CNN Condones Erick Erickson’s Hate Speech Against Women

I recall reading something yesterday regarding a petition against CNN’s Erik Erikson because he said something derogatory about women.  When I read about this yesterday, over that over 30,000 women had signed the petition signed…

Politicususa

If you missed it, Erick Erickson is at it again. This time, the CNN contributor tweeted, “First night of the Vagina Monologues in Charlotte going as expected” on day one of the DNC.

You might recall Erickson from his Limbaugh-esque “FemiNazi” references to women who speak their minds without his permission.

Erick was hired as part of CNN’s “balanced” approach, meaning they went to the dregs of the allegedly conservative movement (actually quite a radical anarchist movement, but that is for another day) and plucked two know-nothing rudesters out of obscurity in order to appeal to the “heartland” of America.

In response to CNN’s continued refusal to deal with Erickson’s inexcusable conduct, the Ultra Violet team started a petition calling for Erickson to be fired. According to Ultra Violet, 64,000 people signed it in under 24 hours. That’s what happens when you insult social media savvy women like Ultra Violet founders Nita Chaudhary and Shaunna Thomas, who are funded by the progressive nonprofit Citizen Engagement Lab.

Erickson’s non-apology apology read like the typical bully’s apology: “My apologies to those offended by my tweet. Wasn’t my intention.”

The welfare lie makes a furious comeback

I guess Bill Clinton telling the DNC audience and millions of viewers the truth about many governors asking the president to allow them to put together their own “Welfare to work” rules really got to Romney…

Rachel Maddow

On Tuesday, I was pleased to report the Romney/Ryan welfare lie, which falsely accuses President Obama of “gutting” existing welfare law and “dropping work requirements,” had suddenly disappeared. After weeks of constant repetition, the Republicans’ ridiculous, racially-charged attack had vanished.

Regrettably, it appears I spoke too soon. Paul Ryan, reinforcing his “Lyin’ Ryan” moniker, brought the lie back yesterday in Iowa, and a few hours later, Romney himself pushed the lie after being prompted by Fox News’ Carl Cameron.

Cameron predicted that former President Clinton would take Romney “to task” over the bogus welfare claim, and asked the Republican to preemptively “react.”

“Well, I’m not sure exactly what President Clinton will say, but there’s no question that President Obama’s decision to say that we’re going to allow waivers or excuses from work requirements in welfare was designed to shore up part of his base that may not be inclined to go out and vote in the same kind of energy and passion as they did four years ago.

“And, I think putting a measure that would take work out of welfare and waiving the work requirement in welfare is an extraordinary political move on his part, and one which I disagree with. My own view is that we should have greater work requirements with welfare, not less.”

In every possible way, Romney’s simply lying, and he’s doing so in a racially-inflammatory way. The reference to the Democratic “base” is especially ridiculous — Romney is asking voters to believe the president’s most ardent supporters want welfare checks without work requirements. How subtle.

The rest of this is just garbage, and Romney knows it. The work requirement hasn’t been waived; what the candidate is saying is the exact opposite of reality. The Republican just doesn’t give a damn — he knows he’s lying; he knows that we know he’s lying; but he’s confident just enough voters will be ignorant enough to fall for his con.

When the lie briefly disappeared, I’d hoped, naively, that the pressure surrounding a racially-charged falsehood might force Romney to shift his strategy. Alas, the reprieve was brief and Romney is back to flaunting his deception, carefully extending his middle finger in reality’s face.

Clinton: Over Last 50 Years, Two-Thirds Of Private Sector Job Growth Came Under Democratic Presidents

This is important.  Of course the GOP will never give us this information because it reveals just how interested they are in American exceptionalism.  Their sole focus seems to be on big business and big banks.

Think Progress

Former President Bill Clinton poured cold water on the Republican Party’s jobs rhetoric last night in a speech at the Democratic National Convention, telling the nation that in the 50 years since John F. Kennedy took office, the vast majority of private sector jobs have been created under Democratic administrations. In those 52 years, as Bloomberg reported in May, 42 million of the new private sector jobs were created during 24 years of Democratic presidencies versus just 24 million under Republicans.

Clinton highlighted the statistic last night as evidence that the Republican vision for the economy, which ignores that “poverty, discrimination, and ignorance restrict growth,” won’t provide the recovery the American economy needs:

CLINTON: Well, since 1961, for 52 years now, the Republicans have held the White House 28 years, the Democrats 24. In those 52 years, our private economy has produced 66 million private sector jobs. So, what’s the job score? Republicans, 24 million, Democrats, 42 (million). Now, there’s a reason for this.It turns out that advancing equal opportunity and economic empowerment is both morally right and good economics. Why? Because poverty, discrimination, and ignorance restrict growth. When you stifle human potential, when you don’t invest in new ideas, it doesn’t just cut off the people who are affected, it hurts us all.

Watch:

The GOP’s supply-side economic policies, which rely on tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy, have failed to boost economic growth for more than three decades, a point Clinton made while hammering Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s plan to push through a tax cut four times the size of George W. Bush’s. “We simply can’t afford to give the reins of government to someone who will double down on trickle down,” Clinton said.

Clinton isn’t alone in analyzing the GOP’s economic failures: in July, 40 economists looked at the Republican Party’s plans and determined that it had abandoned economic reality. During the GOP primaries, economic professors said the party’s plans couldn’t pass a basic economics class.

Huffington Post: BILL KILLS

The pundits say that Bill Clinton’s speech was about 45 minutes.  I felt like it went by way too fast.  In fact i watched it in its entirety again this morning after I got the boys off to school.  It was just as amazing to me as it was last night.

Clinton’s explanations on policy and the Obama administration and what the other side wants to do had me mesmerized and happy that we average Americans could understand every word of what he said.

No one could have achieved that, except President Bill Clinton…

The Huffington Post

Bill Clinton made the nation a big promise Wednesday night, pledging to those still struggling that their economic fortunes will turn around if they re-elect President Barack Obama.

“A lot of Americans are still angry and frustrated about this economy,” Clinton told a spellbound audience of delegates at Time Warner Cable Arena. “If you look at the numbers, you know that employment is growing, banks are beginning to lend again, and a lot of housing prices are even beginning to pick up.

“But too many people do not feel it yet,” he said, and then vowed: “If you will renew the president’s contract, you will feel it. You will feel it.”

He paused, and then added, “Folks, whether the American people believe what I just told you or not may be the whole election. I just want you to know I believe it. With all my heart I believe it.”

The rest of Clinton’s nearly hour-long speech was a detailed litigation of the main charges that Republicans have made against Obama.

But those few sentences — an acknowledgment that the nation is still stuck in an economic slump, a promise that a second Obama term will bring better times, and a quick, sly slip into analyst mode — were the key moments of the speech.

This Might Make You Cry

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have vowed to repeal Obamacare.

This means:

  • Insurance companies continuing to deny coverage because of pre-existing conditions
  • Getting rid of full coverage for preventive services like cancer screenings, flu shots and pediatrician visits
  • 3.1 million 18-26 year olds may no longer be able to stay on their parents insurance plans
  • Insurance companies will keep charging women up to 50% more than men for the same plan
  • Eliminating the ban on life-time caps for coverage

The Progress Report

Why We Fight

Progressives have spent decades fighting to make affordable health care accessible to all Americans — as a right, not a privilege. And after spending two years fighting to pass Obamacare, we’ve spent the last two years fighting off partisan political attacks in Congress and the courts while implementing benefits that are already making a difference in the lives of tens of millions of Americans. Tens of millions more will benefit by the time the law is fully implemented in two years.

All that hard work could be for nothing if Mitt Romney and Republicans win this election. Republicans in Congress have already tried to repeal Obamacare more than 30 times and Mitt Romney has promised to start repealing it on “day one” if he wins.

We know what’s at stake, but sometimes all it takes is one story to remind us why we fight so hard. Here’s one family’s story about how Obamacare is saving their daughter’s life and why they worry “every day” about what a Romney presidency would mean for them.
