House Intel Chair on White House drone policy: “There is oversight”

I saw this very insightful report on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell yesterday.  Yet somehow, because it removes the sensationalism and hysteria found in most recent news reports, the information given in to Ms. Mitchell is grossly under reported.

Justice Departments Memo Describing Legal Case for Drone Strikes on Americans

Mike Rogers Interview on Andrea Mitchell: Video

TPM Livewire

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said Tuesday that “there is oversight” on the Obama administration’s drone strikes against U.S. citizens who are believed to be senior al-Qaeda leaders.

“I review all of the air strikes that we use under this title of the law,” he told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell. Rogers added that Americans who decide to join al-Qaeda become enemies of the U.S. “If you have someone who has joined this organization, and they may not be engaged in plot a today, but part of an organization plotting to kill Americans, and so they’ve joined the enemy. So you don’t just kill the enemy when they’re at the gate.”

Rogers insisted there is not a long list of Americans on any “kill list.” “I can candidly tell you that,” he said.

Foster Friess: I Hope Obama’s ‘Teleprompters Are Bulletproof’

Mr. Friess realized what he said and quickly stated that maybe he shouldn’t put it that way

The Huffington Post

Wealthy GOP super PAC donor Foster Friess, fresh off announcing a conversion from Rick Santorum’s corner to Mitt Romney’s, drew a little unwanted attentionWednesday when he used gun imagery to weigh in on the shifting state of the 2012 race.

“There are a lot of things that haven’t been hammered at because Rick and Mitt have been going at each other,” Friess said during an interview on Fox Business News. “Now that they have trained their barrels on President Obama, I hope his teleprompters are bulletproof.”

He quickly went on to admit that he “probably shouldn’t have said that.”

It’s not the first time Friess has created controversy during a media appearance.

In February, then a top surrogate for Santorum, Friess spoke with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell about what he described as the triviality of the contraception debate.

“This contraceptive thing, my gosh it’s such [sic] inexpensive. Back in my days, they used Bayer Aspirin for contraception. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly,” he said.

He later apologized for the failed “joke.”

As a Santorum supporter, Friess donated around $1.6 million to the pro-Santorum Red White and Blue Fund, a super PAC that spent about $7.5 million in support of the candidate.

But in the wake of Santorum’s departure from the race, Friess announced that he’d be turning his efforts toward presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

“I’m obviously going to be of help in whatever way I can,” Friess told Politico earlier this week.

ABC News later reported that the Romney campaign had reached out to him for support, but it’s unclear whether he’s been any help so far.

Earlier on Wednesday, he spoke on Fox News and made a questionable statement about Romney.

“I think he’s had reversals in his positions,” Friess said, after calling the former Massachusetts governor “decent.” “Now, it’s going to be very hard for him not to sick with those positions.”

Alice Stewart, Rick Santorum Aide, Explains Offensive Obama Gaffe

So, this is my question.  When Ms. Stewart said “radical Islamic policies”, why didn’t Andrea Mitchell correct her?  MSNBC is notorious for wanting “access” to news makers at the expense of appeasing their guests and making their hosts look impotent.

Rick Santorum’s Press Secretary, Alice Stewart said President Obama has “radical Islamic policies” which is looped three times for you to clearly hear her words:

 The Huffington Post

Santorum press secretary Alice Stewart says it was an accident when she accused Obama of “radical Islamic policies.”

Stewart appeared on MSNBC Monday for an interview with Andrea Mitchell to discuss the controversial comments Santorum made about Obama’s “phony theology” over the weekend. As she repeatedly railed against Obama’s “radical environmentalist policies,” she slipped up and said “Islamic” instead (watch at 1:25).

Mitchell writes that Stewart quickly called her to clarify that she had misspoken.

Stewart called only moments later — while the show was on the air — to say she regretted the slip of the tongue, and to please note that she had misspoken and did not realize until it was pointed out to her that she had used the word “Islamic” by mistake.

Santorum continued a religious critique of Obama on “Face the Nation” Sunday, attacking his theology and deference to “radical environmentalists.” HuffPost’s Josh Hersh reported:

“I’ve repeatedly said I don’t question the president’s faith,” Santorum told host Bob Schieffer, denying what some have said was a signal that Santorum had challenged the legitimacy of Obama’s Christianity. “I’ve repeatedly said that I believe the president’s Christian — he says he’s Christian. But I am talking about his worldview, the way he addresses problems in this country, and they’re different than most people view it in America.”
In a speech to Tea Party conservatives on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, Santorum had dismissed Obama’s politics as being based in “some phony theology.”

“It’s not about you. It’s not about your quality of life. It’s not about your jobs,” Santorum said. “It’s about some phony ideal, some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology.”

An incredulous Bob Schieffer began his interview with Santorum Sunday by asking, “What in the world were you talking about?”

“I was talking about the radical environmentalists,” Santorum said, suggesting that they believe man should protect the earth, rather than “steward its resources.” “I think that is a phony ideal. I don’t believe that’s what we’re here to do… We’re not here to serve the earth. That is not the objective, man is the objective.”

Andrea Mitchell To Komen Chief: I’m Expressing ‘Anger’ Of Many People (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell had some tough words for Susan G. Komen chief Nancy Brinker about the growing firestorm over Planned Parenthood.

Mitchell and Brinker were discussing the controversy that has erupted around Susan G. Komen’s recent decision to end its funding to Planned Parenthood. The funding supported Planned Parenthood’s ability to provide breast cancer screenings for its patients.

Shortly after the interview started, Mitchell disclosed her connection to breast cancer and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. “Let me just put out there first of all, I have have been identified, an outspoken supporter and participant in the races over the years long before I, myself, ended up being diagnosed with breast cancer.” Mitchell announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2011.

Mitchell added that she and Brinker have known each other a long time through Brinker’s role at the foundation and her time as a diplomat at the State Department. “But I come to you today, you know, expressing the anger of a lot of people,” Mitchell said. “Channeling through them, you see it on Twitter, you see it everywhere.”

Condi Rice Says Gingrich’s Anti-Obama Rhetoric Is ‘Over The Top,’ Not ‘Very Helpful’

Think Progress

Last month, Newt Gingrich joined the “not-so-subtle race-baiting” campaign against President Obama, upping the ante on his inflammatory radical right-wing rhetoric. “What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?” Gingrich asked in an interview with the National Review. “That is the most accurate, predictive model for his behavior,” he said. Today on MSNBC, host Andrea Mitchell asked Bush administration Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice — who is promoting her new memoir — to comment on Gingrich’s statement:

MITCHELL: [Gingrich is] tying to marginalize the President as a non-American as an “other.”

RICE: I know Newt Gingrich, he’s a friend but that’s over the top and I think, I don’t think very helpful.

Rice isn’t the first Bush administration official to denounce Gingrich’s rhetoric. Bush White House chief of staff Andy Card said of the same comments, “I don’t think that the statements that Newt Gingrich made are helpful. … I’m disappointed.”
