Obama Approval Tips Positive For First Time This Year

In spite of grave criticism over the fact that our POTUS is NOT “Superman” and cannot single-handedly stop the horrendous Gulf Coast oil spill, President Obama’s overall approval rating, not his handling of the Oil Spill, has tipped over to the “positive” side for the first time this year.

Hoffmania

Ladies and Gentlemen…the waning influence of Fox News.

American voters approve 48 – 43 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing, up from a negative 44 – 46 percent April 21, the first time since December that more voters give him a thumbs up rather than thumbs down, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released May 26, 2010.

American voters also say 42 – 36 percent that they would vote for a Democrat rather than a Republican in this year’s Congressional elections, reversing a 44 – 39 percent Republican lead March 24.

Right-Wing Freakout – Conservatives Go Crazy Over Muslim Center Near Ground Zero

Talking Points Memo

We told you earlier this month about Mark Williams, the top Tea Party leader who was so enraged by plans to build a Muslim community center near Ground Zero that he referred to the Islamic deity as a “monkey-god” and to Muslims as “the animals of Allah.”

But it turns out that Williams isn’t the only conservative driven to apoplexy by this local development project. Lately, we’ve seen a massive right-wing freakout over the plan for the community center. That freakout has been couched as concern about dishonoring the memory of 9/11 victims. But it’s been so widespread and so vitriolic as to suggest it might just have some uglier roots.

At issue is the proposed Cordoba House, a Muslim community center which would stand 15 stories tall and would be built not directly at Ground Zero, but rather at Park Place, two blocks north of where the Twin Towers stood in lower Manhattan. The center would include a prayer space, a performing arts center, a swimming pool, and other amenities. The effort is being spearheaded by a longtime local imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf, who has said the center would “bridge and heal a divide” and has said it’s his mission to fight radicalism. A local community board voted this week by 29-1 to support the project.

But in the nightmares of right-wingers, the project has been transformed into something more like a shrine to the 9/11 terrorists stuck on top of the site where victims of the attack lay buried, and pushed by a radical Islamic cleric…

• Back in December, when word about the proposal first surfaced, WorldNetDaily posted comments from outraged right-wingers, including: “If this is true, our beloved country is already gone. We no longer have the America I know and love.”

The Washington Times editorialized today that the proposal is “at best inappropriate, and at worst an attempt to hijack the memory of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.” The piece was approvingly tweeted this morning by Keep America Safe, Liz Cheney’s group.

Investor’s Business Daily judged that the plan is “a monumental sign of weakness. Right now, our enemy is laughing at us.”

• Right-wing radio host Michael Berry exclaimed: “If you do build a mosque, I hope somebody blows it up… I hope the mosque isn’t built, and if it is, I hope it’s blown up, and I mean that.”

• Pamela Geller, whose blog is devoted to raising the alarm about radical Islam, said on CNN the other day that instead of the community center, a monument should be built to “victims of hundreds of millions of years of jihadi wars, land enslavements, cultural annihilations and mass slaughter.”

• Robert Spencer, who with Geller runs “Jihad Watch”, wrote on Human Events: “The Twin Towers, after all, were the symbol of America’s economic power. Placing a mosque by the site of their destruction (at the hands of Islamic jihadists) symbolizes the taming of that power.”

• Andrew McCarthy of the Weekly Standard noted on Fox, in opposition to the plan, that while there are 2,300 mosques in the United States, there are no churches or synagogues in Mecca or Medina.

Of course, these people are only trying to honor the victims of 9/11, and protect Americans from future attacks. Why would anyone think differently?

Thousands in Phoenix protest Arizona’s immigration law

LA Times

The demonstration, one of the largest since SB 1070 was signed into law in April, draws a diverse crowd. Backers of the law are to hold their own rally at a suburban stadium in the evening.

Reporting from Phoenix —

Under a broiling desert sun, thousands of protesters on Saturday morning slowly marched five miles to the state capitol here to rally against Arizona’s controversial new immigration law.

There was no official crowd estimate, but the march is one of the largest demonstrations since Gov. Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 into law on April 23. The law makes it a state crime to lack immigration papers and requires police to determine the status of people they stop and suspect are in the country illegally.

The law’s backers, who are to hold their own rally at a suburban stadium Saturday evening, say that the measure is necessary to protect against violence seeping across the border from Mexico. Critics including President Obama, whose Justice Department is expected to challenge the law in court, contend the measure invites racial profiling.

Several groups have sued to stop the law from going into effect, but if they do not prevail in court it will be implemented on July 29. It is widely popular in Arizona and has attracted majority support in several recent national polls.

Demonstrators for Saturday’s protest against SB 1070 came from as far as Rhode Island and Louisiana. They streamed down the broad boulevards in a several-blocks long procession of white shirts, American flags and umbrellas to protect against temperatures expected to reach the high 90s. Dennis DuVall, 68, drove down from the Arizona city of Prescott, 100 miles north.        Read More…

‘TOP KILL’ HAS FAILED

Huffington Post

Oil Still Gushing As BP Prepares New Operation, Expected To Take Four Days

ROBERT, La. — BP admitted defeat Saturday in its attempt to plug the Gulf of Mexico oil leak by pumping mud into a busted well, but said it’s preparing yet another method to fight the spill after a series of failures.

BP PLC Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said the company determined the “top kill” method had failed after after it spent three days pumping heavy drilling mud into the crippled well 5,000 feet underwater.

“This scares everybody, the fact that we can’t make this well stop flowing, the fact that we haven’t succeeded so far,” Suttles said. “Many of the things we’re trying have been done on the surface before, but have never been tried at 5,000 feet.”

It was the latest setback for the company casting about for ways to stop the crude from further fouling waters, wildlife and marshland. A 100-ton box placed over the leak failed after ice-like crystals clogged it, while a mile-long tube that sucked more than 900,000 gallons of oil from the gusher was removed to make way for the top kill.

Suttles said BP is already preparing for the next attempt to stop the leak. Under the plan, BP would use robot submarines to cut off the damaged riser from which the oil is leaking, and then try to cap it with a containment valve. Officials say the cutting and capping effort would take at least four days.

“We’re confident the job will work but obviously we can’t guarantee success,” Suttles said of the new plan.

The oil spill began after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in April, killing 11 people. It’s the worst spill in U.S. history – exceeding even the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989 off the Alaska coast – dumping between 18 million and 40 million gallons into the Gulf, according to government estimates.

Word that the top-kill had failed hit hard in the fishing community of Venice, La., near where oil first made landfall in large quanities almost two weeks ago.

“Everybody’s starting to realize this summer’s lost. And our whole lifestyle might be lost,” said Michael Ballay, the 59-year-old manager of the Cypress Cove Marina.
