Hillary Clinton: ‘I Support Marriage For Lesbian And Gay Couples’

Is this any indication that Mrs. Clinton has decided to run in 2016?  Some might say it’s too soon to tell.  We’ll see…

Think Progress

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D) has come out for marriage equality:

CLINTON: LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones, and they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage. That’s why I support marriage for lesbian and gay couples. I support it personally and as a matter of policy and law, embedded in a broader effort to advance equality and opportunity for LGBT Americans and all Americans.

Watch Clinton’s full remarks in a video released by the Human Rights Campaign:

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Clinton was  outspoken supporter of LGBT equality, but like President Obama at the time, had not yet come out for marriage equality. During her tenure as Secretary, she largely stayed silent on political issues, but did provide clues that her position had changed. In June 2011, Clinton offered her approval of New York’s passage of marriage equality, calling the legislature’s vote “historic.” In December 2011, she delivered amonumental speech to the United Nations, declaring that “gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights” and that to support LGBT equality is to be “on the right side of history.”

Obama Seeks to Repair Israeli Relations

In spite of the poll mentioned at the end of this article, I truly hope for a constructive dialogue that would start the “peace process” again…

Political Wire

As he embarks this week on his first presidential trip to Israel, President Obama “will seek to clarify his support for the Jewish state’s theory of its historical roots — addressing one of several subtle, but essential, missteps he is attempting to fix in his second term. The trip is a mission of remedial diplomacy, rather than the kind of specific peace initiative common for previous presidential visits,” the Washington Post reports.

“Obama will also travel to the West Bank city of Ramallah during his four-day trip for air-clearing meetings with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and other leaders, who are deeply disappointed by Obama and his staunch opposition to their diplomatic push for statehood through the United Nations.”

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds Americans by a wide margin sympathize more with Israel than the Palestinian Authority when it comes to thorny Middle East politics, 55^ to 9%.

Susan Rice withdraws from consideration for secretary of state

This should make Senators McCain, Graham and Ayotte quite happy.  I’m not…

The Washington Post

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew her name from the list of candidates for secretary of state Thursday afternoon, ending a weeks-long fight with Republicans over statements she made on television talk shows shortly after the attack that killed four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11.

In a letter to President Obama, Rice said: “I respectfully request that you no longer consider my candidacy at this time.T he position of Secretary of State should never be politicized. . ..I am saddened that we have reached this point, even before you have decided whom to nominate. We cannot afford such an irresponsible distraction from the most pressing issues facing the American people.”

Obama, who had defended Rice on several occasions in recent weeks, accepted her decision and issued the following statement:

“Today, I spoke to Ambassador Susan Rice, and accepted her decision to remove her name from consideration for Secretary of State. For two decades, Susan has proven to be an extraordinarily capable, patriotic, and passionate public servant. As my Ambassador to the United Nations, she plays an indispensable role in advancing America’s interests. Already, she has secured international support for sanctions against Iran and North Korea, worked to protect the people of Libya, helped achieve an independent South Sudan, stood up for Israel’s security and legitimacy, and served as an advocate for UN reform and the human rights of all people. I am grateful that Susan will continue to serve as our Ambassador at the United Nations and a key member of my cabinet and national security team, carrying her work forward on all of these and other issues. I have every confidence that Susan has limitless capability to serve our country now and in the years to come, and know that I will continue to rely on her as an advisor and friend. While I deeply regret the unfair and misleading attacks on Susan Rice in recent weeks, her decision demonstrates the strength of her character, and an admirable commitment to rise above the politics of the moment to put our national interests first. The American people can be proud to have a public servant of her caliber and character representing our country.”

10 things you need to know today: December 3, 2012

Fiscal cliff talks hit a wall, the U.N. chief warns Israel over settlement plans, and more in our roundup of the stories that are making news and driving opinion

1. FISCAL CLIFF NEGOTIATIONS HIT A WALL
At the start of the final month before the nation reaches the fiscal cliff, Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked over the question of whether to raise taxes on the rich. Both sides were confrontational on Sunday political talk shows. House Speaker John Boehner said Republicans had offered a way to reach a compromise to reduce the deficit and avoid damaging automatic tax hikes and spending cuts at year’s end — raising revenue by eliminating deductions that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthy. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner rejected that idea, saying that the GOP has to accept a deal that makes the wealthy pay higher tax rates. “There’s no path to an agreement that does not involve Republicans acknowledging that rates have to go up on the wealthiest Americans,” Geithner said on NBC’sMeet the Press. 2. SYRIA MOVES CHEMICAL WEAPONS
The U.S. and several allies renewed their warnings that the Syrian government would be “held accountable” if it uses chemical weapons against rebel fighters, after intelligence sources said the Syrian military had moved some of the country’s stockpile of the weapons in recent days. A U.S. official said “the activity we are seeing suggests some potential chemical weapon preparation.” The news prompted emergency communications over the weekend among the Western allies, who have been developing a plan to seize Syria’s chemical weapons, if necessary. The Pentagon says such an operation would require more than 75,000 troops. [New York Times]

3. U.N. CHIEF WARNS ISRAEL OVER SETTLEMENT PLANS
Israel is facing a diplomatic push-back over its recently announced settlement plans on strategically sensitive occupied land near East Jerusalem. On Monday, the British government warned that Israel should expect a “strong reaction” if it goes ahead with building 3,000 settlement units in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. At the United Nations, where the General Assembly last week upgraded the Palestinians’ status from “entity” to “non-member observer state,” Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said such a move would be “an almost fatal blow” to peace talks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was the Palestinians who had set back the cause of peace by asking for U.N. recognition, instead of establishing a Palestinian state through negotiations, as previously agreed. 4. JAPAN ON ALERT FOR NORTH KOREA LAUNCH
Japanese officials said Monday that they were deploying a surface-to-air missile defense system and putting the country’s armed forces on alert to prepare for North Korea’s planned missile launch this month. A navy ship carrying Patriot Advanced Capability-3 ballistic missiles is headed for Japan’s southern Okinawa island chain. A defense ministry spokesman also said “our ground, marine, and air forces are now preparing to deploy troops in Okinawa,” which the rocket could fly over. [AFP]

5. CHINA REBOUND LIFTS STOCKS
Stock markets around the world got a lift early Monday after the release of a report suggesting that Chinese manufacturing activity is recovering. The state-sanctioned survey by the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, which looks at orders, employment, actual production, and other indicators, provided welcome good news for a world economy weighed down by Europe’s debt crisis. The data was expected to buoy U.S. stocks, too, even though they’re under pressure as investors fret about the looming fiscal cliff. [Associated Press]

6. CONFESSED SERIAL KILLER FOUND DEAD IN JAIL
A confessed serial killer was found dead in his jail cell in Alaska on Sunday. The man, Israel Keyes, was awaiting trial for the kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, a barista who disappeared from an Anchorage espresso stand in February. Keyes was arrested in Texas after trying to use a debit card linked to Koenig. Keyes confessed to killing her, and his statements helped investigators find her body in an iced-over lake. Keyes also reportedly admitted killing a Vermont couple, Bill and Lorraine Currier, in 2011, as well as up to five other people he didn’t name. [Reuters]

7. JAPAN INSPECTS TUNNELS AFTER COLLAPSE
The Japanese government ordered emergency inspections of highway tunnels across the country following the collapse of a tunnel 50 miles from Tokyo on Sunday. At least nine people were killed after concrete panels collapsed — possibly due to the loosening of metal rods securing the panels. The cave-in triggered a fire and trapped motorists inside. [BBC]

8. COAST GUARDSMAN KILLED IN CLASH WITH SMUGGLERS
A U.S. Coast Guard chief petty officer, Terrell Horne III, was killed Sunday when suspected smugglers rammed his boat. Horne was second-in-command on an 87-foot patrol cutter, theHalibut, based in Marina del Rey, Calif. He boarded a smaller rigid-hulled inflatable boat dispatched to check out a suspicious, open-hulled vessel operating without lights in the middle of the night. As the Coast Guardsmen approached the open, “panga”-style boat — “the choice of smugglers operating off the coast of California,” a Coast Guard spokesman said — the vessel rammed the inflatable boat, throwing Horne into the water with a traumatic head injury. 9. CHIEFS WIN A DAY AFTER BELCHER MURDER-SUICIDE
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, a day after police say Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself in front of the team’s head coach and general manager. Coach Romeo Crennel said he consulted with the Chiefs’ co-captains before deciding to go ahead with the game. The Chiefs snapped an eight-game losing streak with the 27-21 victory. “It was tough,” said Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn, who threw two touchdown passes. A friend of Belcher’s told Deadspin that the linebacker was “dazed” and suffered short-term memory loss after taking several hits to the head in his final game. [Associated Press]

10. KENNEDY CENTER AWARDS: FROM BALLET TO ZEPPELIN
A diverse line-up of seven entertainers received Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, in a gala affair that was part showbiz award event, part black-tie fundraiser, and part hall-of-fame-style ceremony. The recipients at the 35th annual event included late-night icon David Letterman, actor Dustin Hoffman, ballet dancer Natalia Makarova, blues great Buddy Guy, and Led Zeppelin rockers Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones. President Obama, who attended with First Lady Michelle Obama, said such an unlikely group “had no business being on the same stage together,” adding that his speechwriters had a hard time writing a smooth transition from “ballet to Led Zeppelin.” [Washington Post]

Thom Hartmann: Why the UN is sending election observers to the US

No one in the mainstream media has taken an in-depth look at the reason for voter ID laws across the country.

H/t: Democratic Underground

Hilary Shelton, NAACP Washington Bureau, joins Thom Hartmann. Now thanks to the nationwide efforts by Conservatives to keep Democratic voters away from the polls and rig the election for Mitt Romney – foreign election observers will be on hand to make sure that the voting rights of minorities in America are protected come election day.

More than 44 observers with the UN-affiliated Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will be deployed at polling stations around the nation to monitor the election and potential disputes at polling stations.

These observers were asked for by civil rights groups in the United States who’ve raised concerns over systematic efforts to restrict the votes of minorities ahead of the election – including Voter Suppression ID laws.

Texas Judge: An Obama-Led United Nations Invasion Of Lubbock, Texas Is Only The ‘Worst Case Scenario’

Still sorting out the crazies.   Yet another case of Obama Derangement Syndrome

Think Progress

Earlier today, ThinkProgress reported that Texas Judge Tom Head told a local television station that President Obama would turn over American “sovereignty” to the United Nations if reelected, that Obama’s actions would potentially trigger “civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war,” and that such a conflict would culminate with “UN troops” led by President Obama invading Lubbock, Texas. We swear we are not making this up.There is video.

Today, Judge Head clarified his remarks, explaining that it is his obligation to prepare for an Obama-led United Nations invasion as Lubbock County, Texas’ Director of Emergency Management:

I’m not saying we’re going to take [newly hired law enforcement officers] and stand in front of the UN. I have to think of, as emergency management director I have to think of worst case scenario, and I used that as an example yesterday. Okay, in my opinion, the worst case scenario politically and financially right now is if Obama and the Senate Democrats stay in power. Okay, because I have some opinions what they’re doing and what they’re trying to do if they stay in power. And I have to prepare for that, okay.

Does that mean I think the UN’s going to come rolling into Lubbock? No. That probably isn’t going to happen. An F-5 tornado probably is not going to come into Lubbock. I’ve got to prepare for it, though.

It is tempting to attack Judge Head for injecting politics into the profoundly non-partisan task of emergency management. But a more important question is probably what happens if Head is right that he needs to prepare for every possible worst case scenario. Indeed, it does not appear that Judge Head has taken any steps whatsoever to prepare his county for a coming  zombie apocalypse — an emergency scenario that is exactly as likely as an Obama-led invasion of United Nations soldiers.

International Women’s Day

Wikipedia

International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year.[1] In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern EuropeRussia, and the former Soviet bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother’s Day and St Valentine’s Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

Herman Cain Speaks Of ‘The So-Called Palestinian People’

Showcasing GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain’s utter ignorance is something I enjoy doing and will continue to do until this really strange man descends from his first place position in the GOP lineup…

TPM2012

Herman Cain’s lack of foreign policy knowledge has had him in hot water before. Since he hit frontrunner status he’s been dinged for mocking “Uzbeki-beki-beki-stan” and suggesting he might free every prisoner in Guantanamo Bayin exchange for one U.S. soldier.

Earlier in the campaign, before he had frontrunner status and its resulting scrutiny, the former CEO was asked about the Israel-Palestine “right of return” issue. This is one of the red lines in mid-east diplomacy, with the Israeli stance being that the prospect of opening the door to Palestinians displaced in the 1947-48 fighting should not even be negotiated. Cain rather put his foot in it when he was quizzed about the issue on Fox News and – clearly unfamiliar with the subject – he tried to dodge it by saying, “that should be an issue for negotiation.”

Cain’s clearly been swotting up on his mid-east knowledge since then, and a recent choice of words suggests he may have been dipping into some fairly controversial sources.

Cain gave an interview to Israel Hayom that was released Friday. It’s fairly boilerplate except for the part where he addresses the Palestinians’ recent push for full UN membership:

“I think that the so-called Palestinian people have this urge for unilateral recognition because they see this president as weak.”

It’s that “so-called” that’s striking. This is still pretty controversial territory, though it did admittedly find its most notorious expression in the words of the former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. She famously said, “There is no such thing as the Palestinians.”

What she meant by that, and what Cain is tapping into, is that the notion of a Palestinian people only arose after the foundation of Israel, and that this was a convenient way of harnessing the disparate resentments of various Arab groups who had been dislodged during the tumult of 1947-48.

This is something most serious commentators tend to hold back from claiming. Around the time the statehood push chatter was reaching its peak, a National Review editorial led with the line: “There is no such thing as a Palestinian state, and the United Nations can’t conjure one into existence.” However, their contention was very different from the idea that the Palestinian identity was simply invented so the Arabs could have a convenient stick with which to beat Israel in international institutions. Their argument rested on the far more common contention that the Palestinians – riven between Hamas and Fatah-controlled territories, lacking a Weberian “monopoly on violence,” and without strong political institutions – are not yet ready to have a definite political entity that could credibly be called a “state.” But though the editorial writers denied the Palestinians the concept of statehood, they held back from denyingnationhood.

The only people willing to go that far tend to be the more hardline publications such as World Net Daily. That publication’s editor, Joseph Farah, has several articles arguing that “Palestinians are Arabs, indistinguishable from Jordanians (another recent invention), Syrians, Lebanese, Iraqis, etc.”

The statehood push is a thorny diplomatic issue, and people on both sides of the matter have some fairly nuanced positions. However, it would seem that Cain has avoided these and has moved instead to one of the furthest edges available in this debate.

Rush Limbaugh: Obama Plagiarized Me In UN Speech

Oh get real Limbaugh, you are not that important, outside of your brain-dead sychophant listeners.

The Huffington Post

Rush Limbaugh accused President Obama of plagiarizing him during his speech at the United Nations on Wednesday.

Obama’s speech drew attention mostly for his insistence that the Palestinian delegation drop its attempt to be recognized by the UN as a fully independent state. Limbaugh, though, focused on what he seemed to think was Obama’s overuse of some of his favorite aphorisms.

Apparently, Limbaugh wrote a 1988 column that contained his “35 Undeniable Truths of Life.” (The full list is a very vintage document.) One of them, he said, was uttered “verbatim” by Obama at the U.N.: “peace does not mean the absence of war.” (Technically, Obama said that “peace is more than just the absence of war.”)

“I feel like I have been plagiarized,” Limbaugh said. “…No, no! Of course he didn’t credit me.” He also accused Obama of cribbing from his 14th “undeniable truth,” “to free peoples, peace means the absence of threats and the presence of justice.”

Limbaugh said it was “almost like somebody in the regime read this and liked portions of it and lifted it for his speech.”
