC friends.

The Raw Story

A speaker at a tea party event in Texas recently suggested that anti-tax lobbyist Grover Norquist was a secret Muslim because “he has a beard.”

In a video posted by the Far North Dallas Tea Party on Thursday, Texas Eagle Forum President and former Chairman of the Texas Republican Party Cathie Adams presented evidence that Norquist was part of a “stealth jihad” in the United States.

Adams said that Norquist, who is married to a Muslim woman, was “trouble with a capital ‘T’” because “he’s showing signs of converting to Islam himself.”

“As you see, he has a beard,” she pointed out. “He’s married a Muslim woman. But he denies that he has converted himself. He denies that.”

“He and Karl Rove are very good friends. I don’t like Karl Rove, and I certainly don’t like Grover Norquist.”

Adams went on to suggest that CIA Director John Brennan could also be a secret Muslim.

“Where is the outcry?” she asked. “Thank God that Ted Cruz is now in the United States Senate!”

Norquist, along with conservative activist Suhail Khan, are often labeled as stealth Muslimsby Islamaphobic conservative activists led by Pamela Geller, Frank Gaffney and Robert Spencer, most recently at at 2013 CPAC panel.

President Barack Obama · Ricin-filled Letters

FBI intercepts suspicious letter to Obama that might contain ricin

The Washington Post

A spokesperson in the FBI’s Washington Field Office said that a “suspicious letter” sent to Obama was intercepted at a White House mail facility on Thursday morning. FBI is investigating the letter and they do not yet know whether the letter tested positive or negative for ricin.

The White House referred questions on the matter to the Secret Service, which has yet to comment.

The news comes six weeks after ricin-laced letters were sent to Obama and two other Washington political figures, including Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), and a day after a ricin-laced letter was sent to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I).

On Wednesday, a ricin-laced letter was also sent to Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a gun control organization Bloomberg founded.

After similar letters were sent to Obama and Wicker last month, the police arrested a man who was later released. Police made another arrest soon after, apprehending James Everett Dutschke of Mississippi.

Police in Washington state last week also arrested a man in connection with a death threat to a judge and two ricin-laced letters sent earlier this month.

NYC PBS President Freaks Out Over Documentary Critical of Koch Brothers, Offers David Koch Unprecedented Rebuttal

Oh well…it seems the truth hurts in this instance.

Thom Hartmann recently wrote an extremely widely read article on how the Public Broadcasting Service has evolved into a sometimes self-censored television network, in large part because major donors represent the 1% who would be the subject of discussion when it comes to economic concentration in the hands of a few.

Hartmann entitled his commentary, “The Corporate Dictatorship of PBS and NPR.” The primary example Hartmann offers of how critical analysis necessary for formulating public policy is de facto censored concerns how PBS dropped the funding of a documentary called “Citizen Koch.”

As Hartmann details,

Public broadcasting institutions now rely more and more on corporate and billionaire cash to operate, which is probably why PBS and NPR now filter what they play on their airwaves, so that they don’t anger their wealthy backers.

This is where the documentary “Citizen Koch” comes in.

“Citizen Koch” is a documentary about money and politics, focusing heavily on the uprising that took place in Wisconsin in 2011 and 2012.

It talks about how the Citizens United decision paved the way for secretive political spending by major players, including the Koch Brothers.

As Brendan Fischer over at the Center for Media and Democracy’s PRWatch points out, the documentary was originally supposed to air on PBS stations nationwide, but its funding was abruptly cut off when, it appears, David Koch was offended.

But why would PBS care if David Koch didn’t like one of their documentaries?

Because, according to Jane Mayer of the New Yorker, David Koch has donated upwards of $23 million to public television. And when you donate $23 million dollars to public television, you get more than just a tote bag or a coffee mug – you get to dictate the on-air programming.

This brings us to the PBS WNET affiliate in NYC, where David Koch recently sat on the board.  He was also rumored to be readying a “seven-figure” gift to the Big Apple Public Broadcasting station.

Enter Alex Gibney, who won a 2008 Academy Award for “Taxi To the Dark Side” – his meticulous and compelling exposure of the death by torture of an innocent Afghan taxi driver due to sanctioned torture in Afghanistan.  Gibney filmed a documentary for WNET, “Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream” that focused on one of the wealthiest residential buildings in New York City: 740 Park Avenue.

According to Jane Mayer, who had written about the Kochs before in a celebrated New Yorker article in 2010, it would be difficult to do a film about 740 Park Avenue without examining the Koch empire that created their wealth, as well as their political activities. What did WNET President Neal Shapiro do when he realized that “Park Avenue” might offend David Koch? Why, he called him and offered him a rebuttal, a roundtable discussion, a written response: anything that would appease a 1% donor who was on the board of the station (Koch has since quit) and was about to give a bundle to WNET.

Michele Bachmann

Translating Michele Bachmann’s Resignation Speech

The Raw Story

As earlier reported, Michele Bachmann abruptly announced yesterday that she won’t be running for re-election for a seat that used to be assuredly hers by virtue of her party, but could be under threat from a Democratic challenger as her national profile-seeking has revealed to the country exactly how much of an embarrassment she is. Here is the video where she announced this:

Like you, I got about 30 seconds in before her tendency to talk to the public like it’s made up of very slow-witted preschoolers got to me and I had to shut it off. However, the hard-working folks at Minnesota Public Radio graciously published a transcript, and so I thought I’d use that to quote juicy bits and help translate them from Wingnutese (which I sadly speak fluently) to English.

My good friends, after a great deal of thought and deliberation, I have decided next year I will not seek a fifth Congressional term to represent the wonderful people of the Sixth District of Minnesota. After serious consideration, I am confident that this is the right decision.

After reading my poll numbers and having to endure multiple interviews with the FBI, I’ve decided that this job actually requires work, so I’m quitting.

However, the law limits anyone from serving as President of the United States for more than eight years. And in my opionion, well, eight years is also long enough for an individual to serve as a representative for a specific congressional district.

To make myself feel better about leaving in disgrace, I’m going to pretend Congress is a club I don’t want to be in anyway, starting by disparaging those who managed to hang in longer than I did.

Be assured, my decision was not in any way influenced by any concerns about my being re-elected to Congress. I’ve always in the past defeated candidates that were capable, qualified and well-funded. And I have every confidence that if I ran, I would again defeat the individual that I defeated last year, who recently announced that he is once again running.

And rest assured, this decision was not impacted in any way by the recent inquiries into the activities of my former presidential campaign, or my former presidential staff. It was clearly understood that compliance with all rules and regulations was an absolute necessity for my presdiential campaign, and I have no reason to believe that that was not the case.

I think you’re dumb enough to believe that someone who ran for President last year suddenly had a change of heart about being a professional politician. I’m hoping that my reputation for being “crazy” will convince you that I’m indifferent to the relentless phone calls I’m getting from the Republican Party leaders begging me to step down so as not to lose an otherwise secure seat to a Democrat.

And even when it means resisting the policy positions of many in my own political party, I’ve always strived to be first and foremost a public servant and do what is best for the people and never acquiesce to being a political servant.

Even when people were laughing at me, I never budged an inch from spouting John Bircher-levels of right wing nonsense.

Feel confident, over the next 18 months, I will continue to work 100-hour weeks

Broken down: 10 hours doing work, 10 hours going on TV to be a freak show, and 80 hours fussing over paranoid fantasies of the Muslims/gays/feminists/college professors lurking in the bushes, waiting for me to let down my guard so they can drink my blood.

And I will continue to work vehemently and robustly to fight back against what most in the other party want to do, to transform our country into becoming, which would be a nation that our founders would hardly even recognize today.

They wouldn’t recognize this mutant America, where women can vote and slavery is banned, that differs so from the nation they built.

I proudly have, and I promise you I will continue, to fight to protect innocent human life, traditional marriage, family values, religious liberty and academic excellence

I’ll make a handful of speeches that continue to affirm people’s suspicion that I think married couples should have sex through a hole in a sheet.

I’ve called out the Muslim jihad terrorists for who they are, and for the evil that they perpetrate upon our people.

No one would have noticed that Boston bombing if I hadn’t said something.

I’ve identified at the outset of the so-called Arab Spring, this adminsitration’s foriegn policy blunders and how those blunders have contributed into turning the Middle East into a devastating, evil, jihadist earthquake.

You don’t really need to understand foreign policy so long as you accept that whatever Obama does must be wrong.

I’ve also demanded, consistently, a balanced budget and fiscal responsibility, that this be a preeminent government requirement, so as to avoid the dangers of a future, a financial calamity for our children and the ultimate risk of the destruction of our entire economic system.

I hope that my uber-white district will continue to believe it’s better to burn this country to the ground than share it fairly with people who aren’t exactly like them, and won’t hold my behavior against whatever crazed but untested wingnut they run in my stead.

My core of conviction on these principal issues and more will continue, in a steadfast manner, during the remainder of my term and beyond.

I promise at least a few more floor speeches that will make you marvel at their stupidity.

Unfortunately, today I am even more concerned about our country’s future than I have ever been in the past. On so many issues, we’re clearly on the wrong track.

Please vote for whoever the Republicans run, or else you might end up with a gay, Latino boss one day.

But looking forward, after the completion of my term, my future is full, it is limitless, and my passions for America will remain. And I want you to be assured that there is no future option or opportunity, be it directly in the political arena or otherwise, that I won’t be giving serious consideration if it can help save and protect our great nation for future generations.

Dear Fox News: If you give me a multi-million dollar contract, I won’t squander it like Sarah Palin did.

I fully anticipate the mainstream liberal media to put a detrimental spin on my decision not to seek a fifth term. Since I was first elected to Congress many years ago, they always seem to attempt to find a dishonest way to disparage me.

Usually by quoting me directly, without comment.

To my many good friends and supporters, I will continue fight for public policy that is first and foremost in the best interest of the citizens of the United States at large.

Seriously, Roger Ailes: I released this statement as a video as a reminder of how photogenic I am. I’ll settle for $2 million a year.

James Comey

James Comey As Next FBI Director? Obama To Pick Former George W. Bush Official: Sources

If the name James Comey sounds vaguely familiar it’s because he’s remembered for his riveting testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee inquiring about spying  practices of the George W. Bush administration.

James B. Comey, Jr. (born December 14, 1960) was United States Deputy Attorney General, serving in President George W. Bush‘s administration. As Deputy Attorney General, Comey was the second-highest ranking official in the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and ran the day-to-day operations of the Department, serving in that office from December 2003 through August 2005. He was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York prior to becoming Deputy Attorney General.

In December 2003, as Deputy Attorney General, Comey appointed the U.S. Attorney in Chicago, close friend and former colleague Patrick Fitzgerald, as Special Counsel to head the CIA leak grand jury investigation after Attorney General John Ashcroft recused himself. In August 2005, Comey left the DOJ and he became General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Lockheed Martin. In 2010, he became General Counsel at Bridgewater Associates. In early 2013, he left Bridgewater to become Senior Research Scholar and Hertog Fellow on National Security Law at Columbia Law School. He also joined the London-based board of directors of HSBC Holdings. ~ Wiki

The Huffington Post

Former Justice Department official James Comey is expected to be nominated as President Barack Obama’s next FBI Director, NPR and the New York Times reported Wednesday.

NPR cited two sources saying that Comey, who served as Deputy Attorney General under former President George W. Bush, is in line to be Obama’s choice. The Times added one source, noting that Comey will be chosen over top White House top counterterrorism adviser Lisa Monaco.

Back in March 2011, Comey was in line for the same FBI post. The Associated Press detailed how he threatened to resign from the Justice Department over Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program. That stance placed him as a revered figure among Democrats who were against the practice, the wire service reported.

Politico adds that Comey, 52, left the Justice Department in 2005, and has since worked as a general counsel for defensive contracting firm Lockheed Martin and investment firm Bridgewater Associated. Their report also notes that Federal Election Commission records have him donating to Obama’s two Republican election opponents: John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012.

New Yorkers get second chance to see monumental Manhattanhenge

I love New York City…

NBC News – Cosmic Blog

The sun shines down 42nd Street below the landmark Chrysler Building at sunset on July 12, 2009, during Manhattanhenge.

The first night of this year’s Manhattanhenge season was a washout, due to cloudy weather, but there’s another chance to see the sunset turn the streets of New York aglow tonight.

Manhattanhenge refers to the perfectly placed alignment of the setting sun amid the canyons of midtown Manhattan’s east-west streets. The phenomenon, sometimes known as the Manhattan solstice, occurs every year around Memorial Day and major-league baseball’s All-Star break.

The Hayden Planetarium’s director, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, says future archaeologists might well conclude that these spots on the calendar marked important rites of summer for New Yorkers. (And they wouldn’t be far wrong.)

Tyson’s the one who came up with the term “Manhattanhenge.” Think of it as a modern-day, unintentional version of Stonehenge, with New York skyscrapers standing in for the stones of the 5,000-year-old monument in England.

Stonehenge was constructed to have its stones line up with the rays of the sun on important astronomical dates such as the summer solstice. Manhattan’s street grid, however, doesn’t line up with the solstice or the equinox. The relevant streets, which reflect the Commissioner’s Plan of 1811, are offset 29 degrees from east and west. That would spoil the sunset view on an equinox or a solstice — but on the proper dates, the sun reaches the cleft between skyscrapers just in time to set the streets aglow.

This year’s first opportunity for seeing Manhattanhenge’s glory came Tuesday night at 8:17 p.m. ET. Under ideal conditions, a pretty half-setting sun could have been seen centered in the gap between the buildings. Unfortunately, conditions were not ideal. In disappointed Twitter tweets, the sight quickly came to be termed “Cloudhenge.”

In disappointed Twitter tweets, the sight quickly came to be termed “Cloudhenge.”

“A cloudy and stormy night, so no sun,”reported Andrew Dallos, a producer for “The Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC who camped out on 42nd Street.

Tonight, on Wednesday night, New Yorkers could get a chance to see the sun’s full disk just touching the horizon in the gap at 8:16 p.m. ET. It all depends on the weather: The current forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of thunderstorms — which at least sounds more promising than last night’s weather.

Even if tonight’s opportunity is clouded out, there’ll be a Manhattanhenge replay after the summer solstice, with a full-sun viewing at 8:24 p.m. on July 11 and a half-sun opportunity at 8:25 p.m. July 12.

To enhance your Manhattanhenge viewing experience, Tyson suggests positioning yourself as far east as possible, while still making sure you can see New Jersey when you look west across the avenues. “Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, 57th and several streets adjacent to them,” he writes in his viewing guide. “The Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building render 34th Street and 42nd Street especially striking vistas.”
