NRA head LaPierre shocked that Fox News called him out

The NRA can’t hide behind the protective bubble of conservative TV and talk radio, without encountering some backlash from time to time, even from such an insular group…

America Blog

You know you have to be on the far fringe of right-wing extremism when you get called out by Fox News.

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre didn’t know what hit him when Fox’s own Chris Wallace attacked him over the tasteless and much criticized NRA TV ad that targeted the Obama girls.

And of course, as we found out later, the NRA ad was a total lie.  There are no “armed guards” at the Obama girls’ schools (and the NRA wasn’t referring to Secret Service).

In LaPierre’s world, the only answer to gun control is a police state where everyone has their own police defense team everywhere. Every man an army.  Sounds dreamy, doesn’t it?  And the Teabaggers support this NRA police state because…why? Does their obsession with guns mean more to them than freedom itself? How bizarre.

Chris Christie Slams NRA Ad For Targeting President’s Children

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gets it right, once again…

Voice 4 America

Speaking out against an advertisement recently released by the National Rifle Association, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie slams the NRA, criticizing their use of the President’s children as an example to cite the hypocrisy in gun control elitism due to the First Family’s protection from the Secret Service.  ”I’m a father who is a public figure, who has four children and my children had no choice realistically in what I decided to do with my career and what affect that has had on their lives.”   The criticisms come as the gun control debate intensifies, drawing ire from both sides as the issues that cause gun violence are brought up to debate.

NRA targets Obama’s kids in a scathing new ad

Malia Obama, Sasha Obama and first lady Michelle Obama listen as President Obama speaks at the DNC in Charlotte, North Carolina on September 6, 2012.

This is the latest despicable piece of crap coming from the not so bright folks at the NRA…

MSNBC’s The Last Word

The National Rifle Association is getting personal. In a new web video the gun lobby calls President Obama an “elitist hypocrite” for using the Secret Service to protect his two children, Sasha, age 11, and Malia, age 14.

The ad, posted to the NRA’s Stand and Fight website, criticizes Obama for opposing the NRA’s proposal of increasing the number of armed guards in schools as a way to prevent shootings like the Sandy Hook massacre.

“Are the president’s kids more important than yours?” asks the voiceover on the ad. “Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school?” It continues, “Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, but he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security. Protection for their kids and gun-free zones for ours.”

The video does not show pictures of the president’s daughters, using instead images of outspoken gun control advocates such as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Vice President Joe Biden.

The ad apparently served as a preemptive strike against President Obama, who plans to unveil his high anticipated proposals to reduce gun violence on Wednesday. Along with school security, mental health and the entertainment industry, the president is also expected to recommend universal background checks, a ban on high-capacity magazines and some sort of assault weapons ban.

Last week, Obama signed a bill to restore lifetime Secret Service protection for presidents elected after 1997, which includes himself and George W. Bush, and presidents in the future, along with their wives. The law gives children of former presidents protection until the age of 16.

George W. Bush signed a directive four days before he left office, authorizing the Secret Service to provide a period of extended protection for his daughters Jenna and Barbara. Bill Clinton had also authorized extended coverage for his daughter Chelsea when his term ended. The Secret Service asked that the period of additional protection be kept confidential.

Letter of Resignation Sent By Bush to Rifle Association

Being Liberal

Following is the letter of resignation sent by former President George Bush to the National Rifle Association: May 3, 1995

Dear Mr. Washington,

I was outraged when, even in the wake of the Oklahoma City tragedy, Mr. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of N.R.A., defended his attack on federal agents as “jack-booted thugs.” To attack Secret Service agents or A.T.F. people or any government law enforcement people as “wearing Nazi bucket helmets and black storm trooper uniforms” wanting to “attack law abiding citizens” is a vicious slander on good people.

Al Whicher, who served on my [ United States Secret Service ] detail when I was Vice President and President, was killed in Oklahoma City. He was no Nazi. He was a kind man, a loving parent, a man dedicated to serving his country — and serve it well he did.

In 1993, I attended the wake for A.T.F. agent Steve Willis, another dedicated officer who did his duty. I can assure you that this honorable man, killed by weird cultists, was no Nazi.

John Magaw, who used to head the U.S.S.S. and now heads A.T.F., is one of the most principled, decent men I have ever known. He would be the last to condone the kind of illegal behavior your ugly letter charges. The same is true for the F.B.I.’s able Director Louis Freeh. I appointed Mr. Freeh to the Federal Bench. His integrity and honor are beyond question.

Both John Magaw and Judge Freeh were in office when I was President. They both now serve in the current administration. They both have badges. Neither of them would ever give the government’s “go ahead to harass, intimidate, even murder law abiding citizens.” (Your words)

I am a gun owner and an avid hunter. Over the years I have agreed with most of N.R.A.’s objectives, particularly your educational and training efforts, and your fundamental stance in favor of owning guns.

However, your broadside against Federal agents deeply offends my own sense of decency and honor; and it offends my concept of service to country. It indirectly slanders a wide array of government law enforcement officials, who are out there, day and night, laying their lives on the line for all of us.

You have not repudiated Mr. LaPierre’s unwarranted attack. Therefore, I resign as a Life Member of N.R.A., said resignation to be effective upon your receipt of this letter. Please remove my name from your membership list.

Sincerely,

[ signed ] George Bush

Secret Service Visits Man Who Hung Obama Effigy From Tree As ‘Spooky’ Halloween Decoration

eddie million obama in effigy

Right wing politicians want to take us back decades in terms of individual rights.   They and their constituents want to take us back decades before civil rights legislation, including voting rights.  One of their “dog whistles” to their constituents is “we’re gonna take our country back!”

What this should tell every progressive and forward leaning citizen is that the GOP has put us in a dangerous place.   Not only that, their low-information, nay, crazy supporters are perfect subjects to cling to the GOP perception of dominance.

Just recently a raucous women who was about to be arrested told police “it’s ok, I’m a Republican…”  They honestly think that the GOP has given them their “privileged” status back and placed minorities “where they belong”.

The following article depicts a man hanging the President of The United States in effigy.  However, it’s not the first time during this election season that this has happened.

The Huffington Post

A California man’s Halloween yard decoration earned him a meeting with the Secret Service earlier this week.

In an interview with the Press-Enterprise, Eddie Million of Moreno Valley admitted that his addition of an effigy of President Barack Obama with a noose around its neck was a low point in his attempt to turn his house into a “spooky” scene for a Halloween party.

“I started thinking how bad it looked, and I took it down immediately,” Million told reporters after being questioned by Secret Service agents on Tuesday. “If I had it to do all over again, I absolutely wouldn’t have done it. It was not meant to offend anybody. It was just supposed to be a decoration.”

The episode was initially touched off by complaints from neighbors, which eventually led to local media reports and a visit from police at the beginning of the week. Million said the Secret Service interviewed him and asked for his information, but took no further action.

Inflammatory displays — whatever their actual intents or purposes — have grown increasingly controversial as the nation approaches Election Day. A speech at the Republican National Convention by actor Clint Eastwood to an empty seat that was supposed to represent Obama set off a wave of empty chair “lynching” displays.

Others have been more direct and vitriolic. A yard sign in Aspen, Colo. that read “Kill Obama” recently drew the attention of the Secret Service, who paid the property owner a visit.

Republican candidate posts his gun on Facebook: ‘Welcome to Tennessee, Mr. Obama’

Brad Staats speaks to WKRN

These Tea party characters will never learn:  Barack Obama is the President of the United States, not some damned “runaway slave”.  I’m sure this guy will get a visit from The United States Secret Service.

The Raw Story

A Republican nominee for Congress is defending his decision to post a photo of his gun on Facebook along with the message, “Welcome to Tennessee, Mr. Obama.”

In a Saturday night Facebook post, Brad Staats attached a photo of his silver and black Colt 1911 semi-automatic pistol along with a message directed at President Barack Obama:

Many people in Tennessee keep asking me about my opinion on Second Amendment rights. Apparently Tennesseans are part of that crazy crowd that Obama says “cling to their religion and guns.” Well, then I must be part of that crazy crowd. Here is something that I usually have with me. Welcome to Tennessee Mr. Obama, where we appreciate our 2nd Amendment rights and the Constitution that was wisely given to us by our founding fathers.

“Good Lord, no,” Staats told The Tennessean when asked if he had threatened the commander in chief. “Absolutely not. I’m not one of those that would ever threaten the president. He’s probably got enough of his own stuff to worry about without me.”

Staats later wrote on Facebook that his remarks had been “completely taken out of context.”

“My post from Friday was regarding the fact that the UN Small Arms Treaty, passed last week will undermine our Second Amendment Rights,” the candidate explained, although his original post had never mentioned the UN arms treaty.

“I’m going to say what I mean and mean what I say and I want Tennesseans and Americans to know that I’m not going to back up on what I say,” Staats insisted to WKRN on Monday.

“I do want President Obama to know as well as the rest of Congress and everyone else regarding our constitutional rights, don’t tread on America’s Constitution. I think that your liberties, your life can be defended by the proper instructed use of a handgun,” he said, adding that his mother’s life had been saved because she carried a weapon.

“She would have either been raped or murdered had she not had a handgun in her car. [She] actually got ran off the road and it was obvious she was getting ready to be assailed.”

The Secret Service said it was aware of the Facebook posting and would investigate if necessary, according to The Tennessean.

Staats is hoping to unseat Democratic Rep. Jim Cooper in November.

Michelle Obama Threat: D.C. Police Officer Allegedly Said He’d Shoot First Lady, Report Says

This is rather creepy.

Thank goodness the DC Police and  Secret Service are on top of this threat…

The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON — A District of Columbia police officer has been taken off a motorcycle escort for White House officials after he allegedly said he’d shoot first lady Michelle Obama and “then used his phone to retrieve a picture of the firearm he said he would use,” according to The Washington Post.

The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating and the Secret Service has been told of the alleged threat, the Post reports:

The motorman allegedly made the comments Wednesday morning as several officers from the Special Operations Division discussed threats against President Obama. It was not immediately clear where the alleged conversation took place or exactly how many officers took part in the conversation.During that conversation, the officials said, the officer allegedly said he would shoot the First Lady and then used his phone to retrieve a picture of the firearm he said he would use. It was not immediately clear what type of firearm was allegedly shown.

An officer overheard the alleged threat and reported it to a police lieutenant at the Division, who immediately notified superiors, the officials said.

The officer has been moved to administrative duty as the incident is being investigated, according to the Post.

MPD Chief Cathy Lanier told WRC-TV/NBC4: “There is conflicting information about what the officer said. … Internal Affairs will get to the bottom of it.”

This is a developing story…

Republicans Politicize Secret Service, GSA Scandals

Karl Rove

I have to agree with Karl Rove, which in and of itself is an anomaly.

If history is any indication, when the GOP impeached Bill Clinton  for lying and obstruction of justice, Clinton’s job approval poll numbers remained high.  It appears that most Americans, regardless of party affiliation, believe in fairness and political overreaching can backfire on the accusing party.

TPM DC

Karl Rove warned Republicans that attempts to link President Obama to the ongoing Secret Service and GSA scandals would be perceived as political overreach. But so far, they haven’t been able to help themselves.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) pushed full speed ahead this week, writing a letterto the White House seeking answers on whether others were somehow involved in the Secret Service prostitution scandal. Then on Tuesday he suggested on anIowa radio station that the Colombian prostitutes at the heart of the inquiry may have been Russian spies.

House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA), the GOP’s point man for unearthing Obama-related scandals, and Homeland Security Chairman Peter King (R-NY), are insisting that more people were involved in the Secret Service scandal than the agency is admitting.

Regarding the General Services Administration employees’ spending spree in Las Vegas, the GOP has been no less restrained.

Issa portrayed it as evidence of “the most corrupt government in history.” During a Tuesday appearance on Bloomberg TV, he linked the scandal to the bank bailout and stimulus in an attempt to bash Washington’s out-of-control spending. “This money going though the hands of political leaders is corrupting the process, whether it is Solyndra, GSA or a number of other scandals,” Issa said.

High-ranking Republican Rep. John Mica (FL) claimed the White House “knew about it, did nothing, kept it quiet” until forced to ‘fess up. He then admitted that the scandal helps him attack Obama. “No, no, I’m not scoring political points,” Mica said on Fox. “But I am labeling [President Obama] as a big spender.”

To date there is no evidence that the White House tried to cover up the scandals or that any high-level Obama aides, let alone the president himself, were involved. The scandals have dominated Beltway chatter for weeks, and several individuals guilty of wrongdoing, along with the GSA chief, have already been forced out of the agencies.

The political phenomenon is one both parties fall prey to when they believe they have a winning story: Incessantly push until you overdo it and surrender the high ground. Democrats recently fell into a similar trap when they took the RNC chairman’s “war on caterpillars” line out of context, and when they hammered Romney’s call to cut public funding for Planned Parenthood by falsely implying he wanted to “get rid of” the organization itself.

These sorts of missteps risk being seen by voters as partisan opportunism, as Rove warned his fellow Republicans last Sunday.

“Every argument in politics generates a counter-argument,” Rove said on Fox News. “And the counter-argument that will be generated if Republicans try and make this a big push against President Obama is the ordinary American will look there and say, you know what, that is going over the top.”

Ted Nugent: ‘I’m A Non-Violent Guy, I Don’t Threaten’ [UPDATED]

Well, Mr. Nugent, you could have fooled me given the fact that you have a rather uncanny passion for guns…

The Huffington Post

Rocker Ted Nugent said Wednesday that he had never and would never threaten anyone’s life.

“That’s ridiculous,” Nugent told radio talk show host and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R). “I mean, I’m a non-violent guy, I don’t threaten. I wouldn’t waste my time threatening, I’ve never threatened anyone’s life in my life. I will not threaten anyone’s life. I certainly wouldn’t threaten the life of the president, or anybody in public office, or anybody anywhere.”

(Listen to the interview above)

Nugent confirmed that he was contacted by the Secret Service, who are investigating his comments during the NRA convention that he would be “dead or in jail by this time next year” if President Barack Obama is re-elected. Nugent, who has a history of inflammatory comments, said the Secret Service was just doing their job in investigating what he called the “preposterous, outrageous, deceitful dishonest claim that I threatened anyone’s life.”

“I respect their duty to do so,” he said. “The rules of engagement for the Secret Service is to respond even when someone as maniacal as a Wasserman Schultz or Pelosi or Boxer or Feinstein” complains.

“They want to shut me up, and it ain’t going to happen,” Nugent said.

UPDATE – 1:25 p.m.:

The Secret Service has also confirmed they will interview Nugent, according to NBC News. Nugent said he will meet with them Thursday, but the Secret Service could not confirm a date.
