Arizona Elementary School Will Whiten The Faces Of Its Own Students On A Mural Because Some Racists Yelled At It [UPDATE]

It appears there has been a good resolution to this story.  Giving in to bigotry and racism is not the answer.

Huffington Post

UPDATE: Good news. The gutless, carbound racists lost, and the mural is being restored to its “original theme.” Jeff Lane, the principal of Miller Valley Elementary School, and Kevin Kapp, the school superintendent, showed up at a protest today to apologize for giving in to whims of mentally deranged adults, spewing racial epithets at a painting:

I am not a racist individual, but I will tell you depicting a black guy in the middle of that mural, based upon who’s President of the United States today and based upon the history of this community, when I grew up we had four black families – who I have been very good friends with for years – to depict the biggest picture on that building as a black person, I would have to ask the question, ‘Why?’

Yes. WHY DID SOMEONE PUT A BLACK PERSON ON A PAINTING? You “have” to “ask” the “question!”

Anyway, Steve Blair lost too, and I am delighted.

Via Ken Layne at Wonkette, this is just the worst story in the world:

An Arizona elementary school mural featuring the faces of kids who attend the school has been the subject of constant daytime drive-by racist screaming, from adults, as well as a radio talk-show campaign (by an actual city councilman, who has an AM talk-radio show) to remove the black student’s face, and now the school principal has ordered the faces of the Latino and Black students to be changed to Caucasian skin.

F’ing hell. Read the rest of the details here. And here’s Richard Lawson’s reaction, at Gawker.

What can I say about this? We are talking about a bunch of mentally deranged adults, who have terrorized an elementary school, for daring to paint a mural featuring the faces of black and Latino children — actual black and Latino children who live in Arizona. And we’re also talking about a group of adults who have decided to send a stirring message to their students and the world: when a bunch of mentally deranged adults — and we are not talking about people who are particularly threatening, this is a bunch of utterly gutless mopes, yelling racial slurs from their cars, egged on by some pinhead city councilman cowering behind a radio microphone — threaten a bunch of children, the best thing to do is to accede to their psychotic, racist “demands.”

Seriously, educators of Prescott, Arizona, when some creep demands you whiten the faces of your own students on a mural, the correct response is to say, “No, we will not be doing anything of the sort.”

This story really should be blasted, far and wide. You cable news producers need to get this story in the mix with a quickness. And let me be clear to you all: there are no “two sides to this story.” This is not something you need to have a panel discussion about. CNN, I don’t want to see you plumbing the depths of your counterintuition on your website, or lending credence to the notion that the gutless mopes in their cars, shrieking racial slurs at the images of children have an interesting point of view that we should “hear out” because of the need to be “balanced.” This is your moment to decry, condemn, and brutalize these evil people.  Blast them to hell, or go jump in the Gulf of Mexico.

I was wondering when you were going to post this story, as well as the update. A few days ago I was considering sending you an email about it, but I thought “Hey, it’s HER blog, butt out!”

I’m glad you saw fit to post it. It made me sick at first. And I am not feeling much better even though the school officials, apparently, finally grew a moral backbone. But what kind of a message did it send the poor kids to see their faces whitened only to be darkened again when the greater public cried out.

I guess there IS a message in this for us all. WE ARE THE GREATER PUBLIC AND WE NEED TO CRIE OUT!!!!!!!

    ALWAYS!

  2. LTL, the reason I didn’t post it when the story first broke was because I was sickened by the fact that they had given in to the bigots and racists. It reflected to me, what appeared to be a rising tide in hatred and racism in our country. I don’t worry for me, I’ve seen it before, but for my grandchildren who really haven’t been exposed to such vitriolic hate because of the color of their skin, I fear and want to shield them from the pain and the confusion of it all.

LTL, I report a lot about racism issues, perhaps too many for some peoples’ taste. It truly does take its toll on the heart and the psyche to see so much of what was fought for rapidly being undone and going down a sink hole of political and cultural chaos.

I’m not usually such a pessimist. In fact although I was raising babies in the 60′s and 70′s, and not involved in politics at all, I was still labeled a “militant” because of my way of thinking. I was not an MLK, Jr. pacifist nor a “black panther” radical. I was more in the middle and leaned toward the black poets and writers of those times to support my views.

In a few days I’ll be 64. I’ve mellowed considerably, because I have seen much more than I had when I was in my 20′s and 30′s. I’m more aware of how politics really work. I’ve seen it’s darkside and I’ve seen the bright side.

Thats all I’ll say for now.

  3. “All Men are created equal”! The founders had it right, when attempting to form a perfect union and they also knew that they were not there yet but knew we one day would get there. Lincoln moved us forward as did JFK and LBJ. This Nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds. It was founded on the principle that all men are created equal, and that the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.

It is my contention that this AZ law is not constitutional and will fail when challenged (unless, of course, they keep adding more amendments), pretty funny for this so called perfect law, that many internet blogs claim it was copied “Word for Word” from the Federal law, which I frankly do not believe, if it was then no amendments would have been made, right?, of course.

As for the undocumented workers, as was attributed to Ronald Reagan “It’s the Economy, Stupid”. When the economy is good we say let’s all celebrate “Cinco de Mayo, my brothers” but when the economy is down “it’s all your fault, you damn immigrant”. This too will pass. The real problem is the narcos, arms and people smuggler that’s what the focus should be on.

Don’t you find it funny that no one ever voted for Brewer for Governor, it’s all about politics and getting elected, do not be fooled. Busy Brewer has passed S.B. 1070, no permit conceal weapons law, the famous Birthers law, banning Ethic studies law, (could she be behind the Mural in Prescott, Arizona) and if history is a lesson she should look up Arizona’s House Bill 2779 from two years ago (which failed when legally challenged) and the craziest one the boycotted Martin Luther King Day, not wanting another holiday, how crazy is that. I believe there is an undercurrent to their enactment of new laws, they real love following a distinct pattern. Poor Brewer, last week, she first she said her Dad had died in Germany fighting the Nazi in World War II (war ended 1945) and we find out her father never was in Germany and died in California in 1955 (watch the spin doctors go into overdrive) and then she went to Washington and came back empty as always, poor dear.
