Sen. DeMint is an ardent Tea Partier and is expected to use dog whistle politics every time he’s in front of a microphone.
Think Progress
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) “jokingly” compared the teachers strike in Chicago to the unrest in the Middle East during a speech at the Values Voters summit Friday morning.
“You know, we had a lot of bad news this week,” DeMint began. “On my way over, I was reading another story about a distant place where thugs had put 400,000 children out in the streets. And then I realized that was a story about the Chicago teachers strike. But we’ve got to think of good things.”

No problem. It’s OK. Jim DeMint is also a joke.
The thugs are people who think like DeMint
I don’t feel like being civil or mature right now.
I just want to tell Jim DeMint to burn in hell.
Is that okay?
I just posted on the South Carolina Tourism site that I intend to never visit the state again after DeMint’s remarks, saying that politician’s words matter to me as a traveller.
Good for you David and welcome to The Fifth Column!
thugs what about you? Politician are the thugs maybe they should take a pay cut they have not done a thing and they want to get pay. The teachers work for the money
Mike, the point is, the Senator who made this statement is obviously out of touch with reality! No one here is calling the strikers “thugs”. Most would probably empathize with the strikers. You grossly misread the intention of the post.
When Mike said “what about you?” I thought the “you” he was referring to were the politicians like DeMint.
LTL, it appears I am the one that “grossly misread” Mike’s comment. Mike, I apologize. LTL, thanks for the heads up.
But then again, I could be wrong.
