The Top 10 Dark Money Donors — That We Know Of, Sort Of

Karl Rove

TPM Muckraker

Thanks to the folks at the Center for Responsive Politics, who have spent the past year and a half putting together the largest publicly available set of IRS data on politically active non-profits, the world of dark money got just slightly less opaque on Tuesday.

The Center’s employees manually inputted thousands of records from tax documents, including annual reports (called 990s) and applications for tax-exempt status (called 1024s), submitted to the IRS by 501(c)4 “social welfare” groups, 501(c)5 union groups, and 501(c)6 trade associations. The compiled information is now live on the Center’s website, OpenSecrets.org.

As the center points out, the biggest part of the data details grants to, from, and between politically active non-profits. While these groups don’t have to disclose their donors, they do have to report grants to other organizations. The Center found that grants to political active non-profits amount to almost $200 million so far. That number is soon expected to rise dramatically. Non-profit groups have an 11-month window following the end of their fiscal years in which to submit 990s, meaning that most 2012 filings will not be turned in until this fall.

The grant information is useful. We can’t know the individuals or corporations behind the hundreds of millions of dollars received and spent by dark money groups. But the figures show us which groups have been most active giving to politically active non-profits, getting us one layer of the onion closer to the source of millions of dark dollars.

Here are the top 10 politically active non-profits ranked by their giving to other non-profits, as compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics (The Karl Rove-linked Crossroads GPS ranks No. 3 on the list):

Fox News Gives Karl Rove’s Crossroads Groups Millions In Free Airtime

Karl Rove on Fox News Channel

It’s important to review why the Tea Party groups were petitioning the I.R.S. anyway. They (the Tea Party) were seeking approval to operate under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. This would require them to be “social welfare,” not political, operations. There are significant advantages to being a 501(c)(4). These groups don’t pay taxes; they don’t have to disclose their donors—unlike traditional political organizations, such as political-action committees. In return for the tax advantage and the secrecy, the 501(c)(4) organizations must refrain from traditional partisan political activity, like endorsing candidates.  (The New Yorker)         Ed. Though Karl Rove receives a salary from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp for his work as a Fox News Channel “political contributor,” his compensation doesn’t end there. The network frequently airs ads by his American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS political committees, as “news,” free of charge.

A review of Fox News Channel broadcasts over the past twelve months revealed that Fox News programs ran all or a significant part of Crossroads ads at least 34 times — an estimated value of more than $3.6 million in free air time. Frequently, the network’s hosts run the ads during Rove’s segments and then allow him to explain and repeat their charges.

On Monday, for example, Fox News aired a significant chunk of a new American Crossroads ad attacking former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over her handling of the attacks in Benghazi, Libya. Noting criticism the ad received from conservative columnist William Kristol, host Martha MacCullum asked Rove: “What say you?”

DEATH OF A SALESMAN

Karl Rove, American Crossroads Desperately Try To Explain How They Blew $300 Million On A Losing Campaign

No one lost as much on election night as Karl Rove.

Although he wasn’t running for office, his Crossroads organizations spent more than$300 million on Republican candidates in the 2012 election, with some of the biggest spenders in the conservative movement putting their hopes — and dollars — in the care of Rove. Combined, his groups were the largest single outside force of the 2012 election.

The results were bleak. According to the Sunlight Foundation, American Crossroads, Rove’s super PAC, saw just a 1 percent return on its investments. Crossroads GPS, the political nonprofit arm, saw a 14 percent return.

Rove remained in denial about GOP misfortunes on election night. Even after the networks had called Ohio for President Barack Obama, Rove continued to insist onFox News that Republicans could win the state.

Rove was back on Fox News Wednesday morning after his election night meltdown. He didn’t address his reaction to the Ohio call or Crossroads’ failures but instead argued that Republicans need to do a better job in reaching out to the Latino community.

“Obama kept the coalition that he had in 2008, only it was a little bit smaller,” he said. “This will be the first president reelected sent to second term with a smaller percentage of the vote than he got the first term. In fact, there are only two states — two states in the union — where he got a higher percentage of the vote this time around than he got the first time. One is Mississippi, by one quarter of 1 percent, and Hawaii by less than one fifth of 1 percent. Otherwise, he basically held together that coalition, which means if we’re going to win in the future, Republicans need to do better among Latinos and they need to do better among women — particularly single women.”

ANONYMOUS Puts Karl Rove and American Cross Roads on Notice: We Are Watching You…Do Not Attempt To Rig The Election

I was just thinking earlier today how helpless Progressive Americans would feel if Rove, et al stole the 2012 election as I believe they did in 2000 and 2004.    Then tonight I ran across the following article and video on:

Daily Kos

This will be a short diary.  I just ran across this video from Anonymous warning Karl Rove and his Crossroads group not to “rig” the election. They claim they are watching his servers. I don’t believe the election can be rigged as some do with voting machines.  I do like the idea of an independent Anonymous keeping an eye on Rove.

I must say the whole thing is interesting.   I’m just happy someone cares enough to make sure the election is above board…

Rove’s American Crossroads Shares Address, Legal Firm with GOP Operative Sproul’s Firm

Karl Rove.

I suspect that with by the sheer amount of money Karl Rove’s American Crossroads rakes in, this story will be buried quite quickly.  However huge this story is, big money will find a way to stifle it…

Truthout

Old Republican scam artists never die. They just create new shell corporations and rely on the fact that mainstream corporate media is unlikely to bother connecting any dots. So let’s connect a few, shall we?

Yesterday at Salon, Craig Unger, author ofBoss Rove: Inside Karl Rove’s Secret Kingdom of Power (a new book which tracks quite a bit of Rove’s 2004 election chicanery, including the mysterious death of Ohio’s GOP election tech guru Mike Connell, etc) wrote about Rove’s ties “to shady GOP operative Nathan Sproul”.

Sproul is the paid Mitt Romney political consultant and the man at the center of theGOP Voter Registration Fraud Scandal, who, though the RNC claimed they had fired him after fraudulent registration forms were recently discovered in some 12 Florida counties, is still at work on behalf of Republicans in 30 different states, according to the LA Times. The long history of voter registration fraud allegations against his companies since 2004 are so toxic, that Sproul says the RNC asked him to create the shell company, Strategic Allied Consulting, this past June without his name on the corporate filings in order to hide his involvement. (RNC spokesman Sean Spicer claims he’s unaware of such a request, though Sproul tells us he stands by the assertion.)

A Guide To Consumer Brands Helping Bankroll Right-Wing Attack Ads

Below, are the companies sponsoring the Right-Wing vitriol in the 2012 election season…

Think Progress

Have you eaten at White Castle recently? Or caught a movie at Regal Cinemas?

If so, you may be unwittingly helping finance right-wing attack ads.

That’s because many of the country’s most common brands are run by rich conservatives who are using their personal wealth to bankroll outside spending groups that are running attack ads smearing progressives. From Marriott Hotels to Brawny paper towels, and from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Coachella music festival, corporate executives at these organizations have given millions of dollars to groups like Mitt Romney’s Super PAC Restore Our Future.

Some corporations, like Waffle House, give direct donations to conservative attack ad groups like Karl Rove’s American Crossroads.

The following list of consumer brands either have leaders who wrote checks to outside right-wing attack ad groups or gave money directly from the corporation. Only entities that gave $25,000 or more were included in this guide.

IRS Taking Harder Look at Political ‘Charities’

IRS Taking Harder Look at Political ‘Charities’

It’s about time.  Of course the naysayers will say this is just politics as usual, but so are those so-called “charities”…

TPMMuckraker

Is the IRS starting to look into political groups set up as 501(c)4s?

A Wall Street Journal article last week reported that the agency was “taking initial steps to examine whether Crossroads GPS, a pro-Republican group affiliated with Karl Rove, and similar political entities are violating their tax-exempt status by spending too much on partisan activities.” But the IRS told TPM that the plan has been around for a while.

In an article published Wednesday, the Journal reported:

Holly Paz, a senior official in the IRS’s tax-exempt division, said Friday that the agency was working on a questionnaire to send to some of the largest of the groups. Sending such a questionnaire is considered to be the first step in an IRS investigation. The voluntary questionnaires will ask the organizations about their activities and compliance, said Ms. Paz, the IRS’s director of tax-exempt rulings and agreements, speaking at a conference of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Contacted by TPM last week, IRS spokesman Dean Patterson said in an emailed statement that Paz’s comments at the conference “are the same as what we’ve had on our web site and in our Exempt Organization work plan since February.” He pointed us to a passage on “501(c)(4), (5) and (6) self-declarers” in the agency’s 2012 Exempt Organization work plan that reads, in part:

“In FY 2012, EO will send a comprehensive questionnaire to organizations based on Form 990 filings to assess compliance in this area.”

According to Patterson, the questionnaire is not yet ready to send out.

“We have not announced when the questionnaire will be sent, and we have not announced any specific details about this beyond what’s in the work plan. Other details have not been finalized, such as who will receive the questionnaire or the size of the groups receiving the questionnaire,” he said in the statement. “We anticipate asking groups a range of questions on topics including executive compensation, member services, political activity and a number of other issues.”

THE $71 MILLION PLAN: Kochs, Rove & Casino Billionaire Team Up To Beat Dems

If these guys are looking for a repeat of the cash infused Wisconsin recall election, they need to know they have a much tougher opponent to deal with this time.  True Democracy cannot be purchased…and true Americans would not attempt to do so.

The Huffington Post

Casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson, whose net worth makes him one of the world’s richest men, is on a check-writing spree that will soon bring his total political contributions in this election cycle to at least $71 million, according to sources familiar with his spending. That money is spread across the spectrum of GOP super PACs, which are required to disclose donors, and nonprofits, which are not.

Adelson and his wife, Miriam, along with other family donations, have already reached $36 million, including $10 million to the Romney-backing super PAC Restore Our Future that was reported this week. But two GOP fundraisers familiar with his plans say that Adelson has given or pledged at least $35 million more to three conservative nonprofit groups: the Karl Rove-linked Crossroads GPS, another with ties to billionaires Charles and David Koch and a third with links to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.).

Adelson, 78, is a staunch supporter of the Israeli right and a strong foe of American unions. In recent years, Adelson has been a major financier of GOP-allied groups, but has emerged this year as the consummate super donor in the wake of 2010 court rulings that permitted corporations, unions and individuals to supply unlimited amounts of money, sometimes anonymously, to independent groups that can advocate directly for candidates.

Adelson has told friends that he might give as much as $100 million in donations this year in support of GOP candidates and conservative issues. That target now seems easily within reach and could be surpassed, say the two GOP fundraisers with ties to the casino magnate.

Karl Rove’s Super PAC “Jokes” That Commerce Secretary Bryson’s Seizure Was Drunk Driving

Conservatives are not very kind.  Where is the compassionate conservatism that they used to tout?  George W. Bush’s  administration adapted the concept as well? As I recall, Karl Rove was a part of that administration.

News Hounds

On Saturday evening, Commerce Secretary John Bryson was involved in an incident where he hit two cars in quick succession. ABC Newsreports that he was initially suspected of a hit and run, before medical professionals confirmed that he had a seizure. Think Progress notes in their report that this is his second major seizure incident in four years – the first one being when he collapsed at a meeting in 2008. However, American Crossroads, the brainchild of Fox News contributor Karl Rove, thought that it would be cute to post on Twitter that he was driving drunk. To make it even worse, a spokesman for the group explained to TPM that was it was posted as a joke. Yeah, that’s so funny I could throw up.

XroadsScreenGrab.png

Meanwhile, despite the news about Bryson’s seizure, FoxNews.com is still milking the story. A video from America’s Newsroom is currently the top featured video on FoxNews.com. Its headline blares, “US Commerce secreary cited in hit-and-run: Obama Cabinet member John Bryson cited for felony hit-and-run following two car crashes.”
