The 5 Wackiest Things I Heard at the NRA Convention

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin waves before speaking during the 2013 NRA Annual Meeting and Exhibits at the George R. Brown Convention Center on May 3 in Houston

I’m certain there were many more, but according to the source below, for instance they left out Glenn Beck.  Nonetheless, here are the wackiest from BW…

Business Week

What to do in the wake of a major victory in Washington over gun control proponents? That was the challenge facing the National Rifle Association at its May 4-5 annual meeting in Houston.

At various rallies and speeches, here’s what some NRA headliners had to say:

1. Wayne LaPierre: I told you so. Looking more relaxed than in his pugnacious post-Newtown massacre appearances, the NRA’s chief executive officer congratulated himself on being right that President Obama would open his second term by pushing for firearm restrictions. Obama did make LaPierre seem prescient. In Houston the NRA honcho upped the ante, claiming that the president “launched an historic, all-out attack, a siege on our gun rights.” (Really? The centerpiece of the Obama agenda, comprehensive background checks, is an idea that LaPierre endorsed in 1999.) The NRA has added hundreds of thousands of new members since Newtown, bringing its rolls to 5 million, according to LaPierre, and he wants to double that. “They’re coming at us with a vengeance to destroy us,” he warned. “It’s up to us to get to work right now with an NRA large enough and strong enough to defeat” any foe. Translation: open your checkbooks, gun owners.

2. Bushmaster: Never say you’re sorry. The Newtown shooter slaughtered 20 first-graders and six educators with a semiautomatic military-style rifle equipped with 30-round magazines. The manufacturer of that weapon, Bushmaster, part of the Freedom Group conglomerate, came in for tough scrutiny. Facing investor protests, Freedom Group’s owner, the New York private equity firm Cerberus Capital, announced it would sell the country’s largest gun-and-ammo manufacturer, although a buyer hasn’t been announced. Meanwhile, Bushmaster wasn’t lowering its profile at the NRA confab. At its booth on the bustling exposition floor, Bushmaster invited children to pose for photos with a .50-caliber sniper rifle with a 30-inch barrel. The BA50 offers “monstrous long-range power.” In a promotional booklet, George Kollitides, Freedom Group’s CEO and a former member of the NRA nominating committee, said Bushmaster builds “each rifle with purpose and passion—yours.”

3. Sarah Palin: Malign the media. Wearing a form-fitting T-shirt that said “Women Hunt,” the 2008 vice presidential candidate reminded listeners that “the elite media” are still out to get them. “That same media is now the reliable poodle-skirted cheerleader for the president that writes the book on exploiting tragedy,” she added. (I wasn’t around in the 1950s, but did cheerleaders wear poodle skirts on the sidelines?) This followed Palin’s inventive insult a few days earlier, when she scorned attendees at the April 27 White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington as “D.C. ass-clowns” enjoying “a nerd prom.”

4. Representative Steve Stockman: Impeach Obama! Aides to the congressman, who invited pro-gun guitarist Ted Nugent as his plus-one to the State of the Union Address in February, handed out copies of a newspaper entitled NRA Convention News. There Stockman suggested: “Obama Abuses of Power Could Lead to Articles of Impeachment.” The East Texas Republican lawmaker described the president’s “full-scale executive branch assault on our Second Amendment rights” as “questionable—and possibly criminal.” Stockman reminded constituents: “We all saw how Bill Clinton abused his power as president back then, but Barack Obama blows him out of the water!”

5. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee: Let’s meet halfway. While some 70,000 NRA celebrants walked the 400,000 square feet of Houston’s convention center, a couple dozen protesters kept vigil across the street in Discovery Park.

“We’re not against the NRA,” said Representative Jackson Lee, a Democrat from gun-friendly Houston who supported the failed bipartisan compromise on expanded background checks. “The only question we’re asking this group is, ‘Can you put down your arms of politics and lift up your arms of reconciliation?’”

This may have been the strangest line uttered all weekend, in that the answer was so obviously, NO! The NRA has adopted “Stand and Fight” as its battle slogan. Inside the convention hall there was not even a whiff of olive branches.

NRA Head’s ‘Shameful’ Question Draws Ire

Wayne Lapierre Boston

The Huffington Post

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre sparked controversy on Saturday when he asked, ”How many Bostonians wished they had a gun two weeks ago?”

The comments came in the middle of his speech at the annual NRA members meeting in Houston, Texas.

LaPierre explained that during the Boston lockdown that took place while police were chasing the bombing suspects, “frightened citizens [were] sheltered in place with no means to defend themselves.”

He said:

“Imagine living in a large metropolitan area where lawful firearms ownership is heavily regulated and discouraged. Imagine waking up to a phone call from the police, warning that a terrorist event is occurring outside and ordering you to stay inside your home.”

“DISGUSTING. Shameful,” one Twitter user remarked. ”SERIOUSLY, BRO?” asked another.

As NBC’s Kasie Hunt points out, this is the first time that the NRA has linked the Boston Marathon bombings to guns.

LaPierre then accused gun control advocates of exploiting tragedies like the Sandy Hook school shooting.

“They use tragedy to try to blame us, to shame us into compromising our freedom for their political agenda,” he said. “No matter what it takes, we will never give up or compromise our constitutional freedom, not one single inch!”

Also speaking at the NRA convention were Second Vice President Allan Cors and chief lobbyist Chris Cox, who offered simliar rhetoric.

“Our gun rights are never safe,” said Cors.

Here’s the full transcript of LaPierre’s remarks.

10 things you need to know today: May 5, 2013

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chairs a cabinet meeting at the Herzl Museum on May 5 in Jerusalem.

This is one of my favorite features on The Week website…

The Week

Israeli strikes in Syria continue, the California wildfires calm down, and more

1. SYRIA CALLS ISRAELI ATTACK AN ACT OF WAR
A Syrian official called Israel’s attack against its military research facility a “declaration of war” on Sunday. Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al Mekdad told CNN that the attack, which followed an airstrike late last week, represented an alliance between Islamic terrorists and Israel. Neither Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor the Israeli military commented on the U.S. claim of an airstrike, but Israel has long said it would target any transfer of weapons to Hezbollah or other terrorist groups. [CNN]

2. TSARNAEV PARENTS REQUEST SECOND AUTOPSY
An independent autopsy on the body of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev is scheduled to be performed Sunday, a step requested by Tsarnaev’s parents, who believe their sons were framed by the U.S. government. The Tsarnaevs say the autopsy results could undermine the U.S. officials’ account of Tamerlan’s death by showing that he was not run over by his brother, Dzhokhar. That, the parents believe, would throw into question law enforcement officials’ entire account of the case. [Boston Globe]

3. EIGHT WESTERN SOLDIERS KILLED IN BLOODY DAY IN AFGHANISTAN
Eight soldiers with the American-led military coalition in Afghanistan were killed Saturday, making it the bloodiest day this year for Western troops fighting in the country. Two were shot in an insider attack, one died in a small-arms attack and five Americans were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb, according to statements from the International Security Assistance Force and Afghan officials. Seven of the slain soldiers were American. [New York Times]

4. COOL AIR TAMPS DOWN CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES
A big cool-down calmed a huge wildfire burning in Southern California’s coastal mountains Saturday. High winds and witheringly hot, dry air were replaced by the normal flow of damp air off the Pacific, significantly reducing fire activity. “The fire isn’t really running and gunning,” said Tom Kruschke, a Ventura County Fire Department spokesman. Despite the favorable conditions, evacuation orders remained in place for residents of several areas. [Washington Post]

6. DURBIN USES BOSTON TO PUSH IMMIGRATION BILL
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin is using the terrorist bombings in Boston to push for his immigration reform bill. On Sunday’s State of the Union, Durbin said poor information sharing between federal agencies that came to light after the attacks would be fixed in the Senate’s immigration bill. ”There’s not enough coordination between these different agencies so that we know someone should not have been readmitted to the United States,” the Illinois senator said. “Our bill addresses that directly.” The Senate begins work on its immigration bill this week. [Politico]

Voting has ended in Malaysia in what is widely expected to be the most closely contested general election in the country’s history. It will be several hours before the first results are known. PM Najib Razak’s National Front coalition is up against Pakatan Rakyat, a three-party alliance headed by Anwar Ibrahim. Voters were faced with returning the ruling party, in power for 56 years, or choosing an untested opposition. Ahead of the polls, allegations of various forms of fraud emerged. [BBC]

Nutty New NRA president Jim Porter still fighting war against ‘Northern Aggression’

JIm Porter, who was named NRA President on March 2, 2013, spoke at The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Annual Meeting hosted by the Wallkill Rod and Gun Club on June 9, 2012 when he was the NRA Vice-President.

Did someone forget to tell the old fella that the Civil War ended in 1865?

Daily News

An Alabama lawyer, Porter calls U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder ‘un-American’ and intends to fight in court to repeal tough new gun-control laws passed after Newtown.

The new president of the NRA is a good ol’ Southern boy, who sounds even crazier than the group’s gun-nut mouthpiece Wayne LaPierre.

Alabama lawyer Jim Porter has called U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder “rabidly un-American” and proudly spews the Confederate line on the Civil War.

In a June speech, Porter noted the NRA was “started by some Yankee generals who didn’t like the way my Southern boys had the ability to shoot in what we call the ‘War of Northern Aggression.’ ”

“Now y’all might call it the Civil War, but we call it the ‘War of Northern Aggression’ down South,” Porter said to the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association.

He also advocates training all U.S. civilians to use standard military firearms so “they’re ready to fight tyranny.”

“Every time you take your nephew out to the gun club, every time you take your daughter skeet shooting, every time you take your grandchildren out, we’re passing on the legacy of freedom,” Porter said in the June speech.

Jim Porter says the NRA was ‘started by some Yankee generals who didn’t like the way my Southern boys had the ability to shoot in what we call the ‘War of Northern Aggression.’

He went on to say that fighting for the Second Amendment was “vital to the very fabric of this country.”

“We got the pads put on, we got our helmets strapped on, we’re cinched up, we’re ready to fight, we’re out there fighting every day,” he said to loud applause.

Nearly a year later, Porter — currently vice president of the NRA and chairman of its Legal Affairs Committee — is bent on overturning recently tightened gun laws that states, including New York, adopted after the Newtown massacre.

“At this stage in the NRA’s history, Jim Porter will be the perfect match for president,” said outgoing President David Keene.

“We will have to move to courts to undo the restrictions placed on gun owners’ rights in New York, Connecticut, Maryland and Colorado,” Keene told The Washington Times.

Porter, son of former National Rifle Association President Irvine Porter, will be in Houston on Friday to kick off the organization’s national convention.

On the eve of the three-day event, the country’s latest shooting in a public place occurred just a few miles from where the group is meeting.

Cops said a man opened fire inside Houston’s Bush International Airport on Wednesday afternoon and died in a confrontation with law enforcement officials. Police believe the man shot himself.

Porter, a former Alabama assistant attorney general, is set to begin his two-year term on Monday.

“I am honored to be able to continue their work to ensure that the inalienable rights to keep and bear firearms for the defense of one’s country, family and self is protected for future generations,” he said in a statement.

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre will remain the public face of the group.

The outspoken LaPierre has bashed all government efforts to curb gun violence through legislation.

Following the Dec. 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, LaPierre proposed putting armed guards in every school in America.

“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” he said.

If You Want To Make The Case For Keeping Your Guns, Stop Threatening To Kill The President…

ObamaTYRANNY

…it’s just that simple.

Addicting Info

The official line of gun advocates is that the majority of gun owners are responsible and that we shouldn’t punish the many for the actions of the few. Never mind that nearly every law that’s ever been on the books punishes the many for the actions of the few. Never mind that no one with any sort of power is suggesting that guns be banned.

Polls disagree with the NRA’s official line. 85% percent of gun owners and 87% of NRA members agree that there should be sensible restrictions on guns. The other 13%-15% is comprised of NRA leadership and people who, in an attempt to show the nation that their guns should not be taken away, make the case for exactly why their guns should be taken away.

Here are a few lovely examples, courtesy of Tom Joad on Facebook:

Surprisingly, only one of these Twitter profiles, at least as of publication, seems to have been taken down.

I’m sure I could collect examples of these for weeks and the odds of finding someone who’s more than just talk is pretty slim, but pretty slim is not the same as zero.

Why should any of this be a surprise when it’s the largest gun organization in the world that is creating a culture of violence? The NRA, once an advocate for gun safety, has become a safe-haven for people who think only with their guns. Is it a coincidence that its number two spokesman, Ted Nugent, spouts some of the most violent rhetoric heard outside of prison? Is it a coincidence that a branch of the NRA was caught handing out treasonous materialIs it a coincidence that Wayne LaPierre, the head of the NRA, calls the President a tyrant? Is it a coincidence that the NRA’s members are simultaneously being taught that the answer to tyranny is guns, the bigger, the better?

I don’t believe for a moment that LaPierre actually believes the President is a tyrant. I don’t believe he wants to see him dead, nor do I believe that most of these Twitter posters have the fortitude to commit themselves to die in prison. I do, however, know that LaPierre wants to sell guns and the more he can gin up his membership, the happier he makes his employers.

While LaPierre would probably never pull the trigger on a human being, he will continue to incite people to do the dirty work for him. Whether the victims are small children or the President of the United States, it’s doubtful he’ll lose sleep.

The Nine Most Insane Quotes From The NRA’s New Apocalyptic Op-Ed

Think Progress

Wednesday afternoon, National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre published a bizarre, paranoid screed on the Daily Caller outlining a series of wildly implausible scenarios in which (among other things) the police will cease to exist because of the deficit and al-Qaeda will provoke the government into stealing your guns. Here are the nine most absurd quotes from LaPierre’s piece:

1. Violent Latino Gangs Are Out To Get You: “Latin American drug gangs have invaded every city of significant size in the United States. Phoenix is already one of the kidnapping capitals of the world, and though the states on the U.S./Mexico border may be the first places in the nation to suffer from cartel violence, by no means are they the last.”

2. And They’re Streaming Over The Border: “The president flagrantly defies the 2006 federal law ordering the construction of a secure border fence along the entire Mexican border. So the border today remains porous not only to people seeking jobs in the U.S., but to criminals whose jobs are murder, rape, robbery and kidnapping.”

3. And So Is Al-Qaeda: “Ominously, the border also remains open to agents of al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations. Numerous intelligence sources have confirmed that foreign terrorists have identified the southern U.S. border as their path of entry into the country.”

4. And Obama Will Use Them As An Excuse To Take Your Guns: “A heinous act of mass murder—either by terrorists or by some psychotic who should have been locked up long ago—will be the pretext to unleash a tsunami of gun control.”

5. If You Want Gun Safety, You Want Civilization To Collapse: “After Hurricane Sandy, we saw the hellish world that the gun prohibitionists see as their utopia. Looters ran wild in south Brooklyn. There was no food, water or electricity. And if you wanted to walk several miles to get supplies, you better get back before dark, or you might not get home at all.”

6. Thanks To Obama, There Will Soon Be No Cops: “Meanwhile, President Obama is leading this country to financial ruin, borrowing over a trillion dollars a year for phony “stimulus” spending and other payoffs for his political cronies. Nobody knows if or when the fiscal collapse will come, but if the country is broke, there likely won’t be enough money to pay for police protection. And the American people know it.”

7. But The NRA Is Totally Not Paranoid: “Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Riots. Terrorists. Gangs. Lone criminals. These are perils we are sure to face—not just maybe. It’s not paranoia to buy a gun. It’s survival. It’s responsible behavior, and it’s time we encourage law-abiding Americans to do just that.”

8. It’s Just That The Collapse Of Civilization Is Right Around The Corner: “We, the American people, clearly see the daunting forces we will undoubtedly face: terrorists, crime, drug gangs, the possibility of Euro-style debt riots, civil unrest or natural disaster.”

9. And We Shall Overcome: “We [the NRA] are the largest civil rights organization in the world.”

LaPierre’s rant after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary was of a similar tenor.

NRA head LaPierre shocked that Fox News called him out

The NRA can’t hide behind the protective bubble of conservative TV and talk radio, without encountering some backlash from time to time, even from such an insular group…

America Blog

You know you have to be on the far fringe of right-wing extremism when you get called out by Fox News.

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre didn’t know what hit him when Fox’s own Chris Wallace attacked him over the tasteless and much criticized NRA TV ad that targeted the Obama girls.

And of course, as we found out later, the NRA ad was a total lie.  There are no “armed guards” at the Obama girls’ schools (and the NRA wasn’t referring to Secret Service).

In LaPierre’s world, the only answer to gun control is a police state where everyone has their own police defense team everywhere. Every man an army.  Sounds dreamy, doesn’t it?  And the Teabaggers support this NRA police state because…why? Does their obsession with guns mean more to them than freedom itself? How bizarre.

Fox News Host Blows Up At NRA Head: ‘That’s Ridiculous And You Know It, Sir!’

At times Chris Wallace manifests a few of his late father, Mike Wallace’s traits.  Not often, but now and then…

Think Progress

Fox News host Chris Wallace tore into National Rifle Association’s contention that President Obama and other elites are hypocritical for employing security guards to protect their children, while downplaying the importance of armed protection in preventing gun violence.

During a heated exchange with NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre on Sunday, Wallace played a clip of a now infamous NRA ad criticizing Obama for relying on Secret Service to guard his children and asked if the organization believed that every child in America faces a threat similar to that of the Obama kids. LaPierre said that they do, leading Wallace to forcefully push back against the gun chief, saying, “that’s ridiculous and you know it, Sir!” Watch it:

Wallace went on to note that armed guards in school will not protect children “in the shopping mall, in the movie theater, on the street” and shamed the gun lobby for seeking to use class as a wedge in the gun debate. He noted that LaPierre himself relies on armed security guards and asked, “Does that make you an elite, and out-of-touch elite, because you have security?” “This idea of an elite class is just nonsense.”

Throughout his appearance, LaPierre maintained that universal background checks or limits on assault weapons would infringe on the rights of law abiding Americans and could never deter hardened criminals or gang members from obtaining fire arms. He insisted that only armed guards — the kind that Obama uses to protect his children — and increased prosecution of criminals could reduce gun violence.
