Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Questions Whether Race is a factor in the debt ceiling talks…does she have a point?

Discussing race in this country is such a divisive topic that most people would rather deny its existence or at least sweep it under the rug and discuss it at a later date.  In my years online, I have learned to stay away from the topic in general discussion forums.  People will attack you as being a “militant”, “prejudice”, “racist” and “anti-white” or one is “playing the race card”.  Mostly because they don’t want to talk about it.

I suspect Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee will get the same response…(See related articles, below.)

We have never seen the debt ceiling issue play out like this before. We have never seen or heard talk of the United States of America defaulting on its loans, but we also have never had a black president before. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee raised this issue on the floor of Congress. I have heard several people that I know ask this same question this week. So tell me what you think is  race a factor?

Herman Cain: Americans Have The Right To Ban Mosques

I can’t wait till this bigoted creep implodes…and he will…

Think Progress

To rise above the myriad of GOP presidential candidates, pizza mogul Herman Cain is standing firmly on his anti-Muslim platform. Taking advantage of the Islamophobic atmosphere, Cain consistently vilifies American Muslimsand Islam, even declaring that he would not consider hiring a Muslim to serve in his cabinet. Last week, Cain waded into mosque controversy in Murfreesboro, TN, declaring the Muslim community’s plan to build an Islamic center “an infringement and an abuse of our freedom of religion” as it “is not an innocent mosque.” To Cain, the center is a definitive example of what he sees is the infiltration of Sharia Law.

On Fox News Sunday today, host Chris Wallace pursued Cain’s reasoning behind his rabid opposition to the Tennessee center. Cain explained that while the Constitution guarantees a separation of church and state, the Islamic faith “combines church and state. They’re using the church part of our First Amendment to infuse their morals in that community.” Noting his constant invocation of the Constitution which guarantees the freedom of religion, Wallace asked Cain whether any American community has a right to ban a mosque. Cain replied, “Yes, they have the right to do that”:

WALLACE: But couldn’t any community then say they don’t want a mosque in our community?

CAIN: They could say that. Chris, lets go back to the fundamental issue that the people are basically saying they’re objecting to. They’re objecting to the fact Islam is both a religion and a set of laws, Sharia law. That’s the difference between any one of our other traditional religions where it’s just about religious purposes. The people in the community know best, and I happen to side with the people in Murfreesboro.

WALLACE: You’re saying any community, if they want to ban a mosque?

CAIN: Yes. They have a right to do that. That’s not discriminating based upon religion.

Watch it:

The element in the Murfreesboro community that Cain is siding with has made their feelings about Islam abundantly clear. Last year, community members scrawled “not welcome” on the signs at the center site and torched the construction equipment. Murfreesboro’s state Sen. Bill Ketron (R) sponsored a bill that would make it a felony to practice Sharia law, “which includes lessons found in the Quran, the holy book of Islam, and which can inform how Muslims live their everyday lives, including prayer rituals.”

The fact that Cain is championing right-wing bigotry and rejecting a basic tenet of the Constitution to do so betrays the very patriotism he so often invokes.

Rebekah Brooks Arrested In Connection With Phone Hacking Scandal

This isn’t looking good for the Murdoch empire…

Huffington Post

Rebekah Brooks has been arrested, the Metropolitan Police confirmed on Sunday.

The former News International chief executive went to a London police station by appointment and was arrested on suspicion of corruption and phone hacking.

Brooks is the 10th person to be arrested in connection to the new investigation into allegations of phone hacking at the News of the World.

In a statement, police said: “The MPS has this afternoon, Sunday 17 July, arrested a female in connection with allegations of corruption and phone hacking.

“At approximately 12.00 hrs a 43-year-old woman was arrested by appointment at a London police station by officers from Operation Weeting together with officers from Operation Elveden and is currently in custody.

“She was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications, contrary to Section1(1) Criminal Law Act 1977 and on suspicion of corruption allegations contrary to Section 1 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906.

“The Operation Weeting team is conducting the new investigation into phone hacking.

“Operation Elveden is the investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police. This investigation is being supervised by the IPCC.

“It would be inappropriate to discuss any further details regarding these cases at this time.”

Brooks is due to appear before Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee on Tuesday afternoon. The Chairman of that committee, John Whittingdale, says he doesn’t know at this stage how the arrest of Mrs. Brooks will affect her planned evidence.

Media lawyer Mark Stephens said police were trying to get a grip on the scandal. He told Sky News: “I think the police are trying to move pretty quickly… One of those areas of concern is the suggestion that officers at all levels may have been the subject of receiving money as Rebekah Brooks told parliament when she last appeared before them.”

Rebekah Brooks has released a statement saying she is assisting police with her inquiries, and this was a pre-arranged appointment.
