Paul Krugman Tells It Like It Is, Calls Debt Ceiling Negotiations ‘Hostage Taking’

krugman

I had hoped that  President Obama would considered economist, Paul Krugman for Secretary of the Treasury.  I’m certain that  Krugman’s signature is more legible than Jack Lew‘s (the POTUS’ pick for that position.)

Having said that, I must say after watching Peggy Noonan the video below and regular Sunday appearances on most of the cable and network  news shows, I’ve come to the conlusion that Peggy Noon is a right-wing ideologue that believes everything Fox News puts out there.

Addicting Info

This morning on “This Week” Paul Krugman refused to bow to the usual pundit-talk, telling fellow round table members that the GOP’s tactic on the debt ceiling is “hostage taking” and should not be allowed. Krugman defended the President’s position on the battle against complaints by columnist Peggy Noonan, who said that she thought Obama should be “sitting down and talking” to Republican Congressional leaders.

Ignoring the obvious retort – he HAS sat down with them and they won’t cooperate – Krugman told Noonan:

“This is hostage taking, this is walking into a room and saying, ‘I’ve got a bomb, give me what I want or I’ll blow up this room.’ This has never happened before and should not be allowed to happen.”

He went on to say that this is a much scarier proposition because, unlike with the so-called fiscal cliff, sequester and other GOP slash-and-burn strategies, what is at stake here is the “full faith and credit” of the U.S. and if that is damaged, we just can’t know what the result will be. Fellow panelist Al Hunt agreed with Krugman’s stance, saying that the GOP’s brinksmanship is “…not on the level, a complete fraud.”

Noonan continued to whine about Obama, though, saying that it was “unusual” that he can “never make a deal with those folks.” What Ms. Noonan is neglecting to take into account is that it is thosefolks who refuse to deal in good faith with this president, as if he hasn’t bent over backwards to try to deal with the ridiculous and selfish actions of GOP leaders. Noonan opined about the “herky-jerky, crisis cliff” way that things are happening in governance but either can’t or won’t face the facts onwhy that is happening.

An obviously annoyed Krugman replied, “This is not something you negotiate over…” Another panelist, Judy Woodruff, pointed out that the White House position is that Congress was the one that appropriated these funds – meaning the spending which the debt ceiling covers – and they should be the ones to “bite the bullet” and pay for them.

Of course, Ms. Woodruff is correct – the debt ceiling is not some kind of credit limit, it’s the way we authorize payment for debts the country has already accrued. And it has nothing to do with the “spending crisis” that Peggy Noonan is wringing her hands over. Krugman’s stance is that the GOP’s gamesmanship is “… a doomsday, this is really saying, ‘I will blow up world unless you give me what I want.’ And you don’t negotiate on that.” And he is 100% right about that. I hope that the White House stands firm on this and refuses to deal with the Republicans who would take this country’s economy hostage with no thought for anything but their own designs. That, IMO, is perilously close to treason.

Obama Democratic Convention Speech: Recovery Path Hard, Challenge ‘Can Be Met’

The Huffington Post

His re-election in doubt, President Barack Obama conceded only halting progress Thursday night toward fixing the nation’s stubborn economic woes, but vowed in a Democratic National Convention finale, “Our problems can be solved, our challenges can be met.”

“Yes, our path is harder – but it leads to a better place,” he declared in a prime-time speech to convention delegates and the nation that blended resolve about the challenges ahead with stinging criticism of Republican rival Mitt Romney’s proposals to repair the economy.

He acknowledged “my own failings” as he asked for a second term, four years after taking office as the nation’s first black president.

“Four more years,” delegates chanted over and over as the 51-year-old Obama stepped to the podium, noticeably grayer than four years ago when he was a history-making candidate for the White House.

The president’s speech was the final act of a pair of highly scripted national political conventions in as many weeks, and the opening salvo of a two-month drive toward Election Day that pits Obama against Republican rival Romney. The contest is ever tighter for the White House in a dreary season of economic struggle for millions.

Vice President Joe Biden preceded Obama at the convention podium and proclaimed, “America has turned the corner” after experiencing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Obama didn’t go that far in his own remarks, but he said firmly, “We are not going back, we are moving forward, America.”

Obama Visits Joplin, MO (Video)

After a long trip overseas, President Obama wasted no time meeting his obligation as “comforter-in-chief” visiting the people and the city of Joplin, MO after a series of devastating tornadoes hit the area last week…

Huffington Post

Face to face with the legions of homeless and the bereaved, President Barack Obama on Sunday toured the apocalyptic landscape left by Missouri’s killer tornado, consoled the community and committed the government to helping rebuild shattered lives.

Obama said survivors of the disaster in Joplin are showing the world how to come together, and he pledged that the nation, as he put it, “will be with you every step of the way.”

Obama spoke at a memorial service for victims on Sunday. He said it’s impossible to know when or why such devastation strikes. But he praised neighbors for helping each other at great risk to themselves. He said there are heroes “around us all the time.”

“This is not just your tragedy. This is a national tragedy, and that means there will be a national response,” Obama said.

Air Force One flew over a massive swath of brown as far as the eye could see – a landscape of flattened houses and stripped trees – on its approach to Joplin. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and others greeted him on the tarmac before they set out for their first stop, a walking tour of a destroyed neighborhood. A memorial service punctuated a day of remembrance one week after the disaster.

Obama arrives in Afghanistan on surprise visit

Politico

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan – President Barack Obama arrived here tonight on an unannounced visit to thank U.S. forces and meet with American officials.

Air Force One touched down at the sprawling air base at 8:35 pm local time after a 13-hour flight from Washington. Obama, dressed in a brown leather bomber jacket and dark slacks, was met by Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan and U.S. ambassador Karl Eikenberry.

Obama is expected to remain on the ground for only three hours in what had been planned as a six-hour visit. Bad weather will prevent him from leaving the base to go to Kabul, where he had been scheduled to meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Instead, Obama will talk to Karzai on a videoconference.

Obama is then scheduled to go to the base hospital, where he will visit with patients and present Purple Hearts to four of the wounded. He will then address troops — most of them from the 101st Airborne Division — after an introduction from Petraeus.

The surprise visit comes as Obama and his national security advisers are in the middle of a review of the administration’s war strategy almost a year to the day he announced a troop surge in Afghanistan in a speech at West Point. But the White House stressed that the main point of Obama’s trip is for him to thank the troops for their service, particularly during the holiday season.

Obama vetoes bill to speed foreclosures

The Senate tried to sneak this bill in without debate just before they went on vacation.  Essentially the bill was to make it easier for courts to clear foreclosures so banks could  process them at a faster pace…

CNN Money

President Obama won’t sign a bill that could have made it easier for courts to clear foreclosures, the White House said Thursday.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs called the president’s action a “pocket veto,” although there was some dispute over whether Obama can use that method of disapproving legislation.

A pocket veto is a veto that happens with Congress is out of session, but the Senate isn’t quite out of session under a bipartisan deal worked out to prevent the president from making recess appointments.

The move is not the president’s first veto. He also vetoed a spending bill at the end of 2009.

The bill would have required federal and state courts to recognize documents that were notarized in other states. Both congressional chambers approved the legislation by voice votes, a move used for noncontroversial bills. The House passed it in April, and the Senate passed it Sept. 27.

However, housing advocates and attorneys warned that the bill might have made it more difficult to challenge the quality of foreclosure records at a time when reports of improperly foreclosed homes are increasing.

“We have heard from officials around the country about the concern that they have about the possible unintended consequences of this legislation — certainly in light of what we are seeing in the mortgage processing,” said Gibbs at his daily briefing.

Obama: ‘They Talk About Me Like A Dog’

Going off script, the POTUS told his audience what he really thinks…

TPM Live Wire

The President departed from his prepared remarks in Milwaukee to address how he’s treated by the powerful interests in DC: “They talk about me like a dog. That’s not in my prepared remarks … but it’s true.”

President Obama spoke today before a union rally in Milwaukee to announce a $50 billion initiative to improve American infrastructure, and used the opportunity to paint his administration as a fighter of special interests like Wall Street bankers.

He said rebuilding the American middle class on stronger foundations, like better education, has required “taking on some powerful interests.”

“Some powerful interests who had been dominating the agenda in Washington for a very long time. And they’re not always happy with me. They talk about me like a dog,” he said, to cheers. “That’s not in my prepared remarks, but it’s true.”

“That’s why we passed financial reform. To provide new accountability and tough oversight of Wall Street,” he went on, naming Wall Street and credit card companies as two of the “powerful interests” in Washington.

We Don’t Quit, I don’t Quit!

Last night I recorded The President’s SOTU address along with MSNBC’s comments on my DVR.  Today, I finally saw the speech.

The speech, as far as an overall view, was pretty good.  In fact, VERY good.   It appears The President wanted to bring a change in tone with regard to politics in Washington, D.C.  (sigh) Good luck with that Mr. President.

The Right (GOP) feel they have a winning stratergy  with their “just say no” policies.  They are not about to backtrack now, in an election year.   However, it appeared that The President dared the GOP to join him and his party in getting America back on her feet.  It aint gonna happen, Mr. President

This is a mid-term election year and they are going to “stay the course” with their scorched earth policy of NO, regardless of the damage done by their action!  Perhaps to their detriment or perhaps to their benefit.  Whatever the outcome of this tactic by the GOP, November 2010 will reveal the folly or the wisdom of their decision.

Still, I believe most of the country understood the POTUS’ dillemma and support his efforts:

TPM:

A CBS instant poll after last night’s speech found that 83 percent of speech watchers liked President Obama’s proposals and 70 percent said Obama shares their priorities for the country, up from 57 percent before the speech. Forty-eight percent of speech watchers in a CNN poll had a very positive response to the speech while 30 percent had a somewhat positive response.

The end of the speech had me standing up and cheering!  The words were extremely powerful:

We don’t quit. I don’t quit. Let’s seize this moment, to start anew, to carry the dream forward, and to strengthen our union once more.
