The Week

1. ROGER EBERT DIES
Legendary film critic Roger Ebert died Thursday at age 70, after a long battle with cancer. Ebert was considered the nation’s most influential film critic, after reviewing films in the Chicago Sun-Times for 46 years and on TV for 31 years. He passionately celebrated movies he admired, and, with an observant eye and sharp wit, tore down those he found lacking. “No good film is too long,” he once wrote. “No bad movie is short enough.” In 2006, Ebert, fighting cancers of the thyroid and salivary glands, lost part of his lower jaw and the ability to speak, but he continued writing and stayed in the public eye, chronicling his illness and winning new admirers. 2. OBAMA PLANS TO OFFER COMPROMISE IN HIS BUDGET
President Obama is preparing to unveil an annual budget proposal next week that includes politically risky cuts to Social Security and Medicare, administration officials say. House Republicans have dismissed Obama’s past budgets as spending wish lists, but this time around he’s including the compromise offer on entitlement program cuts that he made to House Speaker John Boehner before their negotiations broke down late last year. Administration officials say Obama is showing that he’s willing to meet Republicans half way to get a long-term budget reduction deal, although his plan also calls for higher taxes on the wealthy that most Republicans still oppose. 3. NORTH KOREA’S LATEST MILITARY MOVES STOKE ANXIETY IN SOUTH KOREA
South Korean media said Friday that North Korea had stepped up its threatening military posturing by hiding two mobile missiles on its east coast, where they could theoretically fire at Japan or U.S. bases in the Pacific. The increasingly ominous war threats from Pyongyang, coming after joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises, sent South Korean stocks falling on Friday, as jittery foreign investors sold off holdings. South Korean economic officials held an emergency meeting to come up with a plan in case the conflict destabilizes the country’s markets. [Reuters]

4. CHINA SLAUGHTERS BIRDS AS FLU DEATHS RISE
Chinese authorities slaughtered more than 20,000 birds at a Shanghai poultry market on Friday in an increasingly aggressive effort to contain an outbreak of a new strain of bird flu. The market, where the H7N9 virus was detected in pigeons, was shut down, and other Shanghai live poultry markets will be closed starting Saturday. The death toll from the virus rose to six, with 14 cases overall, up from 10 a day earlier. The outbreak is sparking concern abroad, but Chinese officials say patients diagnosed early can be cured with the flu drug Tamiflu. [Reuters]

5. OBAMA COMMENT RENEWS BOYS-CLUB TALK
President Obama faced renewed questions about whether his administration is too influenced by men after he praised California Attorney General Kamala Harris at a fundraiser by saying she’s brilliant, tough, dedicated — and, “by far, the best looking attorney general in the country.” The remarks prompted opposing responses on social media, with some commenters appalled and others dismissing the criticism as undeserved. Shortly before the furor, Valerie Jarrett, one of Obama’s most influential advisers, said: “When people say it’s a boys club, it’s a little insulting to the women who are actually playing very critical roles.” [Washington Post]

6. DOCTOR WARNED HOLMES WAS DANGEROUS BEFORE AURORA MASSACRE
A psychiatrist who treated James Holmes warned police that he had confessed homicidal thoughts and was a danger to the public — 38 days before the July attack that left 12 people dead and 58 injured in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater. The psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton, also told an officer that Holmes, now on trial for the shooting rampage, had stopped seeing her and was sending her threatening text messages and e-mails, according to search-warrant affidavits made public this week. The documents indicate that the police officer deactivated Holmes’ key-card access to secure areas of University of Colorado medical campus, where he had studied. [Denver Post]

7. MISSING CALIFORNIA HIKERS FOUND
Rescuers found two teenage hikers who had been lost since Sunday in Southern California’s Cleveland National Forest. A search team found Kyndall Jack clinging to a rock outcropping on a nearly vertical slope, severely dehydrated and drifting in an out of consciousness. “She wouldn’t have made it much longer,” said sheriff’s Deputy Jim Moss, a paramedic who was dropped to her by helicopter to airlift her out. “She’s really lucky.” Jack was found hours after her companion, 19-year-old Nicolas Cendoya, was found 500 feet from a gravel road. The pair got separated shortly after calling 911 on Sunday before their cell phone died. [Associated Press]

8. DEADLY BUILDING COLLAPSE NEAR MUMBAI
At least 41 people were killed in India when a building under construction near Mumbai collapsed on Thursday night. The dead included construction workers as well as women and children — work crews often live with the families in shacks at construction sites. Rescuers were still pulling survivors from the wreckage early Friday. The collapsed structure was being built on protected forest land, highlighting India’s problem with illegal, shoddy construction in fast-growing areas. “Because these buildings come up so quickly,” a local official said, “the quality is always very bad.” [New York Times]

9. COP, SUSPECT KILLED IN POLICE BUILDING
An Alabama detective and a murder suspect he was interviewing were killed on Thursday inside the Jackson, Miss., police headquarters. Officers outside the room heard gunshots and rushed in. Both men — Det. Eric Smith, a tall, fit veteran homicide detective, and the 23-year-old murder suspect, Jeremy Powell — were dead. Both had been shot several times. Police did not immediately say how they believed the tragedy happened. [ABC News]

10. FUKUSHIMA NUKE PLANT COOLING SYSTEM FAILS
The cooling system for a storage pool for spent fuel at Japan’s tsunami-damaged Fukushima nuclear plant failed on Friday. It was the second such incident in a month at the shuttered plant, which suffered multiple meltdowns after the March 2011 tsunami knocked out the primary and backup power systems for all cooling systems, including those for the reactors themselves. The outage didn’t pose any immediate danger — the cooling pools can be turned off for two weeks before temperatures reach dangerous levels. But the incidents stoked fears about the safety of nuclear power that have risen in Japan since the disaster. [CBS News]

Walsh Gets Pro-Family Award Despite Child Support Allegations

Not only is this ironic, it’s the height of absurdity.  This epitomizes how the ultra-right wing of the GOP is absolutely out of their minds.

TPMMuckraker

Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL), whose ex-wife says he owes $117,437 in back child support, was honored by the Family Research Council Action on Thursday for his “unwavering support of the family,” the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

“We thank Cong. Walsh who has voted consistently to defend faith, family and freedom,” FRCA President Tony Perkins said. “Cong. Walsh and other ‘True Blue Members’ have voted to repeal Obamacare, de-fund Planned Parenthood, end government funding for abortion within the health care law, uphold the Defense of Marriage Act, and continue support for school choice. I applaud their commitment to uphold the institutions of marriage and family.”

“I am proud and honored to be recognized by the Family Research Council as the only member from Illinois with a 100 percent pro-family voting record,” Walsh said in a statement. “Defending American values have always been one of my top priorities, and this reward reaffirms my dedication to that fight.”

Walsh claims he had a “verbal” agreement with his ex-wife not to pay the money because, according to his attorney, “Joe and his former wife were both tired of court appearances and the resulting emotional and financial impact on the family. Neither party had the financial or emotional wherewithal to continue the battle.”

Judge Orders Joe Walsh To Prove He Doesn’t Owe Back Child-Support

This guy is a clown.  He actually asked for sanctions against his ex-wife for not providing them with her salary records, bank statements and tax returns.  It all seems like a typical smoke and mirrors game to take the spotlight off of Joe Walsh.  However, in a Cook County court, a judge ordered Walsh to prove that he is not a “deadbeat dad” and prove that he doesn’t owe $100,000 in back child support.

Get the popcorn ready, Mr. I wanna be in front of the camera 24/7s has some splainin’ to do.

The Huffington Post

After months of dismissing allegations that he owed his ex-wife more than $100,000 in back child support, U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh was ordered Wednesday to provide the court with proof that he isn’t a deadbeat dad.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Cook County Circuit Judge Raul Vega expressed frustration when the Illinois Republican and Tea Party favorite did not appear in court along with his ex-wife, Laura Walsh.

From the Sun-Times:

Walsh’s new attorney, Janet Boyle, asked Vega “for what purpose” he wanted the congressman in court.Vega gave her a puzzled look.

To which Boyle responded: “Mr. Walsh is a U.S. congressman.”

“Well, he’s no different than anyone else,” the judge said.

The judge then issued a “rule to show cause,” asking that Walsh provide proof that he made the child support payments–or risk being held in contempt for falling behind.

Tea party Rep. Joe Walsh wants ex-wife sanctioned in child support case

This guy probably thinks he is so important that even negative news like this is good because it’s publicity.

It seems like Walsh and his attorneys are getting back at the ex-Mrs. Walsh for revealing that he owed over $100,000 in back child support.

The Raw Story

A tea party Republican congressman who reportedly owes over $100,000 in child support has filed a motion to have the court sanction his ex-wife.

Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) is also asking the court to force former wife Laura Walsh to pay his legal bills.

In July, court documents showed that Laura Walsh was suing the congressman for more than $117,000 in unpaid child support.

The lawsuit pointed to a $35,000 loan he personally gave to his campaign, claiming that if he had enough for that, he had enough to help support their 9-year-old child.

In a possible effort to slow down the case, lawyers for the Illinois Republican asked his ex-wife to provide extensive documentation, including records of her employment, salary, bank statements, tax returns and expense reports. After she failed to provide the documents, Walsh sought to have her sanctioned by the court.

Jack Coladarci, Laura Walsh’s attorney, told The Sun Times that the move was “harassment.”

He added that Laura Walsh was under no obligation to produce the records and that the issue should be Walsh not paying his past-due child support.

Members of Congress earn $174,000-a-year (PDF), placing them in the top five percent of salaried U.S. workers. Combined with their full health benefits, members of the House are compensated at a rate about 3.5 times higher than the average American.

MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell banned Walsh from his show in July, calling him a “deadbeat dad.”

Tea Party Rep. Joe Walsh sued for $100,000 in child support

This clown loves getting in front of the camera to put down the POTUS and tout his own Tea Party credentials.

As my friend Gilligan said over at The Regulator, Rep. Joe Walsh talks a lot about not wanting his children to be burdened by the debt accumulated over the last decade or so, but it seems he has accumulated his own debt by not supporting them for a while.   More GOP hypocrisy…

Gilligan puts it this way: (H/t: Gilli)

Joe Walsh is just another low-life deadbeat. He may not want to saddle his children with debt, but he also didn’t want to help keep a roof over their heads, food in their bellies, clothes on their backs, pay his share of their medical bills….there is nothing lower than a parent who refuses to support his/her children.

Chicago Sun~Times

Freshman U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh, a tax-bashing Tea Party champion who sharply lectures President Barack Obama and other Democrats on fiscal responsibility, owes more than $100,000 in child support to his ex-wife and three children, according to documents his ex-wife filed in their divorce case in December.

“I won’t place one more dollar of debt upon the backs of my kids and grandkids unless we structurally reform the way this town spends money!” Walsh says directly into the camera in his viral video lecturing Obama on the need to get the nation’s finances in order.

Walsh starts the video by saying, “President Obama, quit lying. Have you no shame, sir? In three short years, you’ve bankrupted this country.”

In court documents, after his ex-wife, Laura Walsh, asked a judge to suspend his driver’s license until he paid his child support, Joe Walsh asks his ex-wife’s lawyer: “Have you no decency?”

Joe Walsh’s attorney, R. Steven Polachek, called the claim of a $117,437 debt “unfounded.”

“I dispute that he owes the child support that she’s claiming or anywhere near that amount,” Polachek said. “Joe Walsh hasn’t been a big-time wage-earner politician until recently — he’s had no more problems with child support than any other average guy.”

While Laura Walsh’s attorneys say they have been awaiting a meeting with Joe Walsh’s attorney to work out a settlement, Polachek said it’s her attorneys who have been stalling.

‘No compromise’

An intense, silver-haired firebrand, Walsh, 49, has taken cable TV by storm in recent weeks, becoming the unofficial spokesman for the “No compromise” faction of the Republican majority in the U.S. House — refusing to consider any debt crisis solution that includes raising taxes on the wealthy.

Walsh admits he is not wealthy. Some of his financial problems — including losing his Evanston condo to foreclosure — were documented before his out-of-nowhere victory last fall in the 8th Congressional District in Chicago’s north and northwest suburbs.

But court documents examined this week by the Chicago Sun-Times during research for a profile on the increasingly visible congressman showed his financial issues also included a nine-year child support battle with his ex-wife.

Glenn Beck Mocks Michelle Obama At Right Nation Event In Chicago Suburb

So much for keeping the families out of his diatribes against Obama…

Right Nation 2010 came to Hoffman Estates this weekend, bringing Glenn Beck, Andrew Breitbart and about 300 anti-Beck protesters to the Chicago suburb.

Speakers at the event, which was meant to unify Tea Partiers, Republicans, Independents and other conservatives in a “massive rally for victory in November,” also took the opportunity to rip Illinois and Chicago for its history of corruption.

“Will you raise your right hand and swear you will stop sending politicians to the rest of us, until you get it right?” Beck said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Beck received a standing ovation from the Sears Center crowd when he took the stage, the Chicago Tribune reports. With his chalkboard behind him, Beck discussed many of his usual topics–Thomas Jefferson, the Constitution and God, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. He also made fun of First Lady Michelle Obama’s anti-junk food campaign:

The Sun-Times reports:

… [Beck] ridiculed first lady Michelle Obama’s campaign to get people to eat healthier snacks like apples or carrots.

“Get away from my french fries, Mrs. Obama,” Beck warned. “First politician that comes up to me with a carrot stick, I’ve got a place for it.  And it’s not in my tummy.”
