Only on Fox Could Bush’s Personal Friend Become Obama’s ‘Pastor Problem’

luis-leon-obama

Shaking my head at Fox Nation (Fox News‘ online entity.)

PoliticusUSA

The right wing media has gotten so desperate to feed their Obama hate machine that they have labeled a pastor who George W. Bush considers a personal friend to be Obama’s latest ‘pastor problem.’

It has become an Easter tradition for the right to find something or someone to use to attack President Obama as anti-Christian.

With the pickings being a little slim this year, Media Matters grabbed a shot of a bizarre Fox Nation headline:

fox-nation-pastor

The pastor that Fox Nation was referring to was Reverend Luis Leon who you may also recognize from this picture:

GeorgeBush-LuisLeon

Perhaps you know him from this picture taken at George W. Bush’s second inauguration:

In 2005, The Baltimore Sun reported that Rev. Leon was very close to then President Bush, “Seated in Pew 54, the one reserved for presidents at St. John’s, the younger Bush listened to the Rev. Luis Leon speak directly to him as the rest of the congregation listened. Leon, a Cuban immigrant who has become close to the president and who has been invited to the White House for dinner, said that after the Sept. 11 attacks, ‘we lost our known world.’”

The right is so desperate to come up with something to show that our ‘Secret Muslim Kenyan’ president really hates Christians that they have zeroed in on Rev. Leon for daring to suggest that past discrimination fuels right wing religious extremism. According to the Washington Post, Rev. Leon said during Easter service (with Obama in attendance), “”It drives me crazy when the captains of the religious right are always calling us back … for blacks to be back in the back of the bus … for women to be back in the kitchen … for immigrants to be back on their side of the border.”

Right wing blogs and Fox have immediately seized on Rev. Leon’s remarks as an attack on Christianity, only it wasn’t. They have conflated Rev. Leon with Rev. Wright, but the two could be any more different.

For speaking the truth, Rev. Leon is being attacked by the right for delivering a “hateful rant” against Christians.

Anyone who observed the 2012 presidential campaign saw the religious right express intolerance towards women, African-Americans Hispanic, and gays. The only tolerance expressed by the religious right during the Republican primary was for themselves and rich white men. As rank and file Republicans selected their nominee, the teachings of Christ were MIA.

President Obama and Rev. Leon embody what I consider to be the true values of a faith that hasn’t been polluted by the politics of bigotry and hate.

What upsets the right the most is that people like Rev. Leon, President Obama, and yes, even George W. Bush (in some ways) are better Christians than they are.

Rachel Maddow Blasts Fox News For Skipping President Obama Medal Ceremony In Israel

Mediaite

On Thursday night in the Jerusalem residence of Israeli President Shimon Peres, American President Barack Obama received the Medal of Distinction, the highest honor that Israel’s government can award a civilian (and also a hunk of hardware that looks like it could be murder on the ole sciatica). As Rachel Maddow noted on Thursday night’s The Rachel Maddow Show, however, only some cable news viewers got to see that ceremony live: all of the cable news viewers who weren’t watching Fox News.

One of the most important functions that a news program can perform, and perhaps the most basic, is to inform the viewer. While technically a so-called “opinion” program, this short segment of The Rachel Maddow show was packed with information. For example, I already knew that Republican deity and former President Ronald Reagan never visited Israel, nor did George H.W. Bush, and that George W. Bush didn’t make the trip until late in his second term. However, I did not know that the Medal of Distinction/Dothraki Battle Shield was the highest honor the Israeli government can give to a civilian, or that President Obama is the only U.S. President ever to receive it. Information.

Viewers of the Maddow show who had missed news of the President’s trip would also have been informed of several events of the day, such as the heckler who interrupted President Obama’s speech to a group of students, or the weird robot snake he checked out, or clips from the speeches he gave that day.

One of the other ways that news programs inform viewers is by bringing them live video of newsworthy events, such as the first American president to be awarded the Medal of Distinction. It was the middle of the afternoon in the U.S., and both CNN and MSNBC carried the event live. As Rachel noted, though, Fox News had other business to attend:

Fox was running a commercial about how Sean Hannity thinks President Obama is strengthening Israel’s enemies. When I saw the Maddow segment, I sus[ected there might be more to the commercial (sorry, Rachel), that there might be some part at the end that sort of redeemed it, like “But they gave him a medal!!” But I checked, that was the whole thing.

I also checked the President’s schedule for Thursday, and as expected, the dinner and the award ceremony were covered by the White House traveling press pool. That means that whether or not Fox News aired the video of the first ever American president receiving Israel’s highest civilian honor, they paid for it.

Much has been made, recently, of a Pew study that compared the ratio of “opinion” to “straight news” among the three major cable networks, but it didn’t really take into account the quality of the programming. Rachel Maddow’s show, while containing heavy doses of commentary, also fulfills journalism’s duty to inform.

The study also made the assumption that “opinion” can’t also be news, an assumption belied by recent events (Robert Gibbs made news on several MSNBC opinion shows with a revelation about the drone program), and by one of the more pivotal moments in the 2012 presidential campaign. Mitt Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom made his now-infamous “Etch-a-Sketch” remark during an interview segment that Pew would have counted as “opinion.” The question was asked by comedianJohn Fugelsang.

On the flip-side, your straight news is only as good as the news you’re reporting. If you can’t get your facts straight, or you select which stories not to air based on something other than established news practices, then it doesn’t really matter how straight it is.

With Sean Hannity Getting Stomped In the Ratings Fox News Attacks Rachel Maddow

Fox News epitomizes what’s wrong today’s the Conservative movement.  If things don’t go their way (and they’re used to having things their way) they manifest their rotten philosophy of “our way or the highway”.

Whether they are right or wrong, it seems to me that most conservatives in the media and in politics act like spoiled children when the tide of approval shifts from them to their opposition.  It’s what most would call plain old sour grapes.

Remedy: Get over it!  You screwed up, now it’s time for the grown-ups to clean up your mess and take over.

PoliticusUSA

Since election day, Rachel Maddow has been beating Sean Hannity in the key demo ratings. Fox News has responded with a juvenile attack on Maddow.

There is something happening in cable news that can no longer be ignored. MSNBC is seriously challenging Fox News. Specifically, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell are regularly beating their Fox News competition in the key 25-54 demo. Last week, Maddow beat Hannity, 378,000 viewers to 352,000 in the demo.

This week Maddow handily defeated Hannity on Monday (394,000-336,000) andTuesday (388,000-285,000). Even with guest hosts filling in for Maddow on Wednesday and Thursday, Hannity was only able to eek out small wins of 55,000and 38,000 in the demo. From election day through the end of November, Maddow beat Hannity by 13%.

Hannity’s margin over Maddow in total viewers is inflated by the fact that Fox News is available in more homes than MSNBC. Bill O’Reilly’s show is the only thing keeping Fox News ahead in the primetime demo. If anything ever happens to O’Reilly, Fox News will be in deep trouble.

The biggest sign yet that Fox News knows they have a problem was how they responded to Rachel Maddow being nominated for a Grammy for her spoken word version of Drift.

Here was the headline on Fox Nation:

This behavior is nothing new for Fox News. Every since Jon Stewart started crushing them in the ratings, they have regularly and sometimes personally attackedThe Daily Show host. Among other things, Fox News has edited his appearances on their network and called Stewart a racist.

Stewart and Maddow both are the anti-Fox News. Both draw big ratings, and both are now enemies of Fox. As more younger Americans continue to rebel against information bubbles like Fox, they are seeking out alternatives that place an an emphasis on information over propaganda, and perhaps no show on Fox is as propagandistic as Hannity. On occasion during his broadcasts, Sean Hannity literally reads or quotes verbatim from Republican talking points. Maddow’s show is the exact opposite. She is fair to her guests, and is does not shy away from being tough on the Obama administration and Democrats.

If MSNBC was available in more homes, Maddow would have probably blown by Hannity in total viewers a while ago.

The Fox News style network is being rejected by more and more viewers. There may be little that Fox can actually do to stop this slide. So like the the impotent old man of cable news that they are becoming, Fox News has resorted to using juvenile attacks against younger and stronger competition that is gaining on them every day.

Fox News’ Racist Comments About Whitney Houston’s Death Are “Disappeared”

To me, those comments by Fox News readers on Whitney Houston’s death were among the most horrific racist rhetoric that I have ever seen…

Little Green Footballs – Charles Johnson

Here’s a great post at Balloon Juice by “Soonergrunt,” reacting to our post Sunday about Fox News commenters and their ugly racism: Why We Fight.

This is Why We Fight. This is the nature of the opposition. I live amongst these people here in what they proudly refer to as “the buckle of the bible belt” and I’m here to tell you that John’s post of last week was right on the money. You need to read their sites—Fox News, Free Republic, Lucianne.com, Michelle Malkin’s site, and others. See what they say to each other when they think they aren’t being watched. The palpable hatred and violent fantasies will make you sick, but you need to know what they want, and you need to keep seeing it in their own words. It’s one thing to say “we read them so you don’t have to” but it’s entirely another to make you all see that you do, in fact, need to. In a few days after this thread is dead, some conservatives will post here claiming that it’s all projection and fantasy, just like they did with John’s post last week. None of that will change a thing. If you’ve ever wondered why I dump shit all over the sorry-assed conservatrolls we have here, it’s because there is no fundamental difference between them and the people quoted above. Their world is the world that our little trolls would make, and people such as they deserve only contempt.

Lest you or anyone accuse me of nitpicking, I am specifically calling out the commenters on those sites. But I’ll note that there’s a reason that racists and bigots frequent sites like Michelle Malkin’s site (which is actually pretty ironic) and Freeperland and Fox.

If you love this country, you need to know and you need to fight for it. If you want a better future for your children, you need to know and you need to fight for it.

Well said. This is why I post these excerpts; not because I enjoy reading this ugly garbage, but because it needs to be exposed. One reason why it’s gotten so incredibly horrifying to read comments at right wing sites is because nobody holds these people accountable. In some cases, site owners are just tolerating this sickening racial hatred, but in many others they’re absolutely doing their best to incite it.

Meanwhile, I received at least a dozen tweets and emails from right wingers claiming that I had faked the post, because they couldn’t see any comments on that Fox News thread.

I know it won’t make even a tiny dent in the right’s armor of denial, but here are a couple of screenshots showing that yes … there are comments for that article. Since the Fox News site uses Javascript to display the comments, it’s possible that people who can’t see them are using incompatible browsers or some sort of extension that’s blocking them.

Oh, for Fox sake! Wingnuts disgrace Whitney Houston’s [Death] with massive N-bombing

As much as I hate the content of what I’m about to report here (via Daily Kos) this story must be exposed.  Warning, these people hate Blacks and show it in every possible way…

Daily Kos - MinistryOfTruth

I said it before, I’ll say it again, when America elected a black man as President, it broke the brains of the racist people.

Case in point, Fox News. They pander to an increasingly openly racist and bigoted base. They can’t help but be blatantly racist after 40 years of Southern Strategy social conditioning, even if it means showing zero respect to the recently deceased. Take this as a disgusting example.

<><><><><><><>

At this point, they don’t even try to hide it anymore. This is who they are. Openly racist, totally out of touch with the majority of America, and their number one policy seems to be that if you are not a dittohead just like them, then they fucking hate you.

In short, they hate you. Period. They masquerade their bullshit in the words of Jesus and the all-knowing free market, but it is transparent what motivates them. Not love for their fellow man, not love for their fellow citizen, not love for country- what motivates them is hate for the other.

You.

They fucking hate you. They want you, and everyone who speaks for you, and every institution that represents your values, whether it be Planned Parenthood or food banks or ACORN- you name it. They want it destroyed.

I just do not understand why more people do not recognize this. The Republicans have declared total war on America, and people are responding like this is politics as usual.

They have declared war on the America that doesn’t fit in with what Rush Limbaugh tells them, but more than anything they have declared war on sanity. Nothing says that this is not politics like usual the way the revolting behavior detailed above does.

And they all watch the same news channel. Consistently the least informed people in America. Consistently the most hatefully blind, willfully ignorant, easily deceived people you could find. Not everyone who watches Fox News is racist, but racists sure do feel comfortable watching Fox News.

At this point, the GOP base is just to the left of Fred Phelps and his clowns, and yet the wingnuts just don’t get it. It’s not your candidates, Mitch Daniels or Chris Christie can’t save you. It’s you, Republicans.   The problem is you.

Fox Idiocy (apologies for the redundancy)

The following quote from Left of Center accurately reflect my feelings about the willful ignorance of Fox News viewers and Limbaugh listeners…

Left of Center:

I do not understand the American right wing. I don’t understand how people who make less than $100,000 vote for policies that benefit millionaires, and I don’t know why people who are on their third marriage constantly prattle about family values.

Much of the commentary coming from the right wing is baffling because it is glaringly inaccurate. Some would say it is blatant lies. Liberal media watchdog group Media Matters is constantly kept busy fact checking and stating the errors from the right-wing noise machine.

In many cases, it is obvious that the commentary is incorrect, so I must conclude that this is done deliberately. Right-wing commentators must know they are talking nonsense, but they continue to say it because they need the great unwashed masses to believe, and act on it.

Mario Piperni

Politico ran a story a couple of days ago entitled, “Bill Clinton scorches GOP field on climate change“.  Basically, Clinton took global warming deniers to task for leading the charge in questioning the science behind global warming.  He also targeted the current crop of nominees in the GOP primary.  All of them are deniers with the exception of Huntsman and possibly Romney.  The flip-flop man is not quite sure where he stands on the issue.

Anyway, here is the takeaway line from Clinton’s speech.

“I mean, it makes us — we [the US] look like a joke, right? You can’t win the nomination of one of the major parties in the country if you admit that the scientists are right? That disqualifies you from doing it?”

Well Fox wasn’t too happy with anyone criticizing their beloved Republican candidates so Fox Nation ran the Politico story with a minor modification to the headline.

Too funny and dumb.  It’s stuff like this that makes ardent Fox viewers the biggest group of ignorant, misinformed cretins in America.

Coulter Suggests Mass Murder As A Way To “Save England From Itself”

Ann Coulter at the 2004 Republican National Co...

Image via Wikipedia

This woman is one of the craziest of the crazies.

Ann Coulter loves saying outrageous things to:  a) get attention and b) sell more books.

The problem with her plan is that yes, a few like-minded crazies will buy her trash books but the rest of the world sees her as bat-crap insane!

Media Matters

In 2001,  Ann Coulter wrote two days after the 9-11 attacks that “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.” National Review Online soon fired her. Now it looks like she’s trying to get fired from another outlet.

In her Human Events column today, Coulter writes that a “few well-place rifle rounds” would end the rioting in the United Kingdom. She then added that a “more sustained attack on the rampaging mob might save England from itself” because it would “remov[e]” more people from the welfare rolls:

A few well-placed rifle rounds, and the rioting would end in an instant. A more sustained attack on the rampaging mob might save England from itself, finally removing shaved-head, drunken parasites from the benefits rolls that Britain can’t find the will to abolish on moral or utilitarian grounds. We can be sure there’s no danger of killing off the next Winston Churchill or Edmund Burke in these crowds.

Fox Nation, of course, is highlighting Coulter’s column:

Coulter’s incitement to massacre isn’t the only thing wrong with the column. Coulter, no stranger to borderline racist commentary, also uses the riots to argue that progressive policies in the United Kingdom are debasing people with “long English ancestry and perfect Anglo features.”

In fact, Coulter begins her column by noting the race of some of the rioters: “Those of you following the barbaric rioting in Britain will not have failed to notice that a sizable proportion of the thugs are white, something not often seen in this country.”

It gets worse from there.

She later says: “With a welfare system far more advanced than the United States, the British have achieved the remarkable result of turning entire communities of ancestral British people into tattooed, drunken brutes.”

She follows that up with a story of nine-year-old Shannon Matthews, whose disappearance she blames on parental neglect. Matthews’ mother, Coulter reports, only had children to get increased welfare benefits. Coulter then writes:

The Daily Mail (London) traced the family’s proud Anglo ancestry of stable families back hundreds of years. The Nazi war machine couldn’t break the British, but the modern welfare state has.

Then, after describing the murder of 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling, Coulter writes:

Needless to say, Britain leads Europe in the proportion of single mothers and, as a consequence, also leads or co-leads the European Union in violent crime, alcohol and drug abuse, obesity and sexually transmitted diseases.

But liberal elites here and in Britain will blame anything but the welfare state they adore. They drone on about the strict British class system or the lack of jobs or the nation’s history of racism.

None of that explains the sad lives of young Shannon Matthews and Scarlett Keeling, with their long English ancestry and perfect Anglo features.

Jon Stewart’s Epic Takedown Of Fox News For Pushing Rapper Common’s W.H. ‘Controversy’

Jon Stewart is on top of his game with this one!

Mediaite

On tonight’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart took an artistic approach to dealing with Fox News’ substantial coverage of the controversy (or “controversy,” depending where you’re sitting) surrounding the White House’s inclusion of rapper and actor Common in a poetry event.

Stewart kicked things off by noting that Common is the cuddly, mainstream sort of rapper you might find in a Gap ad or hanging out with Elmo. Even FoxNews.com loves the guy! Stewart went after Fox News hosts like Sean Hannity for going after one particular verse within Common’s body of work which references a couple of cop killings and burning a “Bush.”

Stewart pointed to the hypocrisy of Fox News pundits going after Common, but not artists like Johnny Cash, who was honored by President George W. Bush and who also has penned a violent lyric or two in his day, and Ted Nugent, who has made violent remarks about Obama and Hillary Clinton, yet is considered a “friend” by Hannity. (Our own Tommy Christopher wrote about the whole “Nugent Thing” earlier today, as a matter of fact.)

And then… there’s Stewart’s rap. Nothing we could write here could adequately describe its scope and rhyminess, so watch it for yourself, via Comedy Central:

Fox News: White House Releases ‘What It Says’ Is The President’s Birth Certificate

Like I said in the previous post, this will NEVER be over for some people.  I guarantee you that the legitimacy of the long form birth certificate will come into maajor play next!

Think Progress

Earlier this morning, the White House distributed copies of President Obama’s “long form” birth certificate, an effort to quiet anyone in the delusional birther movement who claims that the President was not born in the United States. Indeed, Fox News is already doing its part to feed the birthers’ collective delusion. Immediately after the news broke that Obama’s long form birth certificate is available, Fox ran a banner headline claiming that the White House had only released “what it says” is the President’s birth certificate:

Of course, today’s birther-stoking is nothing new for Fox. As Media Matters reports, Fox has promoted the birther myth in at least 52 different segments.
