Democratic lawmakers on Thursday called for a federal investigation into Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ failure to report hundreds of thousands of dollars on annual financial disclosure forms.
Led by House Rules Committee ranking member Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), 20 House Democrats sent a letter to the Judicial Conference of the United States — the entity that frames guidelines for the administration of federal courts — requesting that the conference refer the matter of Thomas’ non-compliance with the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 to the Department of Justice.
The letter outlines how, throughout his 20-year tenure on the Supreme Court, Thomas routinely checked a box titled “none” on his annual financial disclosure forms, indicating that his wife had received no income. But in reality, the letter states, she earned nearly $700,000 from the Heritage Foundation from 2003 to 2007 alone.
Slaughter called it “absurd” to suggest that Thomas may not have known how to fill out the forms.
“It is reasonable, in every sense of the word, to believe that a member of the highest court in the land should know how to properly disclose almost $700,000 worth of income,” Slaughter said in a statement. “To not be able to do so is suspicious, and according to law, requires further investigation. To accept Justice Thomas’s explanation without doing the required due diligence would be irresponsible.”
The letter also cites a June report in The New York Times indicating Thomas may have regularly benefited from the use of a private yacht and airplane owned by real estate magnate Harlan Crowe and failed to disclose the travel as a gift or travel reimbursement.

Calling the guy a mere creep is far too nice. To me, Clarence Thomas personifies the perversion of America’s political and judicial system over the last two decades. The 52 to 48 Senate confirmation vote was the closest in more than a century and a half now. How he managed to get confirmed amidst all the seamy revelations by Anita Hill is beyond me. To make matters worse, if I recall correctly, eleven Democrats voted for him, including Joe Biden. That Clarence Thomas became the replacement for Thurgood Marshall, an historic judicial superstar, was a dirty joke on America.
While I am all for investigating the hell out him, I can tell you here and now the only way Clarence Thomas will ever leave the Supreme Court is by ambulance after the fat in his blood stream and face that increases visibly each day causes his head to pop like an infected pimple. He’s certainly incapable of being embarrassed into leaving voluntarily. And he knows any impeachment buck stops at the Supreme Court, where his fellow phonies will protect him in the end.
It’s hard to believe he has been there for twenty years now. I said way back then he was, and would continue to be, a major disaster for America in general and African Americans in particular. Many of my friends tried to comfort me by saying he could change for the better. As it turns out, his blatant breaches of ethics show not only has Clarence Thomas not gotten better, he has become even worse.

Justice Thomas is certainly an embarrassment to the Court and the country.
The Right loves him because he demonstrates constantly that he’s not the thinker that Scalia or Roberts is (like them or not, they’re smart people), he sits there more or less quietly as they think good black folks should do, and they hope that when he is gone no one cares to see another African-American on the court.
I hope that President Bush is ashamed of appointing him.
You hit the nail on the head. Clarence Thomas reinforces all the Republicans’ favorite stereotypes about African Americans. He’s fundamentally dishonest and immoral, not particularly bright, got to where he is through affirmative action (from the Republican Party) and knows how to keep his mouth shut, defer to his White bosses and stay in his place.
That affords him a certain kind of predictability and reliability which explains why his Republican colleagues seem to be so curiously at peace sitting next to such a troubled and troubling character on the highest Court in our land.
