Rachel Maddow revealed on her Friday show that columnist and Fox News pundit Cal Thomas had personally apologized to her after saying that she was a good argument for contraception.
Thomas called Maddow “the best argument in favor of her parents using contraception” during a panel at the annual CPAC conference in Washington on Thursday. He was immediately criticized for the comment, including from his Fox News colleague Greta Van Susteren, who called on him to apologize publicly and privately.
Maddow responded to Thomas’ comments on her Thursday show. On Friday, she told her viewers that Thomas had called her the next morning and said he was sorry.
“He didn’t mean it and he wished he hadn’t said it,” Maddow said. “I completely believe his apology. I completely accept his apology.”
She also thanked Van Susteren for coming to her defense, calling it “really nice, particularly given that she works” at Fox News with Thomas.

But, now, is he going to point out the real cause of the problem — a Fox News audience that laps stuff like that up? “Contributors” who whip up and get whipped up into hateful fury routinely?
Is he going to stop showing up on Fox, or show up to be a voice of reason?
Applying the standards about which he’s written for repentence, he has barely begun.
WK, well stated. I couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately I have a feeling his apology was simply lip service at the behest of Fox News.
Oh, absolutely.
This whole spectacle of public “apologies” sickens me. People say things deliberately to be offensive, then say they’re sorry, but then they’ll go do it again.
It all just generates buzz and keeps the news cycle talking about the news cycle. By pulling this stunt, Fox has managed to make itself the headline of other news networks. Again.
And it’s more red meat for the dittoheads.
If Cal Thomas really means his apology, then we’ll see some real changes in how he chooses his appearances. Don’t hold your breath.
WK, the “apology” that’s the phoniest of them all starts out:
“I apologize IF I OFFENDED ANYONE…”
Give me a break…IF they offended anyone? That’s what some pundits like Rachel, call a “non-apology”.
