Things go Badly for Darrell Issa When David Gregory Fails to Be a GOP Shill

Darell Issa

PoliticusUSA

Darrell Issa (R-CA) made a fool of himself on “Meet the Press” Sunday as he tried to defend his Benghazi conspiracy. David Gregory (R-TV) pushed back hard, even bringing up the GOP’s defending of security.

Issa even accused General David Petraeus of lying for the administration. As soon as Gregory would call Issa on one thing, he’d say he was investigating something else. Issa accused Tom Pickering of refusing to testify when in fact, Issa had not invited him to speak and Pickering was told that the Republican majority did not want him there. Issa ended up backtracking on that one, too, and it was super awkward when it came out that Issa never asked for him to appear. Turns out, Issa was just making inaccurate, unfounded accusations so as to falsely infuse his Benghazi hearings with nefarious dark secrets, because that is what Issa does for a living.

The worst news for Issa was that Gregory refused to be his usual GOP shill, which is an alarming indication that Republicans have pushed their Benghazi conspiracy one wingnut too far.

Sunday Talk: The truth is out there

This Sunday’s Daily Kos entry is especially humorous…

Daily Kos

In this week’s episode of “GOP Theater of the Absurd,” former car thief Darrell Issa presented incontrovertible evidence that former Secretary of State/current 2016 presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton personally murdered Ambassador Ben Ghazi—or something to that effect.

Despite this revelation being hyped as a “bombshell” by Fox News et al., it wasn’treally all that shocking to anyone who’s been following the Clintons for the past few decades; after all, their body count has been well documented.

In fact, being the Machiavellian-type characters that they are, it seems likely that Bill and Hillary orchestrated Ambassador Ghazi’s murder (and the subsequent “cover-up“) in order to get President Obama impeached (as retribution for his 2008 primary victory)—but only time (and “whistleblowers“) will tell.

Be sure to tune in next week for the latest developments in this never-ending story.

Republicans Call Him a Dictator, But Obama Has Issued Fewest Executive Orders in 100 Years

obama-signs-eo

Just putting the facts out there…

PoliticusUSA

After his gun control announcement, Republicans immediately called President Obama a dictator and an imperial president, but the truth is that the president has issued the fewest executive orders of any president over the last 100 years.

Republicans immediately and predictably went off the rails as soon as the president mentioned executive action and guns. Rep. Paul Broun said, “There is a tremendous potential for a horrendous public backlash against the president if he continues the policies that he has been doing of trying to go around Congress, create law and be a dictator like he’s been doing.”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) accused the president of abusing his power,“Making matters worse is that President Obama is again abusing his power by imposing his policies via executive fiat instead of allowing them to be debated in Congress. President Obama’s frustration with our republic and the way it works doesn’t give him license to ignore the Constitution.”

Rep. Darrell Issa said, “The president’s imperial behavior and his abuse of power didn’t begin with the Second Amendment. He did it with immigration. He’s certainly done it with the Obamacare. So, once again, it’s a president exceeding his intended authority.”

A funny thing happened on the way to Obama is dictator who is taking away all of guns Republican Memeville. New York Magazine crunched the numbers of presidential executive orders and concluded that this president has issued the fewest executive orders of any president over the last 100 years. Every Republican president signed more executive orders than Barack Obama has. On an order per day basis, Obama has issued fewer EOs than every single Republican president over the past century.

This fact will not stop Republicans from claiming that President Obama is stealing their rights, but it does demonstrate how far apart perception and reality are for the right. With their comments today, Republicans demonstrated that they are more interested in name calling and scoring political points with their base than seriously discussing the root causes of gun violence.

The right is still feeding their myth of the imaginary imperial dictator Obama, and everything this president does will be viewed through their collective Obama delusion.

Geraldo Slams GOP (and Fox News?) ‘Bloodlust’ On Benghazi: ‘Life Is Not An Action Movie’

Back in the 70′s and 80′s I would never miss Geraldo Rivera’s time slot on ABC News channel 7 in New york City.  At that time, in my opinion, Geraldo was a fantastic news commentator.  After the Al Capone Vault disaster, in terms of his credibility, he went downhill from there and loss many fans.  I was one of them.

Later, he went to MSNBC and then Fox News.  His resurged popularity over his OJ Simpson coverage has kept him above water thusfar.   I don’t watch Fox News so I only get information about Rivera when he makes outrageous statements, which seem to be what the Fox News viewers like.

This time, Rivera tweeted his thoughts about Fox News’ Benghazi coverage that I can agree with…

Mediaite

Geraldo Rivera is bucking the Fox News trend on criticizing the Obama administration’s handling of the death of four Americans at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and is criticizing the criticism. Fox News has been keeping focus on the story, and some of the network’s personalities have taken to criticize the media for ignoring the story. Rivera rebutted the criticism, arguing that it is a “cruel myth” to suggest the deaths of the four Americans killed might have been prevented, and said, “Life is not an action movie.”

Rivera tweeted his thoughts out tonight. He first compared the conservative outrage over Benghazi to similar outrage churned up in the wake of the Fast & Furious ATF gunrunning scandal, saying of House Oversight Committee chairman Darrell Issa, “if [he's] in charge truth [is] not the goal.”

Rivera followed up by asking if Obama spun on the Benghazi story in order to “retain [the] Bin Laden killer mystique,” while saying that the idea the four dead Americans could have been saved is a “cruel myth.”

He concluded by telling those criticizing the Obama administration for not immediately launching a counterattack that “life is not an action movie.”

Rivera did not mention Fox News in his criticism, but the network has been very strident in demanding answers from the Obama administration on the attack. Watch a portion of Fox News’ Benghazi coverage from tonight here.

GOP Oversight Chair Admits There Is No Evidence Of White House Involvement In Fast And Furious

Well, what do you know?  Now someone has to get that message over to Speaker of the House, John Boehner.

Think Progress

Last week, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) claimed that the White House decision to invoke executive privilege to prevent the release of some documents related to the “Fast and Furious” investigation indicated some sort of admission of a White House cover-up. Today, pressed byFox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) admitted that there is absolutely no evidence to back up Boehner’s allegation:

WALLACE: Do you have any evidence that White House officials were involved in these decisions, that they knowingly misled Congress, and are involved in a cover-up?

ISSA: No, we don’t. And what we are seeking are documents that we know to exist, February 4 to December [2011] that are in fact about [murdered Border Patrol agent] Brian Terry’s murder, who knew, and why people were lying about it…

WALLACE: I want to be clear, because we’ve got to get out, no evidence that the White House is involved in the cover up?

ISSA: And I hope they don’t get involved.

Watch:

Given that Boehner was first elected to Congress in 1990, he should certainly know better than to infer that “executive privilege” has to involve White House officials. Every administration over his lengthy Congressional tenure has asserted “deliberative process privilege” and as recently as 2008, Bush administration Attorney General Michael Mukasey rejected congressional subpoenas for reports of Department of Justice interviews with the White House staff regarding the Valerie Plame Wilson identify leak investigation citing the same privilege.

Six decades of executive privilege

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder answers questions while testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill June 12, 2012 in Washington, DC. Holder faced questions from senators about the ongoing Operation Fast and Furious investigation, his decision to ordered two federal prosecutors to begin criminal investigations into a series of national security leaks to the news media and other subjects.

Darrell Issa and his oversight committee are blatantly trying to get Attorney General Eric Holder fired.

Some people are suggesting that the committee’s underlying reason for this unprecedented attack on the AG is about gun control.  There is a far-fetched conspiracy theory that Issa, et al have concocted in which many people (especially Fox news viewers) believe Holder and President Obama are underhandedly trying to take away their guns.

On the other hand, and I subscribe to this theory: Others believe that Issa et al are going after AG Holder  for…

  • Blocking voter suppression laws
  • Challenging anti-immigration laws
  • Refusing to defend the Defense of Marriage Act

This is all about making Obama look bad in an election year.  in my opinion, it’s also about them truly being upset that the Justice Department is blocking their attempts to steal the election…plain and simple.

Meanwhile President Obama had enough of the showboating and utter disrespect for the Attorney General’s office and stature.  That’s one of the reasons why he implemented executive privilege over Issa’s request for more documents (although Holder submitted 7000 documents to Issa’s committee over the last few months.) Some of the remaining  documents were too sensitive to release.

The Washington Post

Most presidents have used executive privilege for reasons similar to President Obama’s: to keep officials or documents from revealing sensitive information, often to Congress. Read related article.

“Fast & Furious” For “Dummies”

Fast Furious

Thanks to the Matthew DeLuca over at The Daily Beast, we might just get a clearer understanding of what all the hoopla is about.

We know an agent was killed during the F&F operations in 2007, but finding out how and why the agent was killed doesn’t appear to be on Darrell Issa’s agenda except to mention it a couple of times…

The Daily Beast

From the backroom of Congress to the national stage, a failed attempt to snare Mexican drug cartels is slowly becoming an election-year issue. Matthew DeLuca on what you need to know.

So…what is Operation Fast and Furious?

Fast and Furious was a “gun-walking” operation conducted by the Phoenix, Arizona branch of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (or the ATF) from 2009 and 2011. The idea was to encourage licensed Arizona gun merchants to sell firearms to known criminals, in the hope that law enforcement would be able to then trace the weapons from Arizona as they crossed the border into Mexico, slowly making their way into the hands of bloodthirsty Mexican drug cartels. Fast and Furious was part of a broader series of investigations called Project Gunrunner, all of which had the collective long-term goal of halting the flow of weapons to criminals in Mexico. Arizona gun sellers sold about 2,000 weapons to “straw” buyers, often young kids lured by a reported $100 per transaction. The ATF lost track of an estimated 1,700 of those guns.  One buyer alone is reported to have purchased 600 of the weapons. In another incident, one buyer went on a spree, snapping up 34 firearms in about three weeks.

Yikes. When did this all begin?

Project Gunrunner began in Laredo, Texas, in 2005 and was expanded in 2006. Operation Fast and Furious was operational from 2009 to 2011.

And this was the first time the feds had tried this?

No. In fact, two similar gun-walking operations, including one run out of the same Phoenix-area office that oversaw Operation Fast and Furious, were conducted under President George W. Bush. The first, Operation Wide Receiver, ran from 2006 to 2007, and tried to make use of the same chain of gun buyers, smugglers, and middle men who tossed deadly weapons up the ladder to cartel enforcers. Both Wide Receiver and the 2007 probe allowed guns to make their way across the border in a manner similar to Fast and Furious.

So what went wrong this time?

One hardly knows where to start: the history of Fast and Furious is in many ways a litany of disasters. Guns showed up where they were not supposed to be. A cache of more than 40 firearms sold through Lone Wolf Trading Company in Glendale, Arizona – an important outlet for Operation Fast and Furious – wound up in Texas in January 2010. In a separate incident, a gun runner was let off by the ATF so that he would lead them to higher-ups – a plan that was thwarted when ATF agents discovered too late that the men he led them to were already informants for the FBI. Kenneth E. Melson, then acting director of the ATF, announced in August 2011 that he was stepping down from his post as more details on Fast and Furious leaked out.

There’s more, though. What about Brian Terry?

Right. On December 14, 2010, Customs and Border Protection Agent Brian Terry and other officers were on patrol in the Arizona desert when gunfire erupted. In the firefight that ensued, Terry and the other agents took aim at the Mexican gunmen first with non-lethal weapons and then with live ammunition. Terry was killed in the fight. Afterward, two AK-47 assault rifles were recovered from the site of the encounter –and both guns had been sold as part of Operation Fast and Furious. While ATF officials at first cited an FBI ballistics report that showed that a gun sold through Fast and Furious was not the murder weapon, later reports showed that it was actually not conclusive.

Following Terry’s death, President Obama ordered the Justice Department’s inspector general to conduct an investigation of Fast and Furious.

Sounds like a mess. What did Mexico think of this?

Apparently, they had no idea. When Mario Gonzalez, brother of an influential Mexican prosecutor, was tortured and killed in 2010, Mexican and American law enforcement officials were stunned. The Mexican police, however, did not know the whole story. Central to the case were the killers’ weapons – assault rifles that had slipped across the border under the watchful but passive eye of American border agents. The Mexican attorney general has said that even while Americans were allowing guns to come into her country, she only heard about the program after it hit the press. “At no time did we know or were we made aware that there might have been arms trafficking permitted,” Marisela Morales said in an interview. “In no way would we have allowed it, because it is an attack on the safety of Mexicans.”

2008: Darrell Issa Voted “YES” to Fund Project Gunrunner & Merida Initiative

I’m a day late on this information but it’s worth posting anyway.  Good work Daily Kos…

Daily Kos

The Merida Initiative is the, and was the, basis for the 2008 HR-6028 Bill whichspecifically funded “Project Gunrunner.”

Darrell Issa pretends he has never heard of Project Gunrunner, yet in 2008 he specifically voted to fund Project Gunrunner.

Apparently, there is more than just a huge connection between Merida Initiative andProject Gunrunner whereby Project Gunrunner funding, per HR-6028, is directly enveloped into the Merida Initiative.

In October 2007, President Bush and Mexico’s President Calderon announced the Mérida Initiative, is a Billions of dollar aid package to support President Calderón’s war on drugs by, among other things, sending military grade weapons and helicopters to Mexico.  Project Gunrunner was Legislated into the Merida Initiative through HR-6028 in 2008.  After ample Congressional debate on conditionality and appropriations, the US Congress approved the initiative in HR-6028 without any strings attached.

IMPORTANT FACTS:

1)  Rep. Darrell Issa voted “yes” specifically to Fund: “Project Gunrunner” in June 2008.2) In January 2008: ATF went to Congress and asked Congress to Fund Project Gunrunner for 3 years.

3)  In 2008, HR-6028 combined “Project Gunrunner” with the “Merida Initiative” also known as the “Merida Program.”

4)  The Title of the Bill HR-6028 is:
Assistance for Mexico and Central America for Anti-Drug Programs (Merida Program)

5)   A SubSection of the Bill HR-6028 is Titled: PROJECT GUNRUNNER INITIATIVE

6)  Among other things, Project Gunrunner is directly funded through Merida Initiative

7)  In 2007 the Congress held hearings on Merida Initiative

8) Merida Initiative is complicated because it is an initiative that crosses through: Homeland Security, Secretary of State, ATF, FBI & DoJ.

Merida is kind of like an octopus as Merida has many tentacles that go through many different areas of US security departments.

The notion that Darrell Issa had never heard of Project Gunrunner is bullsh!t since Issa voted ”yes” to specifically fund Project Gunrunner in 2008.

Issa calls Obama admin. ‘the most corrupt government in history’

Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA). Photo: AFP.

Kettle…meet Pot.

The Raw Story

The Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform thinks that the Obama administration is “the most corrupt in history,” and he’s not afraid to say it.

Speaking to Bloomberg on Tuesday, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) insisted that the president’s political appointees must be held accountable for their actions, citing the recent General Services Administration graft scandal and a failed solar power company, Solyndra, that the Obama administration had invested in.

“If they reported to the White House and the White House did nothing, shame on the White House,” he said. “But even if they didn’t report to the White House, we still have to say, ‘Why weren’t they doing their job of protecting the American people?’ Political appointees cost a lot of money to the taxpayers. If they’re… giving awards for bad behavior, they’ve got to go.”

He added: “But again, we’re very busy in Washington with a corrupt government, with a government that I said a year ago, because of the money, because of the TARP and stimulus funds, was going to be the most corrupt government in history, and it is proving to be that.”

In spite of Issa’s allegations, he only cited two specific scandals. According to journalist Haynes Johnson, the “most corrupt” label actually belongs to the administration of President Ronald Reagan. Plagued by dozens of scandals like selling weapons to Iran, rigging federal grants, the savings and loan crisis and other assorted political skullduggery, it all ended with 138 officials having been investigated, indicted or convicted — the most of any U.S. presidency, ever.

This video is from Bloomberg, broadcast Tuesday, April 24, 2012.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK: The GOP’s ‘Utterly Surreal’ Contraception Hearing

English: Congressman Darrell Issa's Official 1...

Think Progress

The House Committee On Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing yesterday on the Obama administration’s now-revised ruling that all employers must cover contraception in their employee health insurance policies, including some religiously-affiliated ones.

The hearing succeeding in becoming one of the more bizarre and obtuse displays in recent political theater. Highlights included:

– Committee Chairman Darrell Issa’s (R-CA) use of self-aggrandizing posters of Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Mahatma Gandhi.

– The committee’s failure to include even one woman as a witness in their first panel.

– The ominous insistence that an honest disagreement over a health policy that’s already followed without complaint in multiple states and enjoys wide-spread support is a threat to fundamental American principles and liberties.

– A long and rambling speech comparing a fictional “national pork mandate” to important women’s health drugs.

ThinkProgress has the video round-up:
