Conservative Tries To Donate To Obama As Bin Laden, Commits Crime

WND is just one of many right-wing online publications that seem to have spent a huge amount of time trying to shine the most negative and despicable light on President Obama through lies, innuendos and blatant slander….

Addicting Info

WND, one of my personal favorite right-wing propaganda machine sites, has apparently and unwittingly committed a crime while erroneously reporting that Obama is accepting money from foreign nationals.

WND made the claim that, “Using a Pakistani Internet Protocol and proxy server, a disposable credit card and a fake address, “Osama bin Laden” has successfully donated twice to Barack Obama’s presidential re-election campaign.”

First of all, that’s not true. As the Obama campaign has explained (and has, unsurprisingly, been ignored),

“If a billing address is verified via AVS, then the credit card contribution is processed without delay. Some transactions caught by AVS may initially appear to a donor to have been accepted even though this is not the case. Obama for America employs a manual process to review any transaction flagged by AVS, also taking into account other fraud risk factors, and using fraud detection services provided by our credit card processor.

“As an example, the contribution discussed here may have initially appeared to have gone through when the donor completed the transaction at 10:18 a.m. but it was rejected at 4:51 p.m. under our standard fraud detection procedures.

“So any claims that Obama for America has disabled AVS are inaccurate; any question about this would have been answered-if the question had been asked.”

Conveniently, this information is not noted in the WND article, but they don’t seem to care much about what is correct and what isn’t. They also state that, “The acceptance of foreign contributions is strictly illegal under U.S. campaign finance law,” which isn’t true, either. Foreign donations, provided they come from U.S. citizens, are perfectly legal. What isn’t legal are donations from foreign nationals. American citizens outside of the United States must prove citizenship for the donation to be accepted.

Another bit of easily verifiable information that they failed to properly investigate comes from the Daily Caller, a well known source for totally fair and balanced conservative propaganda news:

As the Daily Caller reported, a statement accompanied the GAI’s report from former U.S. Attorney Ken Sukhia noting that 68 percent of traffic to BarackObama.com comes from foreign users, all of whom are redirected to a fundraising page operated by the president’s re-election campaign.

First of all, the domain name that the Daily Caller reported on was not – repeat, not – BarackObama.com. It was, in fact, Obama.com, and those two domain names have different traffic results entirely. However, the 68% foreign traffic number is wrong for both, as easily seen and verified on Alexa (barackobama.com site stats found here and obama.com stats here).

Here are screenshots for the traffic percentages to each:

As you can see, foreign hits are actually only 17.6% of traffic on BarackObama.com — a far cry from 68%.

Here’s the picture for Obama.com:

For Obama.com, 29.3% are from foreign countries. Also, considering Obama’s good standing in the world, it is not surprising in the least that there are foreign visitors to his site.

On another note, somebody should probably let the good folks over at WND know that donations in another person’s name are not permitted before they take the following action: “WND is preparing an affidavit for the Federal Elections Commission and the FBI on the illegal donation accepted by the Obama campaign.”

Yeah, good luck with that. Aaron Klein, the writer that published this piece of easily disproved garbage, should probably get the “worst journalist ever” award for this one. However, the real goal was never accurate journalism anyway, but rather a piece of fiction that will be seized upon and repeated ad nauseam. As reported by Media Matters:

Right-wing media are ignoring anti-fraud protections the Obama campaign has in place to allege that the Obama campaign accepted donations from someone impersonating Osama bin Laden.

Matt Drudge is hyping an article by World Net Daily’s Aaron Klein who claimed that ”Using a Pakistani Internet Protocol and proxy server, a disposable credit card and a fake address, ‘Osama bin Laden’ has successfully donated twice to Barack Obama’s presidential re-election campaign.’ “

Have fun with that, conservatives. We’ll be looking forward to your breathless and credulous reporting on this non-story for the next week in between your hourly floggings of the made up Benghazi scandal.

Santorum Touts Endorsement Of Birther Joseph Farah

Unless Newt Gingrich exits the race, Santorum’s chances of winning the required delegates to clinch the GOP nomination for the Presidency is slim, at best.

However, given his performances thus far, and his anticipated performances in the south, Santorum still has some relevancy.

Hence this story…

Think Progress

Hoping to beat Mitt Romney in upcoming Southern primaries, Rick Santorum’s campaign sent out a press release today touting the endorsement of 200 “esteemed conservative leaders.” Among the supporters the Santorum campaign is “proud to announce” are many controversial figures, such as immigration hawk Tom Tancredo andproudly Islamophobic retired general William Boykin (who was nearly uninvited from West Point earlier this year), but one name particular stood out — Joseph Farah.

Farah is the founder and editor of World Net Daily, a website dedicated to advancing the myth the President Obama was not born in the United States. Farah is so dedicated to “eligibility issues,” as he calls them, that he’s even said Cuban-American Sen. March Rubio (R-FL), a darling of conservatives and potential vice presidential pick, is “not eligible” because he’s supposedly “not a natural-born citizen.”

Farah is also known for blaming earthquakes, hurricanes, and the Penn State sex scandal, among other things, on the growing acceptance of homosexuality.

Ironically, in the same Fox News interview in which Farah questioned Rubio, he suggested that Santorum has not gone after Mitt Romney harder because he is “trying to position for a vice presidential candidacy.”

GOP Kingmaker Sheriff Tasks ‘Cold Case Posse’ With Investigating Obama’s Birth Certificate

For the next fourteen months the crazies will be out in force.  Whatever happened to:

All he has to do is release his birth certificate and all of this will go away…?

Think Progress

Last week, ThinkProgress noted that GOP presidential candidates Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and Michele Bachmann are all courting Maricopa County, Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio in the hopes of securing an endorsement. As “America’s toughest sheriff,” Arpaio is also one of the country’s most radical, especially when it comes to undocumented immigrant, whom the sheriff sweeps up by the dozen and forces to wear pink underwear and live in tents.

The lawman is also a birther, it seems, and one willing to use official resources to pursue the bogus conspiracy theory. As birther website WorldNetDaily gleefully reported:

Arizona’s Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told WND he has assigned a five-member “Cold Case Posse” to investigate the authenticity of Barack Obama’s birth certificate.

The decision, he says, is simply a matter of doing his duty.

This investigation does not involve politics,” Arpaio told WND.

Arpaio’s investigation comes in response to a complaint filed by the Surprise, Arizona Tea Party, which alleges that Obama may be using a forged birth certificate. “I believe Sheriff Arpaio and his Cold Case Posse will be thorough and complete in their investigation,” a spokesman for the group said.

The Cold Case Posse is an officially-sponsored all-volunteer group of people with skills and backgrounds that make them qualified to investigate cases. The group has been inactive in recent months due to “budgetary limitations within the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office,” but apparently a wild goose chase looking into the veracity of the president’s birth certificate is an appropriate use of funds.

Obama’s birth place has long been settled and real estate mogul Donald Trump was drummed out of the GOP presidential field thanks to his fixation on the matter — so why are the GOP’s leading contenders associating themselves with Arpaio, who is hardly mainstream, even without the birther stuff? Courting the sheriff is perhaps not surprising for Perrry, who was reportedly interested in Trump’s endorsement. The Obama campaign even predicted Perry will “probably ask to see the president’s birth certificate,” and Perry’s already secured the backing of birther dentist lawyer Orly Taitz. But Romney and Bachmann have both definitely said Obama was born in the U.S. and have dismissed the birther myth.

Sheriff Joe: Birther?

It seems logical to me.  The man is one fry short of a Happy Meal, so whatever he does is crazy as hell anyway.

Salon

Arizona’s “toughest” lawman tells some kooks that he’ll investigate the president’s birth certificate

Sheriff Joe Arpaio might be a birther, now. A quasi-birther, at least.WorldNetDaily “broke” the “news” that Arizona’s most civil rights-disregarding lawman “has agreed to examine evidence challenging the validity of Barack Obama‘s purported long-form birth certificate in a determination of the president’s eligibility for the 2012 election ballot.” Which certainly sounds like a very good use of the resources of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, right? There is even a picture of Arpaio with Jerome Corsi, author of “Where’s the Birth Certificate,” a book whose title question was answered twice before publication:

Arpaio told the tea-party leaders that he expects political pressure, but he pointed out that as the chief law enforcement officer of Maricopa County, he’s taken an oath to respond to citizens who approach him about enforcing the law.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Justin Griffin confirmed to WND that Arpaio is “waiting to receive all the documentation and all the investigative material from Dr. Jerry Corsi, and then he will look into the matter and compare it to the Arizona revised statutes.”

Ha. Ha ha ha. He picked a great time to join this particular conspiracy theory, months after the president released his original birth certificate, to complement the first, perfectly legally valid one he released years ago. In August of 2011 you really have to be a colossal moron to still believe that the president’s birthplace and presidential eligibility are seriously in doubt. So kudos, Sheriff Joe, for either being a colossal moron or being too scared of a small minority of colossal morons to actually say the truth, which is that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, which is at this point better documented than Arpaio’s own citizenship status. (He looks kinda French, to me.) Even Governor Jan Brewer is smart enough to reject birtherism, and she can barely form sentences.

Arpaio “clarified” his stand by… confirming that he’s looking into it.

“What I have agreed to do, contrary to some published media reports, is simply look at the evidence these people have assembled and examine whether it is within my jurisdiction to investigate the document’s authenticity,” Arpaio said in a written statement Friday.

In the time it took you to write that statement, Sheriff Joe, you could’ve concluded the investigation. With one Google search!

Birthers Sue Esquire for $285M

Keep in mind that the Esquire article was pure satire.

(I wonder if Jonathan Swift was sued for his marvelous and satirical essay from 1729 called A Modest Proposal?  I doubt it.)

Satire is a common literary form of constructive criticism using wit as it’s primary weapon. (Wiki)

The Onion is a great source for political satire on a regular basis. I don’t see them getting sued.

Corsi and Farah appear to be facing an uphill battle in the ongoing question and the  interpretation of: Just what is free speech?

The Daily Beast

President Obama’s birth certificate is out but the birthers aren’t going away: Two prominent birthers are suing Esquire magazine for defamation and damaged business interests.

The complaint by Joseph Farah, editor of WorldNetDaily, and Jerome Corsi, author of Where’s the Birth Certificate? stems from an Esquire parody, headlined “BREAKING! Jerome Corsi’s Birther Book Pulled From Shelves!”

The magazine published the article on its website after President Obama released his birth certificate; many people, however, took it for straight news and the site had to add a note beginning “We committed satire this morning.”

In a statement to Forbes, Esquire notes that the article was marked “humor” and that satire is “an age-old and completely legitimate form of expression.”

He’s Baaaaaack! Donald Trump Says Obama Birth Certificate Fake

Well, look who’s trying to sneak in the back door.

Donald Trump appears to be having second thoughts on his ambition to campaign for the presidency.   He’s also sticking to his “greatest hits” meme, this time by touting  to everyone that will listen, that Obama’s birth certificate is fake.

One would think that Trump learned his lesson when he was literally silenced by:

a) The president releasing his original long form birth certificate

b) The White House correspondence Dinner “Trump smack down”

c) The capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden

The Huffington Post

Donald Trump is inserting himself back into the world of politics, declaring that the White House produced inauthentic documentation of President Barack Obama’s long-form birth certificate last month, according to the conservative website WorldNetDaily.

The online publication, which has come under scrutiny for propagating the debunked conspiracy theory that the president was not born in the United States, reports that Trump regards the records as fake.

Upon the release of Obama’s birth certificate, Trump took credit for the disclosure. At the time, he was openly mulling a campaign for president in the next election cycle.

After nearly one month of remaining mum on the issue, Trump reportedly told WND that a computer expert assessed the document released by the White House and concluded that it was computer-generated and forged.

“There is certainly a chance that he was not born in this country,” said the billionaire, according to WND. “Now if he was not born in this country, that means he can’t be president. It’s very simple.”

Earlier this month, Trump signaled that he would forgo mounting a campaign for president in 2012. On Wednesday, however, the Daily Caller reported that while Trump will not seek the Republican presidential nomination, he is exploring the possibility of vying for the White House next year as an independent.

During an appearance on “Fox & Friends” earlier this week, Trump wouldn’t rule out reversing his decision and signaled he still could run in 2012.

UPDATE: Mother Jones relays a statement from Trump pushing back against the report released by WND on his posture toward the president’s birth certificate.

…Frankly, many people were surprised that it took so long for this to happen. Is his birth certificate legitimate? I hope it is for the good of the country, but that’s for experts to determine–not me. I have not read the book written by Jerry Corsi nor did we discuss whether or not the birth certificate was computer generated or in any way fabricated. I merely asked him how his book was doing and wished him good luck.

Ann Coulter To Gay Conservatives: Marriage ‘Is Not A Civil Right — You’re Not Black’

She’s baaaack…

Huffington Post

Nobody ever said Ann Coulter was going to play nice during her time at Homocon, a summit held by the gay conservative group GOProud over the weekend, not even the organizers who insisted that she be there. Perhaps it came as little surprise to them, then, when the conservative pundit stood before the group of 150 attendees and aggressively railed against gay marriage.

Marriage “is not a civil right — you’re not black,” Coulter told the crowd, building upon an argument that claimed the equal protections provided by the Fourteenth Amendment — and potentially used to build a case for marriage equality — were only applicable to black people.

Coulter, who was dropped from a recent event by conservative publication WorldNetDaily for her supposed traitorous behavior in headlining the gay event, wasn’t done taking social issues to the heart of perhaps the most socially liberal faction within the GOP.

Talking Points Memo‘s Megan Carpentier on Coulter’s speech:

In fact, despite opening her speech with a joke about the difficulty of “coming out” as a fiscal conservative to one’s parents — something she congratulated the attendees on — Coulter’s speech to GOProud mystifyingly focused on social issues and not the fiscal and foreign policy issues that brought most of the attendees there. For instance, she told GOProud that the conservative gay rights movement ought to make common cause with the anti-abortion movement because, she said, “as soon as they find the gay gene, you know who’s getting aborted.” Coulter also made a forceful case against sex education in schools, accusing liberals of attempting to teach kindergartners about “fisting” (which garnered her a heckler, who shouted out “What’s wrong with fisting?”) and told the crowd that most parents didn’t want their children learning about the “homosexual lifestyle” instead of reading and writing.

But the attendees of Homocon can’t say she didn’t warn them — literally.

“I should warn you: I’ve never failed to talk gays out of gay marriage,” Coulter said at the beginning of the speech.

And the organizers of the event didn’t seem surprised.      Continue reading…
