Norquist Issues Tea Party Threat In Warning To Obama

Oh, Mr. President.  Be afraid, be very afraid.  Not…

The Huffington Post

As elected officials from both sides of the partisan aisle embed themselves in fiscal cliff negotiations, Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist remains at the center of the conversation.

In a Sunday roundtable discussion on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Norquist issued a warning to President Barack Obama.

“Tea party two is going to dwarf tea party one if Obama pushes us off the cliff,” Norquist said. “Let’s not pretend who’s pushing us over the cliff.”

Thanks to his anti-tax pledge, Norquist has been a prime target since fiscal cliff discussions picked up steam in November. Democrats have gone so far as to create an online petition against Norquist.

Several Republicans, headed by Sens. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) and Lindsey Graham(R-S.C.) have broken away from Norquist’s pledge. Despite those movements,Norquist vowed last Monday that “nobody is turning on me.”

Daddy Bush Mocks Current Republican Degenerates – Hypocrisy Is A (GOP) Virtue

Addicting Info

In a recent preview of Parade’s interview with Barbara and George H. W. Bush, there was this glorious gem:

“The rigidity of those pledges is something I don’t like,” Bush said of the ‘no-tax’ pedges. “The circumstances change and you can’t be wedded to some formula by Grover Norquist. It’s — who the hell is Grover Norquist, anyway?”

It’s not every day you see liberals sharing a Bush quote without ridiculing it and/or gagging in disgust, but that’s exactly what’s happening on Facebook right now. Nobody should be thatsurprised, though, as we’ve all witnessed the absolute nightmare that the GOP has morphed into; any sign of reason or logic – even from a Bush – is bound to seem downright extraordinary in contrast. Did anyone ever think we would actually see the day when Newt My-Own-Party-Kicked-Me-Out-Of-The-Clubhouse Gingrich was a serious Republican candidate for President? The party of “family values” actually welcomed this scumbag fraud who cheated on his cancer-survivor wife with open arms! Of course, once you remember that “family values” is actually just a dog-whistle to the ‘Gawd Hates Fags’ constituency, it makes a tad more sense…

So, this quote is my gift to you, reasonable readers! Enjoy it, relish it; try not to feel too let down when you find out that GHWB actually once signed the same damned pledge in question.

Oh, one more thing, just for a laugh:

BB: He may have talked to you about things, but you never advised.
GB: Oh, yeah, we’d talk about things. He never said the “Dad, what do I do now?” kind of thing.

…of course he didn’t! We all know Cheney ‘wore the pants‘ in that administration.

Former Sen. Alan Simpson: Who is Grover Norquist a slave to?

Raw Story

Former Senator Alan Simpson (R) appeared on MSNBC’s The Last Word Wednesday, where he called for an investigation into anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist’s influence on the Republican Party.

Grover’s anti-tax pledge has been signed by 235 House Republicans and 41 Senate Republicans.

“If Grover Norquist is more powerful than the President of the United States and Congress… he should run for president,” Simpson said. “It’s time now to peel all the layers of onion off of Grover Norquist.”

“Who is he a slave to?” he added. “Somewhere that needs to come out very soon.”

Dear Democrats – I’m Divorcing You

The Democrat’s lack of will during the Bush administration was the catalyst that prompted me to leave that party and become an independent. Apparently the author this article is now feeling how I felt a few years ago.

This piece actually reminds me of An Open Letter To Conservatives

Home Brewed Theology

It’s not me, it’s you.

For years I’ve known you were spineless, afraid of your own shadows.  I’ve seen those who dare proudly wear the label of “liberal” marginalized by those of you who say you’re liberal, but govern as center-right.  I’ve seen the growing influence of corporate America pull you further and further from all those things that ‘the left’ holds dear, all in the name of campaign contributions and reelection.

Yet I’ve stood by you, hoping against hope that you’d return to your roots and actually act like liberals again.

No more.

This debt ‘deal’ is the straw that has broken this camel’s back.  This inability to fight for what we believe in, evidenced by rolling over and giving John Boehner, himself beholden to the Tea Party, 98% of what he wanted is inexcusable.

The economy is a mess, a mess created by those who now hold it hostage and demand that we shrink the size of Government to where it can be ‘dragged into the bathroom and drowned in the tub’, as Grover Norquist once said.

Senator Reid called this deal ‘compromise’.  Giving the opposition 98% of what they wanted isn’t compromise, it’s not even capitulation, it’s flat-out surrender.

You’ve surrendered to a minority of loud-mouthed know-nothings who, given half a chance, will go back on their word if not given everything they want and throw a public tantrum on par with a cranky toddler being pulled from the toy section in your local big box retailer.

Wait, What? Grover Norquist Thinks Sen. Scott Brown Looks Great In A Bathing Suit?

Grover Norquist

Image via Wikipedia

Closeted gay Republicans who allegedly hate same sex relationships by publicly putting that lifestyle down, seem to be among the largest group of politicians who spew hateful, anti-gay rhetoric.  What will those same self-loathing politicians say about the most powerful man in America?

Is Grover Norquist, the “godfather of no new taxes” hiding something from the world?

Mediaite

President of Americans for Tax Reform, Grover Norquist may have just revealed another way to win his support that might be less politically painful than having to sign his taxpayer protection pledge. All you have to do is look great in a bathing suit! During his appearance on ABC’s This Week, Norquist suggested Republicans will take back control of the Senate in 2012 because all of the open seats will either be in Red states or because Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown and his bathing suit will be running for re-election.

After insisting President Obama realized the only way he would have a chance of winning re-election is to stop over-spending, Norquist then turned his attention to the Senate:

“Republicans are going to take the Senate in 2012, if you look at the 23 Democrat seats, half of them in reddish states. And ten Republican Senate seats up, all in reasonably Republican states, with the possible exception of Massachusetts, and [Scott Brown has] got ten million dollars in the bank and looks great in a bathing suit.”

Given Brown’s history of posing for a magazine in his birthday suit, it seems as if Norquist may have Brown’s suits confused. Regardless, during this intellectual debate between Paul Krugmanand George Will, Norquist’s mention of how great he thinks Brown looks (without even the qualification of attributing such sentiment to “the voters”) was such a random observation that no one else on the roundtable even acknowledged his mentioning of it.

Therefore let this be a lesson to all Republicans, if you’re out of shape and don’t want Norquist harassing you about taxes, then either sign his pledge or hit the gym before the next beach season!

Did You Know….?

Did you know that…

…the Paul Ryan Budget which proposed overhauling Medicare had a stipulation about raising the debt limit repeatedly over 10 years!

Ryan Budget Will Require Raising Debt Ceiling – Repeatedly
Largely overlooked in the media coverage of the Republican debt ceiling hostage drama is this: those 235 House Republicans and 40 GOP Senators who supported Paul Ryan’s 2012 budget bill voted to add $6 trillion to the U.S. national debt over the next decade. And that means, as Speaker John Boehner acknowledged, Republicans now and in the future would have to increase the debt ceiling – repeatedly. ~Crooks & Liars

Yet, look at the following bold-faced lie…

During a recent briefing, Rep. Eric Cantor – apparently in all seriousness – said Republicans had already made the only concession they would make: even discussing actually raising the debt limit. Cantor went on to say, ”What I don’t think the White House understands is how difficult it is for fiscal conservatives to say they’re going to vote to pay for a debt ceiling increase.” ~Blogging Dan

…John Hagee says President Obama Is A Dictator

In an interview on the Daystar show Celebration, John Hagee of the Cornerstone Church said that President Obama is a “dictator” for his actions in Libya. Hagee, a leader in the Religious Right who is involved in organizing Texas Governor Rick Perry’s The Response prayer rally, has previously claimed that Adolf Hitler was a “hunter” sent by God to hunt Jews. “You want to talk about how absolutely insane our government is right now, we are in Libya, the President is in violation of the War Powers Act, he can only stay there 90 days at his word, we’re beyond that,” Hagee said, “Congressmen are suing him trying to get him to stop. This is the actual work, if you will, of a dictator:”   ~Right Wing Watch

…Private Investment Firms Lending To Subprime Borrowers Again

Subprime borrowers have been largely unwelcome in the lending market since the financial crisis, but it’s becoming easier for them to get a home loan.

A number of private investment firms are lending to home buyers whose credit scores do not meet the standards of banks, accordng to the Wall Street Journal. The firms are also more willing to accept alternative forms of documentation as proof of income.  ~HuffPo

Grover Norquist: The man who killed tax increases

I think it’s time to take a closer look at the man some people call the most feared man in Washington, DC.

The Week

The anti-tax activist holds no office, but wields enormous power in Washington. What are his goals

Who is Grover Norquist?

He’s a conservative activist best known as the head of Americans for Tax Reform, a taxpayer advocacy group that is opposed to any and all tax increases. A fierce partisan who once referred to bipartisanship as “date rape,” Norquist argues that taxation is inherently oppressive, and that Big Government is a burden on the American people.

“The government’s power to control one’s life derives from its power to tax,” he says in his organization’s mission statement. “We believe that power should be minimized.” He’s called for abolishing such agencies as the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Education, and the National Endowment for the Arts; he famously once said that he hoped to shrink government until he could “drown it in a bathtub.” Democrats like journalist Arianna Huffington view Norquist as “the dark wizard of the Right’s anti-tax cult.” Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich calls him “the single most effective conservative activist in the country.”

What makes him effective?

His single-minded focus on one goal—to make it impossible for politicians to raise taxes for any reason, including to balance budgets. In 1985, the Reagan administration set up Americans for Tax Reform to lobby in favor of overhauling the tax code. Reagan installed the 29-year-old Norquist, who’d served as an economist at the Chamber of Commerce, as its chairman.

To ensure that future Congresses would not reverse Reagan-era tax cuts, Norquist wrote the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, an oath made by lawmakers directly to their constituents never to support tax increases of any kind. More than 1,200 federal, state, and local Republican officeholders have signed the oath, which has become a litmus test for true conservative values. Those who violate it often face primary challenges from candidates Norquist endorses.

How powerful is that pledge?

It’s had enormous influence. In the current Congress, 235 congressmen and 41 senators have signed the pledge; only seven Republican congressmen and seven senators have not. Thanks largely to Norquist’s efforts, tax increases have become political suicide, and Americans now pay the lowest percentage of their incomes in federal taxes since 1958.

Republicans, in fact, are refusing even to consider any tax increases in their current battle with Democrats over the debt ceiling. Norquist says Republicans learned a valuable lesson when President George H.W. Bush broke the pledge and raised taxes to plug a budget deficit in 1990, and then lost to Bill Clinton.  “He gets thrown out of the office by a bum—a nobody from Arkansas,’’ Norquist says. “The message was: You can’t break the pledge.”

“We will make it so that a Democrat cannot govern as a Democrat.”

Grover Norquist

Image via Wikipedia

Grover Norquist demands that every GOP senator or congressman take the Norquist Pledge, which in essence sums up to “no new taxes.”

Some have questioned the validity of the pledge since there appears to be no opting out of the pledge without dire consequences to the politician’s career.

Lezgetreal sums it up nicely:

Furthermore, these pledges are not signed completely freely. It is made clear, either implicitly or explicitly that failure to sign and pledge and uphold it will result in the entire nation-wide power and influence of Norquist’s group or the other groups who present these pledges being used to deny the official re-election to his/her office.

Grover Norquist uses threats and intimidation to force our elected officials and candidates for office to vow to obey him, not uphold the Constitution and not do what the tens of thousands of people they serve want him/her to do. So, who is breaking the law – Norquist by setting himself up as an extra-government entity with the power to dictate government policy or the elected officials and candidates who pledge allegiance to him over allegiance to their constituents and Constitutions?

The Washington Post

How Grover Norquist hypnotized the GOP

By Gov. Deval Patrick (D-Mass)

At our 25th college reunion in 2003, Grover Norquist — the brain and able spokesman for the radical right — and I, along with other classmates who had been in public or political life, participated in a lively panel discussion about politics. During his presentation, Norquist explained why he believed that there would be a permanent Republican majority in America.

One person interrupted, as I recall, and said, “C’mon, Grover, surely one day a Democrat will win the White House.”

[...]

It is now clear that the Republican strategy is to drive America to the brink of fiscal ruin and then argue that the only way out is to cut spending for the powerless. Taxes — a dirty word thanks to Norquist’s “no new taxes” gimmick — are made to seem beyond the pale, even as the burden of paying for our society shifts disproportionately to the middle class and working poor. It is the height of fiscal folly. It is also not who we are as a country.

For nearly a decade, our federal government paid for two wars and a costly prescription drug benefit with borrowed money. Our government paid for the Bush tax cuts with borrowed money. Now, after exhausting the budget surplus left by the Clinton administration, the only spending Republicans are willing to discuss cutting is spending that helps the poor and vulnerable — meaning anything that does not touch the interests of large corporations and the very rich. Last December, Republican hard-liners held hostage benefits for people out of work in exchange for an agreement to extend the Bush tax cuts for those who make a million dollars or more a year. Last month, many of the same lawmakers rallied to protect special tax benefits for oil companies that have made record profits on high gas prices.

Meanwhile, some mom-and-pop stores and college students pay more in taxes than some of our largest corporations. Still, taxes are sin to the hard-liners, though they have difficulty demonstrating a correlation over the past decade between tax cuts and economic growth.

FMR. GOP SEN. ALAN SIMPSON CALLS REPUBLICAN REFUSAL TO RAISE REVENUE ‘ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT’

Former Republican Senator Alan Simpson has said many shocking things recently, some of them I have actually taken offense to.  However this time, I agree with him totally.

Think Progress

Former GOP Sen. Alan Simpson blasted his intransigent GOP colleagues on the hill today for failing to reach a deal on the deficit.

The expletive-prone co-chairman of President Obama’s bipartisan fiscal reform commission slammed Republicans for kowtowing to American for Tax Reform head Grover Norquist (“Republicans can’t be in thrall to him”) and pushed Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner to stand fast on the August 2 deadline.

Surveying the lay of the current fiscal land, Simpson said “We’re at 15 percent revenue, and historically it’s been closer to 20 percent.” “We’ve never had a war without a tax, and now we’ve got two,” he added. “Absolute bullshit.”
