Federal disaster aid for me, not for thee

In my opinion, GOP politicians see themselves as a privileged class separate from the common people.  They believe they are smarter, stronger and wiser than their counterparts in both Houses of Congress.  Most “outsiders” see them as manipulative, bullying, stupid, selfish oafs.  I, for one, see them that way.

Could that be why they’ve only won one out of the last six elections (including mid-terms.)

The Rachel Maddow Blog

The same Texas lawmakers who voted against relief money after Hurricane Sandy are looking for “all available resources” after the fertilizer plant disaster in Texas. Aid for me, not for thee? (Rachel on Facebook)

Officials are still coming to terms with the scope of the disaster in West, Texas, where a fertilizer plant exploded last week, leaving at least 14 dead. And while investigators still search for clues as to what caused the disaster, Texan lawmakers in Washington are looking for disaster aid to bolster the devastated community.

Had these same officials not opposed post-Sandy relief, their position might not seem so jarring.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz lambasted the Sandy Aid package, voting against the measure in January…. However, in Washington Thursday, Cruz said that he was “working to ensure that all available resources are marshaled to deal with the horrific loss of life and suffering that we’ve seen” after an explosion at a fertilizer plant in Texas leveled the plant and nearby houses and business. [...]

Rep. Bill Flores, who represents West, also voted against the Sandy relief package but is now requesting federal aid for the disaster in his home district. Flores said Thursday that members of Congress with whom he has been in touch have pledged assistance.

After Flores voted against the Sandy aid package, he justified his vote by saying the package was “too large” and did “more than meet the immediate needs of Sandy victims.”

In fairness, Cruz didn’t explicitly say he wants federal emergency assistance, but the right-wing senator said he’s working to get “all available resources,” which would presumably include federal aid.

I will, of course, look forward to Cruz and Flores explaining why federal emergency aid in New Jersey and New York was unwarranted, while federal emergency aid in West, Texas, is fair.

On Peter King, Republicans, Fleas…and Marco Rubio

Republican Party - The Dark Side : http://mariopiperni.com/

I’m such a fan of Mario Piperni’s work…

Mario Piperni

GoldenBoy Marco Rubio shows up in New York to fundraise and one of the state’s Reps, Republican Peter King, protests.

“Guys like Marco Rubio in Florida. All the money that your people have gotten in Florida over the years from every hurricane that came along. And this guy has the nerve to vote against money for New York and then come up here and try to raise money. You know, he can forget it.”

“I made it clear any of those people who voted and postured against money coming to New York and New Jersey and comes up here and wants to take money out of our pockets – forget it, stay home.”

A couple of thoughts on King’s little rant…

a) Consider Rubio to be another Mitt, only shorter and with a better command of Spanish. The man is a fraud who will say or do what he must to get the votes he needs in his quest to become the GOP candidate in 2016.

Marco Romney : MarcoRubio / MittRomney http://mariopiperni.com/

After leading the Republican charge on immigration reform, Rubio is now hesitating as a bipartisan agreement is within sight. Why? Because the GOP base whose support he needs, opposes any form of amnesty for undocumented workers. In effect, Rubio finds himself in the exact same position that Romney was in – trying to appear to be a rational and reasonable politician while appeasing the crazies in the party.

He’ll discover, like Romney did, that it cannot be done.

b) King is upset with Rubio for voting against Sandy funding for New York and New Jersey. Cry us a river. How the hell did King expect Republicans to act? The man is a standing member of a political party that can best be described as suffering from severe sociopathic personality disorder – manipulative,  paranoid and delusional, showing lack of empathy, remorse, guilt or shame, callous in nature with a strong tendency toward pathological lying. And King himself shows many of these traits.

  • He opposed the 2009 stimulus package.
  • He voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009.
  • He opposes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
  • He’s an Islamophobe. “There are too many mosques in this country… There are too many people sympathetic to radical Islam. We should be looking at them more carefully and finding out how we can infiltrate them.”
  • He voted for the Ryan budget that would slash social programs like Medicare and Medicaid that form the socials safety net for the aged, poor and middle class.
  • He’s voted to defund Obamacare despite the fact that it would help many of the 50 million Americans who cannot afford health care insurance.

Word of advice for Peter King. Don’t bitch about waking up with fleas when you lie down with dogs.

Bill Maher & Alexandra Pelosi: Republicans Want Spending Cuts But Can’t Name One. (VIDEO)

aarom1

Check out some of Alexandra Pelosi’s similar videos here, here and here

Liberals Unite

What we need here is the government’s help.” New Jersey Republican.

In her latest short on Real Time with Bill Maher, Alexandra Pelosi illustrates that Republicans are simply not informed. She asks them what spending cuts the government should be making after they insist cuts should be made.

Pelosi asks them about specific cuts, such as education, Medicare, Sandy relief, healthcare, veteran benefits, unemployment benefits and the list goes on. The answer to each suggested cut is “no.”

Can you guess what they want to cut? The answer they give is not surprising. They cling to an ideology. They do so against their own best interest—against your best interest.

Wake up Republicans!!! If you think for five minutes about what you want and what you think you want, you will not be so quick to scream and assume Democrats just want handouts. We don’t have to be so divided. We actually want the same things in life. When will you understand this? When it’s too late?

My question to Republicans is, why do you want to insist on something you can’t even answer yourself?

I fear Maher is accurate when he says “the people are morons, they don’t know what to tell the politicians…, they don’t know anything.”

Chris Christie Slams NRA Ad For Targeting President’s Children

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gets it right, once again…

Voice 4 America

Speaking out against an advertisement recently released by the National Rifle Association, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie slams the NRA, criticizing their use of the President’s children as an example to cite the hypocrisy in gun control elitism due to the First Family’s protection from the Secret Service.  ”I’m a father who is a public figure, who has four children and my children had no choice realistically in what I decided to do with my career and what affect that has had on their lives.”   The criticisms come as the gun control debate intensifies, drawing ire from both sides as the issues that cause gun violence are brought up to debate.

“Chris Christie will beat Obama next time”

Seen On Democratic Underground by DainBramaged:

“Uh, President Obama can’t run again so he isn’t going to be beaten by Christie” (me)

“Then Christie will win regardless.”

“How? Do you think the Democrats won’t run anyone for President in 2016?”

“He saved NJ, no one will beat him”

(Puts face in hand and wonders how people tasked with important jobs can be so ignorant) He hasn’t saved anything, NJ is a long way off from recovery, and people are pissed at how slaw it’s taking along the shore” .

“He’ll still win.”

Whatever it takes, get out and vote!

Whatever it takes, get out and vote!

Whatever it takes, get out and vote!

I’m glad I voted last week because the rain is relentless here in my little town in the suburbs of Atlanta.  I hope many of our TFC friends have done the same, but if not, whoever is your choice in this Presidential Election…please vote…

Salon

A week has passed since Hurricane Sandy struck, and the short subway ride uptown this morning almost seemed normal, except for the bigger crowds getting on at Penn Station and Times Square — commuters from outside Manhattan where wind and storm surge water damage were so much worse and all too often deadly. Overheard conversations were filled with stories of how people had coped.

I live in Greenwich Village and thought I was ready for the worst — hatches battened down with emergency food, water, batteries, flashlights, transistor radio, etc. I’ve stayed put through 9/11, blackouts, blizzards, even other hurricanes. Nonetheless, I wasn’t prepared for the electricity and heat leaving us for five nights. I thought for sure they would be back the next day. Or the next … or the next…

But we were stuck in that trendy new Manhattan neighborhood — SoPo, as in “South of Power” — and when a friend and colleague offered shelter, warmth and electricity on the upper West Side, the invitation was gratefully accepted. From that outpost (for the most part, life went on as usual once you got above 34th Street and Herald Square), we watched unfold the disaster and accompanying tragedies and acts of heroism and community.

We also watched people vote. Or try to vote, in Ohio and Florida, where lines were long and attempts to suppress the right to cast a ballot are ongoing. Or in flood-stricken New Jersey, where Gov. Chris Christie announced that people can vote via email as if they’re casting an absentee ballot from overseas — but still need to download the ballot, print, fill it out and fax or scan it back to the board of elections; a task not easy to accomplish even under the best of conditions.

Rupert Murdoch: Chris Christie Must ‘Re-Declare’ For Mitt Romney ‘Or Take Blame’

Murdoch Christie

“…take blame”?  Did Rupert Murdock inadvertently concede the election to President Obama?

The Huffington Post

Publishing titan Rupert Murdoch sent New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie what appeared to be a warning message on Friday, telling Christie to reaffirm his support for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney “or take blame for next four dire years.”

The admonition, by way of a tweet from the Murdoch’s verified Twitter account, was presumably in reference to the warm relationship Christie, a Republican, showed with President Barack Obama this week, as the two toured New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

@rupertmurdoch
Thanks Bloomberg right decision.@Now Christie, while thanking O, must re- declare for Romney, or take blame for next four dire years.

Christie has been one of Romney’s highest-profile campaign surrogates, and delivered the keynote address at August’s Republican National Convention. As recently as last week, Christie was on the campaign trail, berating Obama as an ineffective leader.

That partisan posturing seemed to disappear entirely as Hurricane Sandy bore down on the East Coast.

A number of prominent conservatives have worried that Christie’s newfound appreciation for the president could prove to be a decisive liability to Romney’s presidential campaign. Rush Limbaugh, for one, attacked Christie during his show on Wednesday as Obama’s “Greek column.”

It remains to be seen whether Christie, who has presidential ambitions of his own, will alter course in response to conservative blowback. The governor has already dismissed the suggestion that he make a new push for Romney, saying, “If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics, then you don’t know me.”
