White House responds to secessionists, impeachment advocates and beer aficionados

Thank you Wonk Blog!

The Washington Post – Wonk Blog

You may have heard how the White House has rejected a petition to build a Death Star (“The administration does not support blowing up planets”). But it’s not the only fringe idea that’s prompted an official response from the administration, which promised to reply to any “We the People” petition that gathered more than 25,000 signatures. Here are a couple of choice replies:

Secession? We’ve been through this already, folks.

As President Abraham Lincoln explained in his first inaug(David James /Disney/Dreamworks)ural address in 1861, “in contemplation of universal law and of the Constitution the Union of these States is perpetual.” In the years that followed, more than 600,000 Americans died in a long and bloody civil war that vindicated the principle that the Constitution establishes a permanent union between the States. And shortly after the Civil War ended, the Supreme Court confirmed that “[t]he Constitution, in all its provisions, looks to an indestructible Union composed of indestructible States. (Response to ”Deport Everyone That Signed A Petition To Withdraw Their State From The United States Of America,” which the administration didn’t quite address in its response.)

Thanks for letting us know you want to impeach the president! No, really.

Believe it or not, petitions like the one you signed are one of the reasons we think We the People is such a valuable tool. There are few resources that do more to help us engage directly with people about the issues that matter to them — especially people who disagree with us. So let us use this opportunity to set the record straight…Here’s the important thing, though. Even though this request isn’t going to happen, we want you to walk away from this process with knowledge that we’re doing our best to listen — even to our harshest critics. (Response to “We request that Obama be impeached for the following reasons.)

Want the White House’s own beer recipe? Here you go!

To be honest, we were surprised that the beer turned out so well since none of us had brewed beer before. As far as we know the White House Honey Brown Ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds. George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine but there’s no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House…Like many home brewers who add secret ingredients to make their beer unique, all of our brews have honey that we tapped from the first ever bee-hive on the South Lawn. The honey gives the beer a rich aroma and a nice finish but it doesn’t sweeten it. (Response to “Release the recipe for the Honey Ale home brewed at the White House,” which includes the recipes at the bottom.)

You can read the rest of the White House’s responses to citizens petitions here.

GOP Oversight Chair Admits There Is No Evidence Of White House Involvement In Fast And Furious

Well, what do you know?  Now someone has to get that message over to Speaker of the House, John Boehner.

Think Progress

Last week, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) claimed that the White House decision to invoke executive privilege to prevent the release of some documents related to the “Fast and Furious” investigation indicated some sort of admission of a White House cover-up. Today, pressed byFox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) admitted that there is absolutely no evidence to back up Boehner’s allegation:

WALLACE: Do you have any evidence that White House officials were involved in these decisions, that they knowingly misled Congress, and are involved in a cover-up?

ISSA: No, we don’t. And what we are seeking are documents that we know to exist, February 4 to December [2011] that are in fact about [murdered Border Patrol agent] Brian Terry’s murder, who knew, and why people were lying about it…

WALLACE: I want to be clear, because we’ve got to get out, no evidence that the White House is involved in the cover up?

ISSA: And I hope they don’t get involved.

Watch:

Given that Boehner was first elected to Congress in 1990, he should certainly know better than to infer that “executive privilege” has to involve White House officials. Every administration over his lengthy Congressional tenure has asserted “deliberative process privilege” and as recently as 2008, Bush administration Attorney General Michael Mukasey rejected congressional subpoenas for reports of Department of Justice interviews with the White House staff regarding the Valerie Plame Wilson identify leak investigation citing the same privilege.

Obama’s Jobs Speech To Congress – Full Video

The American Jobs Act

President Obama tells a joint session of Congress that it is time to end the political circus and pass the “American Jobs Act”.

“Those of us here tonight can’t solve all of our nation’s woes. Ultimately, our recovery will be driven not by Washington, but by our businesses and our workers. But we can help. We can make a difference. There are steps we can take right now to improve people’s lives.

“I am sending this Congress a plan that you should pass right away. It’s called the American Jobs Act. There should be nothing controversial about this piece of legislation. Everything in here is the kind of proposal that’s been supported by both Democrats and Republicans — including many who sit here tonight. And everything in this bill will be paid for. Everything.

“The purpose of the American Jobs Act is simple: to put more people back to work and more money in the pockets of those who are working. It will create more jobs for construction workers, more jobs for teachers, more jobs for veterans, and more jobs for the long-term unemployed. It will provide a tax break for companies who hire new workers, and it will cut payroll taxes in half for every working American and every small business. It will provide a jolt to an economy that has stalled, and give companies confidence that if they invest and hire, there will be customers for their products and services. You should pass this jobs plan right away. “

Feud Alert! Sarah Palin, Fox News, Rapper Common And White House Ready To Brawl?

This is absurd.  The Right will do everything they can to criticize the Obamas…

Mediaite

In the great tradition of rap feuds, this one definitely is not as violent as some past conflicts, but it sure is escalating just as quickly. First Lady Michelle Obama raised some conservative eyebrows by inviting the rapper Commonto a poetry event at the White House. And that was enough to trigger a wave of outrage.

First it was the conservative website Daily Caller that recognized Common was a controversial guest to invite, “in part because his poetry includes threats to shoot police and at least one passage calling for the ‘burn[ing]‘ of then-President George W. Bush.” Then the Fox News website Fox Nation reacted with a headline labeling Common to be a “vile rapper.” And Sarah Palin weighed in too, tweeting in reaction to the Daily Caller’s story “Oh lovely, White House…”

Yet CNN commentator Roland Martin notes “not even casual hip hop fans would characterize Common as a controversial rapper.” Additionally, Common has frequently appeared on Def Poetry Jam and has acted in many mainstream films including American Gangster, Wanted and Date Night.

So far the First Lady has remained silent, but Common took to Twitter to respond to all of his new “fans.” Common responded “So apparently Sarah Palin and Fox News doesn’t like me.” He also laughed at the description of himself as “vile.” With Donald Trump’s popularity fading, might Palin now desire picking up Trump’s strange habit of feuding with celebrities?
